Purpose To asses visual quality after bilateral implantation of the Acri.LISA 366D intraocular lens (IOL) (Carl Zeiss Meditec) in patients with high and low–moderate myopia. The vitamins and related compounds cited in the title were investigated for their abilities to modulate sister-chromatid exchanges (SCEs) induced by Trp-P-2 or cyclophosphamide (CP) in human peripheral lymphocyte cultures in the presence of an exogenous metabolizing system from rat liver. When inducer and test substances were given simultaneously, beta-carotene, retinal and alpha-tocopherol caused a dose-dependent decrease of SCE frequencies induced by Trp-P-2 and CP. A newborn male with mitochondrial complex I deficiency suffered from neonatal epileptic seizures, which later developed into infantile spasms. The infant was blind due to aplasia of the retinal vessels and hypoplasia of the optic nerve. There was congenital lactic acidosis, which persisted in later life. The boy was microcephalic and retarded. Muscular hypotonia later shifted to spasticity. Succinic acid was increased in urine. We assume that the aplasia of the retinal vessels is due to damage of the retinal ganglion cells caused by the mitochondrial disease in the first 3 to 4 months of pregnancy.

Centrins are calmodulin-like Ca2+-binding proteins that can be found in all ciliated eukaryotic cells from yeast to mammals. Expressed in male germ cells and photoreceptors, centrin 1 (CETN1) resides in the photoreceptor transition zone and connecting cilium. To identify its function in mammals, we deleted Cetn1 by homologous recombination. Cetn1−/− mice were viable and showed no sign of retina degeneration suggesting that CETN1 is nonessential for photoreceptor ciliogenesis or structural maintenance. Phototransduction components localized normally to the Cetn1−/− photoreceptor outer segments, and loss of CETN1 had no effect on light-induced translocation of transducin to the inner segment.…

The influence of seasonal lighting conditions on expression of clock genes and the circadian pacemaker was investigated in the rat retina. For this purpose, the 24-h profiles of nine clock genes (bmal1, clock, per1, per2, per3, dec1, dec2, cry1 and cry 2) and the arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase gene as an indicator of the circadian pacemaker output were compared between light-dark periods of 8 : 16 and 16 : 8 h. The photoperiod influenced the daily patterns of the amount of transcript for per1, per3, dec2 and arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase.
