Tangential Venous Resections during Robotic-Assisted Pancreaticoduodenectomy: the Results of a Case Series (with Video)

2020

Introduction: Despite the potential advantages in terms of microdissection and microsuturing capabilites, the robotic approach for borderline resectable pancreatic cancer is scarcely reported. Methods: We report our technique for a robotic-assisted pancreaticoduodenectomy with tangential Portal/ Superior Mesenteric Vein resection/reconstruction (RPD PV/SMV).We also compared the surgical outcomes of eight consecutive patients undergoing RPD PV/SMV with that of sixty patients who underwent robotic-assisted pancreaticoduodenectomy (RPD) in the same period of time. Results: A total of eight consecutive patients underwent RPD PV/SMV. We observed an increased estimated blood loss (550 vs 280 mL, …

Laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy in the treatment of vaginal vault prolapse: 8 years experience

2009

Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term results of a laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy for the treatment of vaginal vault prolapse. Study design Between January 1999 and January 2007, 165 laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy procedures, using a polypropylene mesh, were performed on women affected by vaginal vault prolapse. Intraoperative complications included: 5 bladder injuries and 3 sigmoid perforations. Postoperative complications included: 10 cases of fever, 5 cases of lumbosciatica, 15 cases of detrusor overactivity, 2 cases of vaginal haematoma, and 5 cases of minimal dispareunia. At 1, 6 and 12 months after surgery, a clinical evaluation was carried out for all patie…

Can Vitamin D deficiency influence muscle perfomance in post-menopausal women? A multicenter retrospective study

2018

Background: The presence of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) has been recently demonstrated in human muscle supporting the theory of a role of vitamin D in the proliferation and differentiation of muscle cells. So far only few studies investigated the association between vitamin D and muscle performance in postmenopausal women. Aim: To define the functional impact of vitamin D deficiency. Design: Multicenter retrospective study. Setting: Five Italian outpatient services of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM). Population: Postmenopausal women. Methods: We divided the population in two groups based on the threshold of 30 ng/mL as cut-off to define sufficient and insufficient serum levels o…

Exploration into Uric and Cardiovascular Disease: Uric Acid Right for heArt Health (URRAH) Project, A Study Protocol for a Retrospective Observationa…

2018

The relevance of cardiovascular role played by levels of serum uric acid is dramatically growing, especially as cardiovascular risk factor potentially able to exert either a direct deleterious impact or a synergic effect with other cardiovascular risk factors. At the present time, it still remains undefined the threshold level of serum uric acid able to contribute to the cardiovascular risk. Indeed, the available epidemiological case studies are not homogeneous, and some preliminary data suggest that the so-called "cardiovascular threshold limit" may substantially differ from that identified as a cut-off able to trigger the acute gout attack. In such scenario, there is the necessity to clar…

Long-term efficacy of lipoprotein apheresis and lomitapide in the treatment of homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH): a cross-national retr…

2021

Abstract Background Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) is a rare life-threatening condition that represents a therapeutic challenge. The vast majority of HoFH patients fail to achieve LDL-C targets when treated with the standard protocol, which associates maximally tolerated dose of lipid-lowering medications with lipoprotein apheresis (LA). Lomitapide is an emerging therapy in HoFH, but its place in the treatment algorithm is disputed because a comparison of its long-term efficacy versus LA in reducing LDL-C burden is not available. We assessed changes in long-term LDL-C burden and goals achievement in two independent HoFH patients’ cohorts, one treated with lomitapide in Ita…

Minimizing the dermatoscopic morphologic overlap between basal and squamous cell carcinoma: a retrospective analysis of initially misclassified tumou…

2020

BACKGROUND Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) have well-established dermatoscopic criteria that make them relatively easy to recognize on a clinical basis. However, even with the addition of dermatoscopy, a morphologic overlap between the two tumours does exist. OBJECTIVES To analyse the dermatoscopic morphology of clinically and dermatoscopically misclassified BCCs and SCCs, to identify factors causing the erroneous clinical interpretation and, therefore, minimize the morphologic overlap between BCC and SCC. METHODS Retrospective study including histopathologically diagnosed BCCs or SCCs that had been clinically inversely diagnosed. Their dermatoscopic images were…

Two-Step Digital Follow-up of Patients at High Risk for Melanoma: a Retrospective Analysis of 152 Patients

2021

Ultrasound-guided spinal fracture repositioning

1998

The management of narrowing spinal fragments in the operative treatment of spinal fractures remains an open question, in particular when the procedure is performed by a posterior approach. This article describes the use of intraoperative ultrasonography during spinal surgery. From 1990 to 1997, 116 spinal fractures were treated operatively at our clinic. Stabilization of the spine was achieved with the AO fixateur interne and the AO USS, respectively (Synthes, D-79224, Umkirch, Germany). For 60 cases who had a fractured posterior vertebral surface dislocated into the spinal canal, we used intraoperative ultrasonography to monitor the repositioning of the narrowing fragments. The patients un…
