On-line measurements of RuO$_4$ during a PWR severe accident

International audience; After the Fukushima accident, it became essential to have a way to monitor in real time the evolution of a nuclear reactor during a severe accident, in order to react efficiently and minimize the industrial, ecological and health consequences of the accident. Among gaseous fission products, the tetroxide of ruthenium RuO$_4$ is of prime importance since it has a significant radiological impact. Ruthenium is a low volatile fission product but in case of the rupture of the lower head by the molten corium, the air entering into the vessel oxidizes Ru into gaseous RuO$_4$, which is not trapped by the Filtered Containment Venting Systems. A general method for the estimation of the confidence interval of molecular absorption coefficients is presented. It combines statistical numerical experiments with analytical calculations. The method uses line parameter predictions (position and intensity) with known estimated uncertainties. The propagation of errors from line parameters to absorption coefficients or cross-sections are analyzed in detail as a function of the resolution. This work is especially intended to provide expert information for applications requiring theoretical predictions for which the present state of the art of line by line high-resolution modeling is not accurate enough to meet the experimental precision. International audience; This paper deals with the principles of detection of optical signals near a surface in a manner permitting the mapping of the distribution of the fields close to various kinds of illuminated samples. We begin with a discussion of the main physical properties of the optical fields near a surface in the absence of any probe tip. Spatio-Temporal Beam Mapping for Studying Nonlinear Dynamics in Graded Index Multimode Fiber

We experimentally demonstrate high-resolution mapping of the spatio-temporal dynamics of the beam cleaning process in graded index multimode fibers. This high-resolution characterization reveals the time-dependent nature of the beam self-cleaning process.

Negatively Curved Nanographene with Heptagonal and [5]Helicene Units

Negatively curved nanographene (NG) 4, having two heptagons and a [5]helicene, was unexpectedly obtained by aryl rearrangement and stepwise cyclodehydrogenations. X-ray crystallography confirmed the saddle-shaped structures of intermediate 3 and NG 4. The favorability of rearrangement over helicene formation following radical cation or arenium cation mechanisms is supported by theoretical calculations. NG 4 demonstrates a reversible mechanochromic color change and solid-state emission, presumably benefiting from its loose crystal packing. Système de prise d'images haute résolution pour l'analyse de projection de particules : application à l'épandage centrifuge d'engrais

This paper describes the design of a high resolution low cost imaging system for the analysis of high speed particle projection. This system, based on a camera and a set of flashes, is used to characterize the centrifugal spreading of fertilizer particles ejected at speeds of environ 30 m s. Multiexposure images collected with the camera installed perpendicular to the output flow of granules are analysed to estimate the trajectories of the fertilizer granules. Very good results are obtained with the Markov random fields method, in comparison with others.

Mapping intra-plot topsoil diversity of Burgundy vineyards (Aloxe- Corton, France) from very high spatial resolution (VHSR) images

International audience; In this work, we present a method based on very high spatial resolution (VHSR) aerial images acquired in the visible domain and that map soil surface diversity at the hillslope scale with a spatial resolution of a few centimeters. This method combines aerial VHSR image classification with local soil sampling. Principal component analysis (PCA) and non-supervised classification was performed on image characteristics to define soil surface characteristic classes (SSC). Then soil surface mapping was combined with soil surface descriptions and soil profiles to define soil types by physical and chemical characteristics.

International audience; Evapotranspiration (ET) is a key process in land surface–atmosphere studies. It mainly depends on water availability and incoming solar radiation and then reflects the interactions between surface water processes and climate. In this paper, a methodology for retrieving ET from low spatial resolution remote sensing data is presented.
