Effect of nebulized beclomethasone on airway inflammation and clinical status of children with allergic asthma and rhinitis: a randomized, double-bli…

2012

We aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effect of nebulized beclomethasone dipropionate (nBDP) on both allergic asthma and rhinitis. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 40 children (mean age 10.7 ± 2.1 years) with allergic asthma and rhinitis received either nBDP (daily dose of 800 µg, administered twice daily) or placebo for 4 weeks (with a face mask), after a 2-week run-in period of clinical assessment. Nasal and oral fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) measurements together with pulmonary function tests, nasal and oral exhaled breath condensate (EBC) collection for pH and interleukin-5 (IL-5) measurements as well as nasal and bronchial symptom scores were obtained at…

Perceived exercise limitation in asthma: The role of disease severity, overweight, and physical activity in children

2016

Children with asthma may be less physically active than their healthy peers. We aimed to investigate whether perceived exercise limitation (EL) was associated with lung function or bronchial hyper-responsiveness (BHR), socioeconomic factors, prenatal smoking, overweight, allergic disease, asthma severity, or physical activity (PA).The 302 children with asthma from the 10-year examination of the Environment and Childhood Asthma birth cohort study underwent a clinical examination including perceived EL (structured interview of child and parent(s)), measure of overweight (body mass index by sex and age passing through 25 kg/mIn the final model explaining 30.1%, asthma severity score (OR: 1.49,…

Endurance training in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a comparison of high versus moderate intensity.

2000

Abstract Gimenez M, Servera E, Vergara P, Bach JR, Polu J-M. Endurance training in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a comparison of high versus moderate intensity. Arch Phys Med Rehabil 2000;81:102-9. Purpose: To create a maximum tolerated 45-minute aerobic training program for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and to compare its outcomes with those of commonly prescribed moderate exercise. Design: Prospective, randomized trial. Setting: A work physiology laboratory. Patients and Methods: The maximum exercise intensities that 7 COPD patients could sustain for 45 minutes were determined on a bilevel exercise ergometer. The patients then exercised …

Functional Evaluation of Emphysema Using Diffusion-Weighted 3Helium-Magnetic Resonance Imaging, High-Resolution Computed Tomography, and Lung Functio…

2004

Purpose: To assess the emphysematous enlargement of distal air-spaces and concomitant large and small airway disease using diffusion-weighted 3 Helium-magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT), and lung function tests (LFT). Methods: Seven patients were examined after single lung transplantation (LTx) and 1 before double LTx for various forms of emphysema. Five patients after double LTx served as controls. Patients were assessed by 3 Helium-MRI (apparent diffusion coefficient [ADC]), HRCT (mean lung density [MLD], emphysema index [El]), and LFT. Results: Transplanted lungs: mean ADC = 0.17 cm 2 /s, MLD = -848 H, El = 22%. Emphysematous lungs: mean ADC = 0.…

New insights in respiratory impedance in young children after repair of congenital diaphragmatic hernia: a cross-sectional study

2019

Abstract Lung function impairment is common in Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) survivors. The aim of this study was to evaluate, in children who underwent CDH surgical repair, mid and long-term consequences on respiratory impedance, investigating the impact of CDH on both resistance and reactance parameters, as well as bronchodilator response. Forced Oscillation Technique (FOT) parameters were collected from 12 patients (2–11 years). Resistance and reactance values at 8 Hz (Rrs8, Xrs8) and the area under the reactance curve (AX) were measured pre and post-salbutamol. Quantitative variables were compared using Mann-Whitney U test. Differences of categorical variables were evaluated usi…

Noninvasive respiratory muscle aids during PEG placement in ALS patients with severe ventilatory impairment.

2010

Abstract Although no clear recommendations are given about when percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) should be placed in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients, some experts underline the risk of respiratory complications when patients had severe ventilatory muscle impairment (SVMI). Aim To evaluate the efficacy of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) and mechanically assisted cough (MAC) to avoid respiratory complications related to PEG placement in ALS patients with SVMI. Material and methods Prospective study including ALS patients who had chosen to have PEG placement timed by swallowing dysfunction with the aid of NIV and MAC if needed. PEG was carried out under volume-cycled NIV th…

Cohort Differences in Maximal Physical Performance: A Comparison of 75- and 80-Year-Old Men and Women Born 28 Years Apart

2020

Abstract Background Whether increased life expectancy is accompanied by increased functional capacity in older people at specific ages is unclear. We compared similar validated measures of maximal physical performance in 2 population-based older cohorts born and assessed 28 years apart. Method Participants in the first cohort were born in 1910 and 1914 and were assessed at age 75 and 80 years, respectively (N = 500, participation rate 77%). Participants in the second cohort were born in 1938 or 1939 and 1942 or 1943 and were assessed at age 75 and 80 years, respectively (N = 726, participation rate 40%). Participants were recruited using a population register and all community-dwelling pers…

Genome-wide association study identifies five loci associated with lung function

2009

Pulmonary function measures are heritable traits that predict morbidity and mortality and define chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We tested genome-wide association with forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV(1)) and the ratio of FEV(1) to forced vital capacity (FVC) in the SpiroMeta consortium (n = 20,288 individuals of European ancestry). We conducted a meta-analysis of top signals with data from direct genotyping (n < or = 32,184 additional individuals) and in silico summary association data from the CHARGE Consortium (n = 21,209) and the Health 2000 survey (n < or = 883). We confirmed the reported locus at 4q31 and identified associations with FEV(1) or FEV(1)/FVC and co…
