Il libro propone un'interpretazione della "Rhetorica" di Aristotele come un'opera interessante non solo per gli studiosi di comunicazione ma anche per la riflessione antropologica. Ciò che rende ancora feconda la "Rhetorica" è il fatto che essa ci consegna una visione originale dell'animale umano a partire da un aspetto apparentemente marginale: la sua capacità, sempre esposta al fallimento, di parlare per persuadere, se stesso innanzitutto, e gli altri. Attraverso l'indagine su "ciò che può risultare persuasivo" (è questo, in sintesi, l'argomento della "Rhetorica") Aristotele mette a fuoco questioni ancora cruciali nel dibattito sulla natura umana.

Starting from some suggestions from Living Thought. The Origins and Actuality of Italian Philosophy (R. Esposito, 2010), this paper sustains that rhetoric can be a fruitful way of doing philosophy of language. According to Esposito, one of the main characteristics of the so called italian thought is the focus on the necessary connection between language and extra-linguistic world. In this article I argue that rhetoric, thanks to its extra-linguistic aim (persuasion), pays particular attention to this connection. The aim of this article is to look at talking cure as a typically rhetorical action. We refer in particular to the word’s ability to relieve pain or even heal, a capacity already recognized in Greek thought, where the comparison of word and pharmakon was widespread. We intend to use the case of the healing word as an emblematic example of the continuity between natural dimension and institutional-cultural dimension. We believe that an investigation aiming to bring these aspects together can find a fruitful reference point in ancient Greek culture. L'uso dell'espressione “Les rhétoriques de la concorde”, è la conseguenza di una scelta ben precisa: attribuire una funzione politica al genere epidittico. A questa scelta si possono opporre delle critiche legittime, tenuto conto che le fonti antiche presentano i discorsi epidittici come discorsi di circostanza che ruotano attorno alle nozioni di elogio e di biasimo. L’idea di una funzione politica del genere epidittico si fonda su un’interpretazione inizialmente proposta da Perelman e Olbrechts-Tyteca. This issue collects a part of the papers presented at the conference titled “Building Consensus. Rhetoric between Democracy and Conflict” held in Palermo in April 2015. The aim was to encourage an interdisciplinary investigation of the role of rhetoric and discursive processes in the realization of democracy and its eventual degenerations.
