Management of acute pulmonary embolism: towards a (truly) global reach
2021
The study by Z. Zhai and colleagues provides an overview of the developments observed as risk-adapted management strategies for acute pulmonary embolism have been progressively introduced and optimised in the Chinese healthcare systemhttps://bit.ly/3swGht2
Metabolic aspects of obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome.
2009
Insulin resistance is often associated with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) and could contribute to cardiovascular risk in OSAS. Sleep loss and intermittent hypoxia could contribute to the pathogenesis of the metabolic alterations associated with obesity, a common feature of OSAS. The biology of the adipocyte is being increasingly studied, and it has been found that hypoxia negatively affects adipocyte function. In November 2007, the European Respiratory Society and two EU COST Actions (Cardiovascular risk in OSAS (B26) and Adipose tissue and the metabolic syndrome (BM0602)), held a Research Seminar in Du¨sseldorf, Germany, to discuss the following: 1) the effects of hypoxia on glu…

Autogenous Reconstruction of Infected Arterial Prosthetic Grafts Utilizing the Superficial Femoral Vein1
2001
BACKGROUND Prosthetic infection after reconstructive vascular surgery is a most serious complication, associated with high mortality and amputation rates. Following excision of the infected graft, several methods of reconstruction are available. We present here our experience with autogenous reconstruction of infected prosthetic arterial grafts using the superficial femoral vein (SFV). METHODS From November 1995 to December 1999, we used the SFV in seven patients (mean age 70 years) for reconstruction of an infected aortobifemoral (n = 2), aortoiliac (n = 1), femorofemoral bypass (n = 1), femorotibial (n = 2) and carotid crossover bypass (n = 1). Treatment encompassed complete prosthetic ex…

Klappenerhaltende Resektion eines Fibroelastoms
2002
1995
The study of morbidity in asthma requires consideration not only of standard physiopathologic and function parameters, but also of the impact the disease has on the patient's life-style as he or she perceives it and evaluates it. The quantification of this factor, known as health-related quality of life (HRQL), is achieved by administering questionnaires specially designed for the purpose. We analyzed the reliability, content validity and construct validity (convergence and divergence) of one instrument, the Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (AQLQ) designed by Marks and colleagues. This questionnaire covers 4 dimensions (breathlessness, mood, social limitation and worrying) and gives a t…
Measurement of exhaled nitric oxide: Comparison of different analysers
2010
Background and objective: Exhaled nitric oxide (NO) is used as a surrogate marker to monitor eosinophilic airway inflammation, assist in diagnosis, and support treatment decisions for asthma patients. The aim of this study was to compare five NO analysers: Medisoft (M), Aerocrine Niox (N), Aerocrine Niox flex (NF), Aerocrino Niox mino (NM) and EcoMedics (E). Methods: In 85 subjects (25 asthma patients, 25 COPD patients, 35 healthy volunteers; median age 36.5 years, range 23–79, 47% female), three NO measurements per individual were performed, using each analyser according to the American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society guidelines. Subjects evaluated the devices on the basis …

Congenital pulmonary airway malformation in adult: report of two rare cases and literature review
2019
Congenital pulmonary airway malformations (CPAMs) are a heterogeneous group of congenital, non-hereditary lesions of the lung, cystic and non-cystic type with clear developmental anomalies and evident malformative changes, which derive from the excessive proliferation of the tubular bronchial structures. We described two rare cases of type IV CPAM detected in adult patients with different clinical presentation: one of these cases was symptomatic, complaining of cough and hemoptysis. Conversely, the other case was reported as incidental findings in patient with abdominal pain without respiratory symptoms. Chest computed tomography (CT) scan was performed showing voluminous cystic formations …
