Retrospective Study of Patients Diagnosed With Sweet Syndrome in the Health Area of a Tertiary Hospital in the Autonomous Community of Valencia

2012

Sweet syndrome is the most characteristic of the neutrophilic dermatoses. We performed a retrospective study of patients with Sweet syndrome seen in our department between 2001 and 2009, inclusive; the aims were to define the patient profile and to evaluate the clinical and epidemiological differences between subgroups. There were 24 patients (13 women and 11 men). The age distribution was similar in both sexes and showed 2 peaks, one in the fourth decade and the other in the eighth decade. The etiology was predominantly infectious or inflammatory, followed by the idiopathic form. There were 4 cases of paraneoplastic disease, 2 of which involved solid-organ tumors. One case was associated w…

Otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis in children: proposal of an experience-based treatment flowchart

2018

Purpose: To describe the prevalent clinical, laboratory, and radiological features of otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis (OLST) in children; to identify clinical predictors of outcome; to propose a management algorithm derived from experience. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted of the clinical records of patients with OLST, treated in a single tertiary care referral center for pediatric disease from 2006 to 2017. The inclusion criteria were pediatric age (0–16 years) and OLST diagnosis confirmed by a pre- and post-contrast CT or venography–MRI scan. Primary outcome measures were early (1–2 months) and late (6 months) sinus recanalization assessed by means of neuroimaging. Results:…

Closed versus open reduction of facial fractures in children and adolescents: A systematic review and meta-analysis

2020

Background Treatment of facial fractures in children and adolescents has always been a challenge for oral surgeon. The choice of treatment type must take into account several factors. This systematic review aimed to evaluate closed versus open reduction of facial fractures for pediatric facial fractures. Material and Methods A systematic review of the literature was conducted in three databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase and The Cochrane Library) in accordance with the PRISMA statement. The PICO question was: Conservative treatment is more appropriate than surgical treatment for reducing facial fractures in children and adolescents? The full papers of 41 references were analyzed in detail. Ele…

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy: can a diagnosis be made in patients not fulfilling electrodiagnostic criteria?

2021

Background and purpose The aim was to identify the clinical and diagnostic investigations that may help to support a diagnosis of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) in patients not fulfilling the European Federation of Neurological Societies and Peripheral Nerve Society (EFNS/PNS) electrodiagnostic criteria. Methods The data from patients with a clinical diagnosis of CIDP included in a national database were retrospectively reviewed. Results In all, 535 patients with a diagnosis of CIDP were included. This diagnosis fulfilled the EFNS/PNS criteria in 468 patients (87.2%) (definite in 430, probable in 33, possible in three, while two had chronic immune sensory p…

Analysis of the factors linked to a diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children

2017

Introduction: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neuropsychiatric disorder originating from multiple factors. The aim of this study is to determine the percentage of patients with ADHD out of all patients referred to our clinic for assessment, and to explore the epidemiological and clinical factors linked to this diagnosis. Patients and methods: Retrospective analytical study of a sample of patients under 15 years old sent to the paediatric neurology clinic for suspected ADHD. DSM-IV criteria were used for diagnosis. We completed a binary logistic regression analysis to determine which risk factors were associated with the diagnosis. Results: Of the 280 selected patients, …

Benefit of using an age-adjusted D-dimer cut-off

2015

Introduction: The association between a low-moderate pretest clinical probability and a negative D-dimer (DD) value is able to exclude the possibility of pulmonary embolism (PE). The value of DD seems to increase with age, reducing its specificity. Therefore, we intend to evaluate the usefulness of an age-adjusted cut-off value for age above 50 years, applying the formula suggested by Douma (age*10) set to our laboratory method (age*5) (1) . Patients and Methods: Observational, retrospective study from January to December 2011. DD test were performed to 1515 patients attended in the emergency room of our hospital according to the clinical suspicion made by the doctor who evaluated them. The…

Cancer in the first 18 months of life

2020

Introduction: Oncological-haematological disease continues to be the first cause of non-traumatic mortality in childhood, as well as a significant cause of morbidity. The patient less than 18-months-old has special clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic features that all paediatricians are interested in determining, with the aim of achieving greater survival and a lower morbidity throughout the lives of their patients. Material and methods: A retrospective, descriptive study was carried out using the clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic variables in patients less than 18-months-old diagnosed with an oncological-haematological that received chemotherapy in a Paediatric Oncology Unit between …

Characteristics and treatment of Multiple Sclerosis-related trigeminal neuralgia: An Italian multi-centre study

2019

Abstract Background The prevalence of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients is higher than in the general population and its management can be particularly challenging. Our aim is to describe the characteristics, treatment and prognostic factors of MS-related TN in a retrospective multicentre study. Methods Neurologists members of the RIREMS group (Rising Researchers in MS) enrolled MS patients with a TN diagnosis and filled out a spreadsheet comprising their clinical data. Results Population consisted of 298 patients. First-choice preventive treatments were carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine. A surgical procedure was performed in 81 (30%) patients, most commonly gamma …

A maChine and deep Learning Approach to predict pulmoNary hyperteNsIon in newbornS with congenital diaphragmatic Hernia (CLANNISH): Protocol for a re…

2021

Introduction Outcome predictions of patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) still have some limitations in the prenatal estimate of postnatal pulmonary hypertension (PH). We propose applying Machine Learning (ML), and Deep Learning (DL) approaches to fetuses and newborns with CDH to develop forecasting models in prenatal epoch, based on the integrated analysis of clinical data, to provide neonatal PH as the first outcome and, possibly: favorable response to fetal endoscopic tracheal occlusion (FETO), need for Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), survival to ECMO, and death. Moreover, we plan to produce a (semi)automatic fetus lung segmentation system in Magnetic Resonanc…
