Erenumab and Possible CGRP Effect on Chronotype in Chronic Migraine: A Real-Life Study of 12 Months Treatment
2023
The introduction of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) directed against the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), or its receptor (CGRPr), revolutionized migraine management due to their high efficacy and few side effects. Data suggest that the CGRP may even be implicated in circadian rhythm, but studies about the effect of anti-CGRP treatments on sleep are still lacking. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of erenumab (70 and 140 mg per month), a human mAb directed against CGRPr, on chronotype in chronic migraineurs; secondly, we assessed its efficacy, safety, and the effects on anxiety and depression. Sleep was evaluated using self-administrable questionnaires investigating …
Different moment, different tune : how emotional perception of music changes with the time of day
2012
According to the classical music tradition of Northern India, the ability of a song to induce certain emotions depends on the time of day: playing a song at the right time is said to maximise its emotional effect. Transposing this idea into a Western context, I decided to investigate this claim by combining findings in chronobiology with findings in music and emotion. It has already been established that our mood fluctuations follow a cyclical pattern. Besides, it is a known fact that our current mood influences our ability to perceive emotions. However, no one has ever linked these elements together and studied diurnal mood variations and their effect on perceived emotions in music. To tes…
A methodological approach to exploring the rhythm of classroom discourse in a cumulative frame in science teaching
2014
The purpose of this study was to characterise the nature and purpose of different types of classroom discourse and to explore how the rhythm of classroom discourse provides a cumulative frame for the teaching of science. The overall data consisted of a teaching sequence of eight lessons on the moment of force as taught to physiotherapy students at a Finnish University of Applied Sciences. Our in-depth multiple timescale analysis of two episodes illustrated in this study shows examples how cumulation was instantiated by the different types of classroom discourse. The methodology and findings of this study have implications both for teacher education and further research. peerReviewed
Daily rhythms of young children in the 24/7 economy : A comparison of children in day care and day and night care
2017
The study explored temporal variation in children’s moods and compared children in regular day care with those in day and night care in Finland. To examine variation in children’s experiences, a mobile diary was used. The participants comprised 32 young children and their parents and day care personnel. Adults evaluated children’s moods three times daily over 1 week. A clear weekday–weekend rhythm was found among children in day care, who displayed more negative moods, due to frequent hurried mornings. Children in day and night care had more irregular mood rhythms. Boys were evaluated as displaying more negative moods than girls. peerReviewed
Training machine learning models with synthetic data improves the prediction of ventricular origin in outflow tract ventricular arrhythmias
2022
In order to determine the site of origin (SOO) in outflow tract ventricular arrhythmias (OTVAs) before an ablation procedure, several algorithms based on manual identification of electrocardiogram (ECG) features, have been developed. However, the reported accuracy decreases when tested with different datasets. Machine learning algorithms can automatize the process and improve generalization, but their performance is hampered by the lack of large enough OTVA databases. We propose the use of detailed electrophysiological simulations of OTVAs to train a machine learning classification model to predict the ventricular origin of the SOO of ectopic beats. We generated a synthetic database of 12-l…
Melatonin levels in Parkinson's disease: Drug therapy versus electrical stimulation of the internal globus pallidus
1997
The objective of our work was to measure plasma melatonin levels in patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) following electrical stimulation of the internal globus pallidus (GPi), and to compare these levels with groups of PD patients under drug therapy and healthy controls. The levels of melatonin were measured twice daily at 1000 and 1200. The GPi stimulation at 130 Hz lowered melatonin levels, while no changes were observed in the absence of stimulation. The melatonin levels from healthy subjects were lower than those observed in PD patients. The melatonin levels from PD patients under drug therapy were also measured during the night (2000-2400-0400) and at 0800 in order to observe their …
Involvement of circadian oscillation(s) in the photoperiodic time measurement and the induction of reproductive diapause in a northern Drosophila spe…
2013
An ability to predict forthcoming changes in environmental conditions and get prepared for them in advance is crucial for the survival and reproduction of organisms living in a seasonally changing environment. We have studied the possible involvement of circadian oscillator(s) in the photoperiodic timer controlling seasonal responses by tracing Drosophila montana females' diapause induction in constant darkness and in a classical Nanda-Hamner experiment. Nearly all females developed ovaries in continuous darkness, which shows the direct development to be their default developmental pathway in the absence of photoperiods. In Nanda-Hamner experiment the females' diapause incidence was close t…
Mapping and quantification of cryptochrome expression in the brain of the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum.
2021
Aphids are paradigmatic photoperiodic animals often used to study the role of the circadian clock in the seasonal response. Previously, we described some elements of the circadian clock core (genes period and timeless) and output (melatonin, AANATs and PTTH) that could have a role in the regulation of the aphid seasonal response. More recently we identified two opsins (C-ops and SWO4) as candidate input photoperiodic receptors. In the present report, we focus on the study of cryptochromes (cry) as photoreceptors of the circadian clock and discuss their involvement in the seasonal response. We analyze the expression of cry1 and cry2 genes in a circadian and seasonal context, and map their ex…
The Effects of Microelectrophoretically Applied Melatonin, Putative Transmitters, Thyroxine and Sex Hormones on the Electrical Activity of Pineal Cel…
1981
ABSTRACT The effects of microelectrophoretic application of melatonin, noradrenaline, acetylcholine, thyroxine, testosterone and oestrone on pineal cell electrical activity were evaluated. With the exception of acetylcholine and oestrone pineal cells showed a circadian rhythm in sensitivity to the application of the substances. It is apparent from these studies, that (1) transmitters and hormones can bring about direct changes in the firing frequency of pineal cells, (2) all pineal cells do not respond to these substances in the same way and (3) that melatonin either produced in the pineal organ or reaching the gland via the general circulation may be capable of directly influencing the cel…
