Characterisation of focal liver lesions undetermined at grey-scale US: contrast-enhanced US versus 64-row MDCT and MRI with liver-specific contrast a…

2010

The aim of this study was to assess the role of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in the characterisation of focal liver lesions in comparison with multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with liver-specific contrast agent. One hundred and eighty-seven focal liver lesions, 91 malignant and 96 benign (mean size 3.2 cm) - proved by biopsy (n=12), histology (n=4), MDCT (n=108), MRI (n=44) MDCT/MRI (n=19) - in 159 patients were studied by CEUS. Two expert radiologists consensually evaluated the contrast-enhancement patterns at CEUS. For each lesion, they assessed: (a) nature (benign, malignant, not assessable), (b) specific diagnosis and (c) need for …

Gray matter alteration in dyslexia: converging evidence from volumetric and voxel-by-voxel MRI analyses.

2004

Affecting up to 4-10% of the population, dyslexia is a highly prevalent, childhood onset developmental disorder adversely influencing multiple domains of adaptive functioning throughout the lifespan. The present brain imaging study was conducted in order to investigate the neuroanatomical correlates of developmental dyslexia. The MRI brain scans of 10 males with dyslexia and 14 matched controls were analyzed with (1) a classical volumetric method measuring gray and white matter lobar volumes and (2) a voxel-by-voxel method. The voxel-by-voxel method identifies changes in tissue density and localizes morphologic alterations without limiting the analyses to predefined regions. Subsequent corr…

The Long-Term Effects of Physical Loading and Exercise Lifestyles on Back-Related Symptoms, Disability, and Spinal Pathology Among Men

1995

Study design Historical cohort, including selected subgroups. Objectives To understand the long-term effects of exercise on back-related outcomes, back pain, sciatica, back-related hospitalizations, pensions, and magnetic resonance imaging findings were studied among former elite athletes. Summary of background data Exercise and sports participation have become increasingly popular, as have recommendations of exercises for back problems, but little is known about their long-term effects. Methods Questionnaires were returned by 937 former elite athletes and 620 control subjects (83% response rate). Identification codes allowed record linkage to hospital discharge and pension registers. Magne…

Texture analysis in susceptibility-weighted imaging may be useful to differentiate acute from chronic multiple sclerosis lesions.

2020

To evaluate the diagnostic performance of texture analysis (TA) applied on non-contrast-enhanced susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) to differentiate acute (enhancing) from chronic (non-enhancing) multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions. We analyzed 175 lesions from 58 patients with relapsing-remitting MS imaged on a 3.0 T MRI scanner and applied TA on T2-w and SWI images to extract texture features. We evaluated the presence or absence of lesion enhancement on T1-w post-contrast images and performed a computational statistical analysis to assess if there was any significant correlation between the texture features and the presence of lesion activity. ROC curves and leave-one-out cross-validation…

Relevance of dynamic studies with magnetic resonance enterography in Crohn's disease.

2020

A proper quantification of the inflammatory activity in Crohn's disease (CD) lesions is needed to establish the appropriate management for each patient. The aim of this study is to evaluate the inflammatory activity of affected segments in small bowel lesions using dynamic studies of magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) in patients undergoing surgery, and their correlation with the level of inflammation and histological fibrosis of the surgical piece.A prospective, consecutive, observational, clinical study was conducted that included all the patients with small bowel CD that underwent surgery in this center between March 2011 and September 2013. Diagnosis was established according to Lenn…

MRI findings in lingual venous malformations.

2003

To describe the plain and enhanced MRI findings of lingual venous malformations and to discuss the importance of contrast medium in the differential diagnosis of high intensity lesions of the tongue on T(2) weighted images. The clinical records and MR images of eight patients affected by a lingual venous malformation were retrospectively reviewed. Patients presented with a palpable submucosal bluish-red soft mass in the tongue. MRI examinations were performed on a 0.5 T superconducting unit. Plain and enhanced SE (spin echo) T(1) weighted and FSE (fast spin echo) T(2) weighted images were acquired in axial, sagittal and coronal planes. Axial SPGR (spoiled gradient recalled echo) T(1) weighte…

Clinical activity after fingolimod cessation: Disease reactivation or rebound?

2018

Background and purpose There is debate as to whether the apparent rebound after fingolimod discontinuation is related to the discontinuation itself or whether it is due to the natural course of highly active multiple sclerosis (MS). Our aim was to survey the prevalence of severe reactivation and rebound after discontinuation of fingolimod in a cohort of Italian patients with MS. Methods Patients with relapsing-remitting MS who were treated with fingolimod for at least 6 months and who stopped treatment for reasons that were unrelated to inefficacy were included in the analysis. Results A total of 100 patients who had discontinued fingolimod were included in the study. Fourteen patients (14%…

Usefulness of abdominal ultrasonography in the analysis of endoscopic activity in patients with Crohn's disease: changes following treatment with imm…

2013

The objective of this study was to analyze the accuracy of abdominal ultrasonography (AUS) in the assessment of mucosal healing in patients with Crohn's disease (CD) receiving immunomodulators and/or biological treatment, with ileocolonoscopy as the reference standard.Thirty patients were included in a prospective longitudinal study. All patients underwent ileocolonoscopy and AUS before and after a minimum of one year of treatment. The Crohn's Disease Endoscopic Inflammatory Index of Severity (CDEIS) was used for endoscopic assessment whereas AUS was analyzed by means of bowel wall thickness, color Doppler grade and percentage of increase of parietal enhancement after contrast injection. In …

Endoscopic aqueductoplasty through a tailored craniocervical approach.

2005

Object. Neuroendoscopy has an essential role in the management of occlusive hydrocephalus due to a membranous obstruction of the sylvian aqueduct. Well-known endoscopic methods include endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) and endoscopic aqueductoplasty through a frontal burr hole. Building on their experience in the endoscopic management of hydrocephalus, the authors realized that not all of their patients with aqueductal obstruction were eligible for the aforementioned lines of treatment. Certain anatomical situations made it impossible to perform ETV or endoscopic aqueductoplasty through a frontal burr hole. Long-term complications of the shunt system led the authors to seek an alternat…

Otoneurological management of petrous apex cholesterol granuloma

2009

Objective: The aim of the study is to review the management of petrous apex cholesterol granuloma. The surgical approaches for drainage or total removal and the wait and see policy were analyzed, and outcomes were evaluated. Methods: Retrospective charts of 27 patients managed for petrous apex cholesterol granuloma with a minimum follow-up of 12 months were analyzed in a quartenary skull base center. Presenting symptoms and signs were recorded, and radiologic imaging was evaluated. Management options included wait and see policy and surgery by several approaches. Results: The mean age of patients affected by the lesion was 38.8 years. The mean follow-up was 56.7 months. Patients complained …
