Optociliary veins and central retinal vein occlusion.

In a follow up of 94 patients with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) whose onset had taken place less than 1 year earlier, optociliary veins (OCVs) were found in 7.4% at first examination. Among the 79 eyes in which the fundus of the eye was very visible after a follow up of more than 1 year OCVs were found in 30.4%, showing a late development of OCVs in many cases of CRVO. No difference was found in the occurrence of OCVs between non-ischaemic and ischaemic forms of CRVO. The visual acuity of the eyes with CRVO that developed OCVs was not significantly different from the visual acuity of the eyes without OCVs. Local safety of repeated intravitreal Ozurdex

Sir, The article entitled ‘Twelve-month experience with Ozurdex for the treatment of macular edema associated with retinal vein occlusion'1 highlights the significant cataract progression in eyes receiving more than one Ozurdex implant. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of all patients with macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion (RVO) refractory to current therapies and treated with Ozurdex from April 2010 until March 2012. Serous Detachment of the Retina: A Complication of Branch Retinal Vein Stenosis

The author reports a case of serous detachment of the retina, which has developed in an eye with veno-venous collaterals, secondary to stenosis of a branch of the central retinal vein near the optic disc. This complication has not previously been described in this retinal vascular obstructive disease.

Patients and methods In a clinical trial 27 eyes with central retinal vein occlusion (22 eyes with clinical ischaemia, 5 eyes with continuous disc oedema and visual acuity below 4/10) underwent surgical decompression by vitrectomy and radial optic neurotomy. BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to report on arteriovenous sheathotomy in branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) with a long-term follow-up and examine the visual field effects of this surgical approach. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a clinical trial 36 eyes with branch retinal vein occlusion (22 eyes with ischaemia, 14 eyes with chronic macular oedema) underwent surgical decompression accompanied by peeling of the membrana limitans interna after prior isovolemic haemodilution for 3 months had been unsuccessfull. Retinal vein occlusion: current treatment.

Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a pathology noted for more than 150 years. Although a lot has been written on the matter, it is still a frequent condition with multifactorial etiopathogenesis with many unclear aspects. The RVO pathogenesis has varied systemic and local implications that make it difficult to elaborate treatment guidelines. The management of the patient with RVO is very complex and a multidisciplinary approach is required in order to identify and correct the associated risk factors. Safety and Efficacy of Ranibizumab in Macular Edema following Retinal Vein Occlusion.

Macular edema is the leading cause of visual impairment in patients with retinal vein occlusion. Limited improvements may be obtained with laser photocoagulation or intravitreal triamcinolone. However, according to the data provided by randomized clinical trials, intravitreal injections of ranibizumab (Lucentis; Genentech, South San Francisco, CA) constitute a new effective and safe option for the management of these vision-threatening diseases. The aim of the present review is to summarize the clinical evidence of ranibizumab for macular edema due to retinal vein occlusions.
