Earthquake-resistant construction techniques in Italy between 1880 and 1910: alternatives to reinforced concrete

2017

The series of earthquakes that struck Italy between the late nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth century spurred a lively debate about earthquake-resistant buildings that, through the influence of foreign experience, resulted in specialised literature and competitions that gave rise to a series of interesting patents. Innovative construction solutions for seismic areas were largely developed after the earthquake that struck the cities of Messina and Reggio Calabria in 1908, alongside the parallel advances in reinforced concrete. New earthquake-resistant construction solutions were based on a reassessment of traditional construction methods that used bricks, timber or me…

Evaluating Resistance to Bt Toxin Cry1Ab by F2 Screen in European Populations of Ostrinia nubilalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)

2010

ABSTRACT The large-scale cultivation of transgenic crops producing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxins have already lead to the evolution of Bt resistance in some pest populations targeted by these crops. We used the F2 screening method for further estimating the frequency of resistance alleles of the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), to Bt maize, Zea mays L., producing the CrylAb toxin. In France, Germany, and Italy, 784, 455, and 80 lines of European corn borer were screened for resistance to Mon810 maize, respectively. In Slovakia, 26 lines were screened for resistance to the CrylAb toxin. The cost of F2 screen performed in the four countries varie…

Enriched rearing environment and wild genetic background can enhance survival and disease resistance of salmonid fishes during parasite epidemics

2015

Summary 1. The importance and volume of aquaculture is increasing world-wide. Rearing practices play a key role in determining growth rate, survival and disease resistance in aquaculture fishes. Recent evidence suggests that in comparison with a standard stimulus-poor rearing environment, an enriched or variable rearing environment has significant positive effects on several traits underlying growth and well-being of fish. However, the effect of enriched rearing on one of the most important threats for aquaculture development, occurrence of parasitic infections, remains unknown. 2. We used surveillance data of experimental salmonid populations of wild and hatchery origin under semi-natural …

2014

Objectives: Emerging evidence suggests that maternal obesity (MO) predisposes offspring to obesity and the recently described non-alcoholic fatty pancreas disease (NAFPD) but involved mechanisms remain unclear. Using a pathophysiologically relevant murine model, we here investigated a role for the biological clock--molecular core circadian genes (CCG) in the generation of NAFPD. Design: Female C57BL6 mice were fed an obesogenic diet (OD) or standard chow (SC) for 6 weeks, prior to pregnancy and throughout gestation and lactation: resulting offspring were subsequently weaned onto either OD (Ob_Ob and Con_Ob) or standard chow (Ob_Con and Con_Con) for 6 months. Biochemical, pro-inflammatory an…

Prevalence of genetically similarFlavobacterium columnarephages across aquaculture environments reveals a strong potential for pathogen control

2020

SummaryIntensive aquaculture conditions expose fish to bacterial infections, leading to significant financial losses, extensive antibiotic use and risk of antibiotic resistance in target bacteria.Flavobacterium columnarecauses columnaris disease in aquaculture worldwide. To develop a bacteriophage-based control of columnaris disease, we isolated and characterized 126F. columnarestrains and 63 phages againstF. columnarefrom Finland and Sweden. Bacterial isolates were virulent on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and fell into four previously described genetic groups A, C, E and G, with genetic groups C and E being the most virulent. Phage host range studied against a collection of 228 bact…

PPARβ activation restores the high glucose-induced impairment of insulin signalling in endothelial cells

2014

Background and Purpose PPARβ enhances insulin sensitivity in adipocytes and skeletal muscle cells, but its effects on insulin signalling in endothelial cells are not known. We analysed the effects of the PPARβ/δ (PPARβ) agonists, GW0742 and L165041, on impaired insulin signalling induced by high glucose in HUVECs and aortic and mesenteric arteries from diabetic rats. Experimental Approach Insulin-stimulated NO production, Akt-Ser 473 and eNOS-Ser 1177 phosphorylation, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production were studied in HUVECs incubated in low- or high-glucose medium. Insulin-stimulated relaxations and protein phosphorylation in vessels from streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rat…

Increased physical activity decreases hepatic free fatty acid uptake: a study in human monozygotic twins

2006

Exercise is considered to be beneficial for free fatty acid (FFA) metabolism, although reports of the effects of increased physical activity on FFA uptake and oxidation in different tissues in vivo in humans have been inconsistent. To investigate the heredity-independent effects of physical activity and fitness on FFA uptake in skeletal muscle, the myocardium, and liver we used positron emission tomography (PET) in nine healthy young male monozygotic twin pairs discordant for physical activity and fitness. The cotwins with higher physical activity constituting the more active group had a similar body mass index but less body fat and 18 +/- 10% higher (P < 0.001) compared to the less active …
