Although the viable but not culturable (VBNC) state has been studied in detail in bacteria, it has been suggested that maintenance of viability with loss of culturability also exists in eukaryotic cells, such as in the wine spoilage yeast Brettanomyces. To provide conclusive evidence for the existence of a VBNC state in this yeast, we investigated its capacity to become viable and nonculturable after sulfite stress, and its ability to recover culturability after stressor removal. Sulfite addition induced loss of culturability but maintenance of viability. The Norwegian authorities started a nationwide free school fruit program in 2007, implemented in all secondary schools (grades 8–10) and combined schools (grades 1–10) in Norway. The program ended in 2014. This study evaluates the effect of ending the nationwide free school fruit program on the consumption of fruit, vegetables, and unhealthy snacks among Norwegian sixth and seventh graders. The study sample consists of pupils at 18 schools that participated in all data collections in the Fruits and Vegetables Make the Marks project (FVMM), initiated in 2001, with new data collections in 2008 and 2018. The present investigation addresses the gravity of mispronunciation for the intelligibility of English spoken by L1 Finland-Swedish teenagers. Previous research on the topic has been scarce, and even though there is some knowledge about the typical pronunciation challenges faced by this learner group, there is hardly any empirical research on the extent to which the typical mispronunciations actually cause misunderstandings. Tässä artikkelissa tiivistän väitöskirjani neljän osatutkimuksen pääteemat ja tulokset. Väitöskirjani sijoittuu soveltavan kielitieteen oppiaineeseen, ja sen on tarkoitus hyödyttää kieltenopetusta ja ääntämisenoppimista. Väitöstutkimuksessani syvennyin suomenkielisen puhuman ruotsin ääntämiseen ja sen ymmärrettävyyteen. Aihe on kiinnostava, sillä helposti ymmärrettävää ääntämistä on jo pidempään pidetty sopivana tavoitteena kielten opiskelussa. Mikä ääntämisestä sitten tekee helposti ymmärrettävää? The goal of English pronunciation teaching has shifted from native-likeness to intelligibility. Especially in EFL contexts, pushing learners to sound like L1 speakers is difficult to justify, whereas becoming intelligible is an easily justifiable, practical learning goal.
