The BRICS Centres of Dispute Resolution: causes, state of the art, and prospects

2023

The idea of an enhanced cooperation and exchange of knowledge and best practices among its member states in the fields of trade, commerce, and investments -among others- is at the heart of BRICS. In fact, intra-BRICS trade has nearly tripled over the last decade, supported by an increase in intra-regional trade for all member countries. Thanks to their influential and remarkable progress in promoting local currency (for de-dollarisation purposes), regional FDI, and regional trade, the BRICS economies have emerged and have taken a new space in the twenty-first century. This reinforced one of the core objectives pursued by BRICS which is that of enhancing the five developing economies’ role i…

The Relationship Between Goal Orientation, Social Comparison Responses, Self-Efficacy, and Performance

2008

The present study examined whether social comparison responses (identification and contrast in social comparison) mediated the relationship between goal orientation (promotion and prevention) and self-efficacy, and whether self-efficacy was subsequently related with a better performance. As expected, the results showed that promotion-oriented individuals – who are focused on achieving success – had higher self-efficacy than prevention-oriented individuals – who are focused on avoiding failure. Only one of the social comparison responses had a mediating role. That is, the tendency to contrast oneself with others who were doing better mediated the relationship between a prevention goal orien…

A mathematical approach to model diffusion properties of sedimentary rocks relevant to Sicily cultural heritage

2007

Cultural heritage vestiges represent complex physical systems, able to interact with the environment through continuous exchanges of heat and fluids (water, air). In this wide context, particular relevance is assumed by transport phenomena and diffusion of pollutant, vehiculated inside the considered structure by water itself. Interaction mechanisms can be considered at various observation scales, depending on the material provenance and on its geometry and location. Involved materials are commonly constituted by porous rocks - more or less altered - belonging to geological sedimentary formations, as limestone, calcarenite and travertine. Their appreciable porosity affects significantly liq…

Giant hepatocellular adenoma as cause of severe abdominal pain: a case report

2007

Abstract The authors describe the case of a large hepatocellular adenoma diagnosed in a 30-year old woman who came to us complaining of acute pain in the upper abdominal quadrants. The patient had been taking an oral contraceptive pill for the last ten years. We present the clinical features, the diagnostic work-up and the treatment prescribed.

Synthesis and Physical Stability of Novel Au-Ag@SiO2 Alloy Nanoparticles

2012

The present study describes the synthesis of nanoparticles of silver-gold alloys and with their electrokinetic and spectroscopic characterisation. The synthesis was made in two steps. In the first step silver nanoparticles coated with silica (Ag@SiO2) were synthesised using a novel method assisted by laser ablation. The second step consisted on the introduction of KAuCl4 in the colloidal solution of Ag@ SiO2 nanoparticles in order to obtain silica-coated silver-gold alloy nanoparticles. The changes of colour and mean diameter of Ag@SiO2 nanoparticles caused by the introduction of the gold salt were found dependent on its concentration. Upon increasing (KAuCl4) the diameter of nanoparticles …

Lanthanide–saccharide chemistry: synthesis and characterisation of Ce(III)–saccharide complexes

2000

A series of nine Ce(III) complexes has been synthesised with seven different monosaccharides (D-glucose, D-fructose, D-galactose, D-mannose, L-sorbose, D-ribose and D-xylose) and two different disaccharides (D-maltose and L-lactose), and these have been characterised with various analytical, spectral, magnetic and electrochemical techniques. The NMR studies have highlighted some interesting features about the metal-ion-binding pattern of the saccharides. Some additional coordination has been proposed along with the chelating groups in the saccharide molecules, based on the shifts in 13C NMR spectra. On the other hand, solution absorption studies and solid-state magnetic susceptibilities hav…

A five-coordinate manganese(iii) complex of a salen type ligand with a positive axial anisotropy parameter D.

2017

A new high-spin d4 roughly trigonal–bipyramidal (TBP) manganese(III) complex with a salen type ligand (H2L), namely MnL(NCS)·0.4H2O, has been synthesised and characterised by elemental analysis, ESI mass spectrometry, IR and UV-vis spectroscopy, and spectroelectrochemistry. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed an axial compression of the approximate TBP. Temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility and variable-temperature variable-field (VTVH) magnetisation measurements, as well as high-frequency and -field EPR (HFEPR) spectroscopy, were used to accurately describe the magnetic properties of this complex and, in particular, determine the spin Hamiltonian parameters: g-values and the zero-f…

Vibrational analysis of Ni(II)- and Cu(II)-octamethylchlorin by polarized resonance Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy

2001

We measured the polarized resonance Raman spectra of Cu(II)-2,2,7,8,12,13,17,18-octamethylchlorin in CS2 at various excitation wavenumbers in a spectral region covering the Qy, Qx and Bx optical absorption bands. Additionally, we measured the FTIR-Raman spectrum of the highly overcrowded spectral region between 1300 and 1450 cm−1. The spectral decomposition was carried out by a self-consistent global fit to all spectra obtained. The thus identified Raman and IR lines were assigned by comparison with the resonance Raman spectra of Cu(II)-octaethylporphyrin, by utilizing their depolarization ratio dispersions and by a normal mode analysis. The latter was based on a modified transferable molec…
