Rubberised bitumen manufacturing assisted by rheological measurements

2015

This paper investigates the effect of processing temperature and time on the rheological proper- ties of recycled tyre rubber-modified bitumens (RTR-MBs) produced using two different base binders and an ambient ground crumb rubber modifier (CRM). The production of the RTR- MBs was accomplished by means of a standard Brookfield rotational viscometer together with a modified impeller, dual helical impeller, to allow mixing as well as real-time viscosity measurements of the produced RTR-MBs. The rheological properties of the final RTR-MBs were determined by means of standard dynamic mechanical analysis oscillatory and multiple stress creep recovery testing using a dynamic shear rheometer. The …

Rheological properties of progesterone microemulsions: Influence of xanthan and chitosan biopolymer concentration

2008

In this preformulations study, rheological properties of microemulsions with progesterone (1%) were studied to analyze the effect of xanthan and chitosan at different concentrations (0.5–3%). Steady shear and oscillatory rheological properties were analyzed using a controlled stress rheometer. Steady shear data were satisfactorily adjusted to the Carreau model. For all preparations, shear-thinning behavior was observed. Zero shear viscosity (η0) increased with the biopolymer concentration. The results from dynamic experiments showed the behavior of all preparations with xanthan gum and those of chitosan to be characteristic of weak gels and liquid-like solutions, respectively. The correlati…

Prediction of the flow curves of thermoplastic polymer/clay systems from torque data

2014

Abstract The aim of this work was to determine some relevant rheological parameters of polymer/clay systems using mixing torque and mixing speed data obtained during processing in an internal mixer. The method used was originally proposed by Marquez et al. for monophase polymers, and is here applied to polymer/clay systems for the first time. Several clay-containing composites based on different polymer matrices (i.e., LDPE, HDPE, PA6, EVA) were used to verify the effectiveness of the method for measuring the flow curves of these polymer/clay systems. The results indicated that, for all the systems at low clay level, the rheological curves calculated with the Marquez method fit quite well t…

Origin of the low-frequency plateau and the light-scattering slow mode in semidilute poly(ethylene glycol) solutions

2019

A low-frequency plateau is often found in the rheological spectra of various kinds of semidilute solutions of polymers and other colloids; also, many such solutions have been reported to show slow-modes in their dynamic light scattering autocorrelation functions. Both these observations may lead to the hypothesis of weak associative network structures built by the dissolved polymer chains or colloidal building blocks. To challenge this hypothesis, we conduct a series of comparative studies on semidilute solutions of poly(ethylene glycol) by using classical rheology as well as passive microrheology based on dynamic light scattering, along with structural studies using static light scattering…

Are polymers suitable rock analogs?

2002

To evaluate if a polymer is suitable for analog modeling, it is essential to know the rheological properties of the material. Polymers used in analog modeling exhibit a complex rheological behavior; only part of which has been taken into account in most modeling studies. The mechanical behavior is strongly dependent on strain rate and temperature, and is characterized by specific dependencies of the storage and loss moduli, related to the elasticity and viscosity, on the deformation rate (frequency). We have measured the storage and loss moduli at a broad range of strain rates and strains, using an oscillatory parallel-disk rheometer. Investigated materials are polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), …
