Meniscal ramp lesions: diagnostic performance of MRI with arthroscopy as reference standard

2021

Abstract Background The posteromedial meniscal region is gaining interest among orthopedic surgeons, as lesions of this area has been reported to be significantly associated with anterior cruciate ligament tears. The current imaging literature is unclear. Purpose To evaluate the diagnostic performance of MR in the detection of meniscal ramp lesions having arthroscopy as reference standard. Materials and methods We retrospectively included 56 patients (mean age of 25 ± 7 years; 14 females) from January to November 2017 with a arthroscopically proved ACL tear and posterior meniscocapsular separation. On preoperative MRI, two radiologists with 13 and 2 years’ experience in musculoskeletal imag…

Efficacy of acupuncture for the prophylaxis of migraine: a multicentre randomised controlled clinical trial.

2006

Our aim was to assess the efficacy of a part-standardised verum acupuncture procedure, in accordance with the rules of traditional Chinese medicine, compared with that of part-standardised sham acupuncture and standard migraine prophylaxis with beta blockers, calcium-channel blockers, or antiepileptic drugs in the reduction of migraine days 26 weeks after the start of treatment. This study was a prospective, randomised, multicentre, double-blind, parallel-group, controlled, clinical trial, undertaken between April 2002 and July 2005. Patients who had two to six migraine attacks per month were randomly assigned verum acupuncture (n=313), sham acupuncture (n=339), or standard therapy (n=308). …

Mucoceles of the oral cavity : a large case series (1994-2008) and a literature review

2009

Objectives: Evaluating data of patients affected by oral mucoceles, examined at the Unit of Oral Medicine and Pathology of the University of Milan between January 1994 and December 2008. Study Design: Concise review on oral mucoceles and analysis of the clinical files of patients who underwent excisional biopsy (patient age, medical history, diagnosis, date and site of the biopsy, histopathological diagnosis and recurrences if any). Results: During the period June 1994-December 2008, 158 mucoceles were observed (93 males and 65 females), with the most frequent site being the lower lip (53%) (p=0.001 by Fisher?s test). The mean age of the patients was 31.9 years, with a peak of occurrence in…

The craniocervical junction following successful haematopoietic stem cell transplantation for mucopolysaccharidosis type I H (Hurler syndrome)

2010

Mucopolysaccharidosis I Hurler (MPS IH) is a progressive multisystemic disorder caused by alpha-L-iduronidase deficiency. First choice of treatment in MPS IH children is haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The effect of HSCT has been shown to have limited influence on skeletal manifestations by poor penetration of musculoskeletal tissues by the enzyme derived from donor leucocytes. Aim of this study was to investigate the effect of HSCT on the craniocervical junction (CCJ) in Hurler patients. We analysed retrospectively sequential magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of 30 patients with Hurler disease treated by HSCT since 1982 at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, UK,…

Arachnoid cysts: does surgery improve epileptic seizures and headaches?

1995

During the period from 1985 to 1992 we treated 43 patients with intracranial arachnoid cysts (ACs). In this retrospective study we assessed the outcome of these patients with regard to non-specific symptoms such as headaches and epileptic seizures. Twelve patients had headaches of obscure origin and a mostly temporal located AC. Six of these 12 underwent surgery. After the operation 4 patients (4/6) had no further headaches, two remained unchanged. The other 6 conservatively treated patients (6/12) had further headaches. Ten of the 43 patients had epileptic seizures. One patient dropped out of the survey. Six of the 9 remaining patients had a temporal AC. Four of these 6 underwent surgery; …

Odontogenic tumours in Nigeria : a multicentre study of 582 cases and review of the literature

2018

Background The objective of this study was to classify the various types of odontogenic tumours (OTs) using the newly updated 2017 world health organization (WHO) histological typing and to analyze the prevalence of these tumours among Nigerians as well as to compare the results obtained with reports from world-wide studies. Material and Methods The records of four major tertiary hospitals in Nigeria were reviewed over a 12-year (2004-2015) period. Lesions diagnosed as odontogenic tumours were classified into four groups according to the 2017 WHO histological typing. Data which consisted of age, sex and site were analyzed using SPSS for Window (version 20.0; SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL) and freq…

A retrospective clinicopathological study on oral lichen planus and malignant transformation: Analysis of 518 cases

2011

Objective: To investigate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of a relatively large cohort of patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) from eastern China. Study design: A total of 518 patients with histologically confirmed OLP in a long-term follow-up period (6 months-21.5 years) were retrospectively reviewed in our clinic. Results: Of the 518 patients, 353 females and 165 males were identified. The average age at diagnosis was 46.3 years (range 9-81 years) with the buccal mucosa being the most common site (87.8%). At initial presentation, white lichen and red lichen was seen in 52.3% and 47.7% patients, respectively. Of these, 5 (0.96%) patients previously diagnosed clinically a…

Generic vancomycin products: Analysis of serum concentrations in patients with acute myeloid leukemia.

2013

Summary Concerns have recently emerged about the quality of generic vancomycin products. Our aim is to analyze serum vancomycin concentrations measured 48 hours after the start of an empirical treatment regimen in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who received one of the two generic vancomycin products available in France. Patients and methods Seventy-nine AML patients treated with vancomycin during two study periods were included in the study. Our vancomycin dosing regimen was based on the patients’ total body weight adjusted for renal clearance. Results A total of 93 serum vancomycin concentrations were collected: 31 in period 1 and 62 in period 2. In bivariate analysis, the mean…

Trends in excess mortality in follicular lymphoma at a population level

2015

Background Since the 1990s and since the development of humanised monoclonal antibodies in 1998, the treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphoma has undergone profound changes. Follicular lymphoma (FL) was the first to benefit from this treatment, and several clinical trials have shown a significant improvement in overall survival, but little information is available at a population level. Objective Our objective was to estimate changes in FL-specific mortality at a population level, with an appropriate methodology. Methods Two French retrospective population-based studies on FL were conducted, one from 1995 to 2004, in 1477 patients, and one from 1995 to 2010, in 451 patients. Trends in excess morta…
