Optical coherence tomography-based retinal vessel analysis for the evaluation of hypertensive vasculopathy

2013

Purpose Evaluation of retinal vessels in cardiovascular disease traditionally relies upon funduscopy, but more recently digital photo analysis has expanded the spectrum. As spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) allows an in-vivo assessment of retinal tissue and its vessels on a histological scale, our study aimed at using this tool for the analysis of the retinal vasculature. Methods Circumferential peripapillary OCT scans (3DOCT-2000; Topcon Inc., Tokyo, Japan), with centration on the optic nerve head, were taken from 20 eyes (20 participants) with normal blood pressure and 20 eyes (20 participants) with arterial hypertension above 120 mmHg (mean blood pressure). The diameter …

Macular edema computer-aided evaluation in ocular vein occlusions.

1998

This paper is concerned with the use of digital fundus imaging to detect, quantify, and follow up macular angiographic leakage due to retinal vein occlusions. Images were matched automatically. We detected those pixels with a high increment in gray level within the closest area to the foveal center. Binary images displaying leakage were obtained. The procedure was checked against two observers' agreement. Twenty-one angiographic studies were collected. Two images of each sequence were selected for digitalization. Numerical descriptors of the leakage were proposed and quantification plots were designed for each pair of images. Interobserver concordance ranged between 82 and 98% when manually…

Color Doppler ultrasonography of the eye and orbit

1993

Color Doppler imaging is the recent development in ultrasonography that allows simultaneous two-dimensional structural imaging in Doppler evaluation of blood flow. With this technique, it is possible for the first time to indirectly display the fine orbital vessels such as the ophthalmic artery and its branches, the central retinal artery, the posterior ciliary artery, and the lacrimal artery. Also, the display of venous structures such as the superior ophthalmic vein, the vortex vein, and the central retinal vein is possible. In addition to the qualitative display of those vessels, the hemodynamics in those vessels can be quantitatively assessed by looking at the Doppler spectrum and deter…

Intravitreal Aflibercept Injection for Macular Edema Resulting from Central Retinal Vein Occlusion

2014

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intravitreal aflibercept injections for treatment of macular edema secondary to central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). DESIGN: A randomized, multicenter, double-masked phase 3 study. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 177 treatment-naive patients with macular edema secondary to CRVO were randomized in a 3:2 ratio. METHODS: Patients received either 2-mg intravitreal aflibercept or sham injections every 4 weeks for 20 weeks. From week 24 to 48, the aflibercept group received aflibercept as needed (pro re nata [PRN]), and the sham group continued receiving sham injections. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary efficacy end point was the proportion of patients…

The Spectrum of Ocular Manifestations in Patients with Waldenström's Macroglobulinemia.

2021

Purpose: To investigate the ocular manifestations in 91 Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia (WM) patients. Methods: Retrospective, cross-sectional, observational analysis. Results: Ocular impairments, detected in 19 patients, included flame-shaped hemorrhages, venous sausaging, papilledema, macular detachments, or central retinal vein occlusion in 16 patients; paraproteinemic keratopathy in 2; and a CANOMAD syndrome in 1. Best-corrected visual acuity was ≥0.5 logMAR units in 11 of 38 eyes. Intraocular pressure was increased in seven eyes. Genetic analysis in seven patients showed a mutation in the MYD88 gene in six patients and a nonsense mutation in the CXCR4 gene in five patients. Plasmapheresi…

Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion Followed by Central Retinal Artery Occlusion in Churg-Strauss Syndrome: Unusual Ocular Manifestations in Allergic Granu…

2009

Purpose To describe a rare branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) followed by central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) in a patient with Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS). Methods A 55-year-old man with a not yet diagnosed CSS developed a BRVO in the left eye and 1 year later a CRAO with painless and acute vision loss in the same eye. Medical history included bronchial asthma, history of allergy, eosinophilic pneumonia, bilateral pleuric and pericardial effusion, hypereosinophilia, and purpuric vasculitis. Results CRAO in the left eye was diagnosed by retinal whitening and a cherry red spot with coexisting old BRVO evidenced by previous laser photocoagulation. Corticosteroids and cyclophosphamide t…

Retrobulbar anesthesia complicated by combined central retinal vein and artery occlusion and massive vitreoretinal fibrosis.

1995

Retrobulbar anaesthesia is routine procedure in ocular surgery. Complication are infrequent but often severe, involving both retina and the optic nerve. we report a case of combined central retinal vein and artery occlusion, secondary to retrobulbar anaesthesia, which evolved into retinal ischemia and Vitreoretinal fibrosis. This is the first time to our knowledge that such a dramatic evolution of post traumatic retinal occlusion has been reported.

Assessment of intravitreal anti-VEGF drugs and dexamethasone for retinal diseases in real world setting: A multi-centre prospective study from Southe…

2022

Describe drug utilisation and clinical outcomes of intravitreal anti-VEGF drug and dexamethasone use in the real-world setting in Southern Italy using data from multi-centre study of retinal disease. Clinical data of retinal disease patients treated with anti-VEGF drugs and dexamethasone implant in 6 out-patient ophthalmology centres from Southern Italy were collected by means of an electronic case report form. Patients receiving at least one intravitreal injection/implant of the study drugs were followed for up to two years and described in terms of demographics and clinical characteristics. Drug utilisation patterns were described. A sign-rank test was used to compare clinical data on vi…
