Endonasal Approach for Nasal and Paranasal Sinus Tumor Removal

2001

Patients with benign (53) and malignant (22) tumors of the nose and paranasal sinuses were treated for tumor removal via an endonasal approach. Patient selection was based on tumor location (centrally) rather than histology. Tumors attainable by the endonasal approach were located in the nasal cavity, the ethmoid sinus, the sphenoid sinus and the medial wall of the maxillary sinus. Endonasal microscopic techniques including endonasal orbital decompression and endonasal closure of CSF-leaks were combined with surgical navigation tools in selected cases. Surgical trauma and morbidity could be minimized without compromising radicality of tumor removal. Postoperative hospitalization was compara…

Surgical treatment of choanal atresia with transnasal endoscopic approach with stentless single side-hinged flap technique: 5 year retrospective anal…

2017

NK/T-cell lymphomas 'nasal type': an italian multicentric retrospective survey

2006

Abstrac Objective: To evaluate the clinical characteristics and outcome of NK/T-cell lymphoma ‘nasal type’ developed in Italian patients. Patients: Between 1997 and 2004, 26 new cases of NK/T-cell lymphoma ‘nasal type’ were diagnosed in 10 Italian Hematology institutions. Results: All patients were Caucasian, male/female ratio was 19/7, with a median age of 50 years (range 20–80). In 23 cases presentation at the onset was in the nasal cavity or adjacent structures, in two cases the lymphoma onset with skin lesions was followed successively by rhynopharyngeal dissemination, while the remaining case had bone marrow and lymph node involvement followed by oro-pharyngeal involvement. Regarding t…

Short-Term Functional and Oncologic Outcomes of Nephron-Sparing Surgery for Renal Tumours ≥7cm

2011

Abstract Background Nephron-sparing surgery (NSS) for renal tumours preserves renal function and has become the standard approach for small renal tumours. Little is known about perioperative and oncologic outcomes of patients following NSS in renal tumours ≥7cm in the presence of a healthy contralateral kidney. Objective To analyse oncologic outcomes and perioperative morbidity in patients treated by NSS for renal tumours ≥7cm. Design, setting, and participants In total, 5767 patients were treated for renal tumours at two institutions from 1984 to 2009. In 91 patients, elective NSS was performed for renal tumours ≥7cm. Measurements Complication rates were assessed in detail and stratified u…

Autism is a prenatal disorder: Evidence from late gestation brain overgrowth.

2018

This retrospective study aimed to specify the critical period for atypical brain development in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using prenatal and postnatal head growth parameters. The sample consisted of 80 Caucasian, unrelated, idiopathic patients with ASD born after 1995. Fetal ultrasound parameters (head circumference [HC], abdominal circumference, and femur length) were obtained during the second and third trimesters of gestation. HC at birth and postnatal parameters at 12 and 24 months of age were also collected. Head overgrowth, assessed by HC, was highlighted during the second (20-26 weeks of amenorrhea) and third (28-36 weeks of amenorrhea) trimesters. Normal growth…

Impact of Individual Components of the Metabolic Syndrome on the Outcome of Patients with Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma Treated with Sorafenib

2017

Background/Aim: Individual components of the metabolic syndrome (MS) such as obesity or diabetes mellitus impair the prognosis of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) following curative treatment approaches or transarterial therapies. The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the impact of these factors on the overall survival (OS) of patients with advanced HCC treated with sorafenib. Methods: Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to assess the impact of individual components of the MS on the OS of 152 consecutive patients with advanced HCC treated with sorafenib. Resu…

Dual-Energy CT Material Density Iodine Quantification for Distinguishing Vascular From Nonvascular Renal Lesions: Normalization Reduces Intermanufact…

2019

OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a single, uniform normalized iodine threshold reduces variability and enables reliable differentiation between vascular and nonvascular renal lesions independent of the dual-energy CT (DECT) platform used. MATERIALS AND METHODS. In this retrospective, HIPAA-compliant, institutional review board-approved study, 247 patients (156 men, 91 women; mean age ± SD, 67 ± 12 years old) with 263 renal lesions (193 nonvascular, 70 vascular) underwent unenhanced single- energy and contrast-enhanced DECT scans. One hundred and six nonvascular and 38 vascular lesions were scanned on two dual-source DECT (dsDECT) scanners, and 87 nonvascular and…

Effects of Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms on Neuropsychological Test Performance: Complicating an Already Complicated Story

2011

Theoretical models of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) implicate neurocognitive dysfunction, particularly deficits in nonverbal memory and executive functioning, in the pathogenesis of the disorder. The opposite hypothesis (poor performance in neuropsychological test as an epiphenomenon of OCD symptoms) has rarely been contemplated although checking behavior, obsessional doubt, lack of motivation, and slowness as well as preoccupation with touching objects may result in secondary test impairment and mimic manifestations of neural dysfunction. A total of 60 patients with OCD and 30 healthy controls were tested with a multi-functional neuropsychological battery. At the end of the testing p…

Periodontal health and esthetic results in impacted teeth exposed by apically positioned flap technique.

2010

Objectives: This study evaluates the periodontal health status and the esthetic results of teeth subjected to orthodontic traction, after their exposure by an apically positioned flap. Study design: Fifteen patients were included in the study, ages between 11 and 28 years old. The fenestrated teeth and their homologous contralateral normally erupted teeth, used as control, were evaluated. Results: Statistically significant differences were found in the position of the gingival margin (p = 0.005), with an average distance between cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) and gingival margin of 2.47 mm (SD 1.19) in control teeth and of 1 mm (SD 1.31) in the operated teeth, and in the depth of palatal pro…

Promyelocytic leukemia (PML) gene expression is a prognostic factor in ampullary cancer patients

2008

Background: Promyelocytic leukemia (PML) tumor suppressor gene plays a key role in acute PML pathogenesis but its involvement in pathogenesis and prognosis of solid cancers has not been defined yet. Patients and methods: In all, 62 ampullary adenocarcinoma patients who underwent curative surgery between 1996 and 2005 were included. Expression analysis of PML was carried out by immunohistochemical staining and correlated with disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). Results: In 24 tumor specimens (38.7%), PML was classified as absent, in 16 (25.8%) as focally expressed and in 22 (35.5%) as diffusely expressed. By univariate analysis, DFS was significantly influenced by patholog…
