Tutkimus on osa laajempaa projektikokonaisuutta, jonka yleisenä tavoitteena on kartoittaa entisten huippu-urheilijoiden terveyttä. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää metabolisen oireyhtymän (MBO), vyötärölihavuuden, kohonneen paastoglukoosin ja tyypin 2 diabeteksen esiintyvyyttä heillä. Tutkimusaineiston (N=599) muodostavat entiset mieshuippu-urheilijat, jotka ovat edustaneet Suomea vuosina 1920-1965 vähintään kerran kansainvälisesti. Verrokit (N=207) on valittu samoista armeijan palvelukseen astumiseristä (A1-luokka). Edustettuina ovat kestävyys- (N=41), voima- (N=107) ja joukkuelajit (N=244). This research i) examined the influence of a brief nutrition-based intervention among primary care patients in changing nutrition and clinical values related to metabolic syndrome (study 1), and ii) assessed nutrition and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its clinical determinants among primary care patients in different sociodemographic groups (study 2). Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a known risk factor for cognitive decline. Using polygenic rat models selectively bred for high and low intrinsic exercise capacity and simultaneously modelling as low and high innate risk factor for MetS respectively, we have previously shown that adult animals with lower exercise capacity/higher MetS risk perform poorly in tasks requiring flexible cognition. However, it is not known whether these deficits in cognition are present already at young age. Abstract Objective To compare colorectal cancer (CRC) incidences in carriers of pathogenic variants of the MMR genes in the PLSD and IMRC cohorts, of which only the former included mandatory colonoscopy surveillance for all participants. Methods CRC incidences were calculated in an intervention group comprising a cohort of confirmed carriers of pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in mismatch repair genes (path_MMR) followed prospectively by the Prospective Lynch Syndrome Database (PLSD). Abstract Background We previously reported that in pathogenic mismatch repair (path_MMR) variant carriers, the incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) was not reduced when colonoscopy was undertaken more frequently than once every 3 years, and that CRC stage and interval since last colonoscopy were not correlated.
