Segmentation and Navigation Support of Clinical Data Sets to Simulate the Bronchoscopy and Rhinoscopy

A training and simulation system for therapy planning is developed based on patient specific imaging data. A real endoscope is used for navigation through the virtual patient. For this purpose sensors were built in the endoscope in order to track the translation, rotation and the angle of the distal end. Pre-processing (segmentation, tissue characterization) speeds-up the volume rendering up to real-time. Collision detection enables a realistic fly through the virtual patient.

Composite graft: a simple option for nasal lining.

Background  We present our experience in the reconstruction of full-thickness losses of the substance of the nose using a forehead flap and a composite graft (taken from the anterior surface of the concha and adequately shaped) as both support and endonasal lining. This technique has never been described for the reconstruction of large full-thickness losses of the substance of the nose. The donor site of the composite graft in the concha is repaired by a Masson retroauricular flap. Accidental migration of dental implant into the nasal cavity: Spontaneous expulsion through the nose

Implant migration into the nasal fossa is a rare complication and it requires extraction by anterior rhinoscopy. We report a clinical case of placement of short dental implants, fixed or intruded in the nasal fossa floor, which was aspirated by the patient and spontaneously expelled a few days later. To the best of our knowledge, there have been no reports of spontaneously expulsion through the nasal cavity. Key words:Dental implant, nasal cavity, accidental migration.
