In vitro synthesis of dopamine and noradrenaline in the isolated rat pineal gland: day-night variations and effects of electrical stimulation.
1989
: Isolated rat pineal glands were incubated in vitro in a medium containing [I4C]dopamine or [14C]tyrosine, and the tissue contents of l4C-labelled and total dopamine and noradrenaline were determined by HPLC followed by electrochemical detection and scintillation spectrometry. During incubation with [l4C]dopamine, the labelled amine accumulated in pineal glands and was partially converted into [l4C]noradrenaline. Nomifensine, a neuronal amine uptake blocker, largely inhibited the accumulation of [l4C]dopamine and the formation of [14C]noradrenaline. These experiments demonstrated dopamine β-hydroxylase activity in the sympathetic nerves of the pineal gland. During incubation with [14C]tyro…
Arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase gene expression in retina and pineal gland of rats under various photoperiods
2004
Abstract The present study examines how the circadian oscillators in the retina and the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) respond to changes in photoperiod. ArylalkylamineN-acetyltransferase (aa-nat) gene expression studied by quantitative RT-PCR revealed that in adult Sprague–Dawley rats kept under different light–dark (LD) cycles for two weeks the temporal pattern of AA-NAT mRNA expression was identical in retina and pineal gland. In both tissues, the time span between the onset of darkness and the nocturnal rise in AA-NAT mRNA expression was 3 h under LD 20:4, 6 h under LD 12:12, and 15 h under LD 4:20. As aa-nat expression in the pineal gland is regulated by the circadian oscillator in SCN,…
Zirkadiane Serotonin- und Melatonin-Serumspiegel bei Anorexia-nervosa-Patientinnen im Vergleich zu normal-menstruierenden Frauen
1996
Day and night rhythms of melatonin and serotonin were measured in four female anorexia nervosa patients and for comparison in a control group with normal 28-day menstrual cycle. In the anorexia nervosa group the levels of gonadotropins and sexual steroids were distinctly lowered. In the LHRH test the hormonal profile showed pubertal to prepubertal patterns of secretion with an only moderate increase of LH and distinct shifting of the LH/FSH ratio in direction of FSH. For both groups the 24-hour profiles of melatonin and serotonin showed a normal cycle, i.e. melatonin had its maximum by night, whereas serotonin in contrast displayed its highest values by day. However, in the group of patient…
Circadian rhythm and effects of light on cAMP content of the dwarf hamster suprachiasmatic nucleus
1998
The present study was conducted in the dwarf hamster (Phodopus sungorus) to investigate whether a circadian rhythm is present in the content of the second messenger cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP) in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the endogenous clock in mammals. In animals held under light/dark conditions (LD), we observed high levels at the end of the light phase and low levels during the night in frozen SCN punches. In animals held in continuous dark, a similar rhythm was seen although a second peak was present in the subjective day. In senile hamsters under LD, the decrease of cAMP levels at the light transition was not seen. These data, obtained for the first time from …
Pituitary resistance to thyroid hormone action with preserved circadian rhythm of thyrotropin in a postmenopausal woman.
1992
We assessed the 24-h behavior of circulating TSH and the dopaminergic control on TSH release in a postmenopausal woman, who had elevated levels of serum thyroid hormones and an inappropriately high concentration of serum TSH, indicating pituitary resistance to thyroid hormone action. The patient was found to have a daily profile of serum TSH similar to that of normal subjects, except for the persistently elevated 24 h levels, suggesting that alterations in thyroid hormone negative feedback control did not affect substantially circadian TSH rhythm. The acute administration of a dopamine antagonist drug (metoclopramide) resulted in a markedly elevated peak of serum TSH, similar both in the mo…
Circadian variations of ?synaptic? bodies in the pineal glands of Brattleboro rats
1990
The function of the mammalian pineal gland is regulated primarily by the sympathetic system. Arginine-vasopressin (AVP) may also be involved in the regulation of pineal melatonin synthesis under experimental conditions. The present study was conducted in the AVP-deficient rat strain, the Brattleboro rat, to investigate whether the numbers and rhythms of pineal "synaptic" bodies in this strain are different from those found in intact rats. AVP or its non-vasoconstrictive analog, deamino-D-AVP, was also injected intra-arterially in Brattleboro or Sprague-Dawley rats to test whether this procedure influences "synaptic" body numbers. Brattleboro rats were killed at different time-points through…
Development of day-night rhythmicity in "synaptic" ribbon numbers in the pinealocytes of posthatch chicks kept under either natural photoperiodic con…
1991
: Pineal synaptic ribbons (SR) undergo characteristic changes over a period of 24 hr under natural photoperiodic conditions in various vertebrates, being low in number during daytime and elevated at night. During posthatch development of chicks, the rhythmicity of SR numbers is reported to appear at the age of about 2 weeks. Because the influence of external light during the growth phase of chicks on the development of day-night rhythmicity in SR numbers is unknown, we studied day-night differences in SR numbers in the pinealocytes of chicks at the posthatch ages of 15, 17, and 19 days; chicks had previously been kept under natural photoperiodic conditions or continuous illumination. Under …
Effects of assisted training with neurofeedback on EEG measures, executive function and mood in a healthy sample
2015
The training in neurofeedback (NF) consists of teaching individuals to modify, adjust and enhance their brain activity pattern. The aim of our research was to evaluate the effect of training on cognitive processes, specifically executive function, and mood in a non-clinical sample. A sample of 30 female college students were assigned to three groups: RH: right hemisphere (n = 10), LH: left hemisphere (n = 10) and control (n = 10). The dominance pattern of beta and the inhibition of the theta pattern were trained in a single session. Measures of executive function (Iowa Gambling Test) and questionnaires of mood were taken pre and post training. We found that NF training produced significant …
Most hippocampal CA1 pyramidal cells in rabbits increase firing during awake sharp-wave ripples and some do so in response to external stimulation an…
2020
Hippocampus forms neural representations of real-life events including multimodal information of spatial and temporal context. These representations, i.e. organized sequences of neuronal firing are repeated during following rest and sleep, especially when so-called sharp-wave ripples (SPW-Rs) characterize hippocampal local-field potentials. This SPW-R –related replay is thought to underlie memory consolidation. Here, we set out to explore how hippocampal CA1 pyramidal cells respond to the conditioned stimulus during trace eyeblink conditioning and how these responses manifest during SPW-Rs in awake adult female New Zealand White rabbits. Based on reports in rodents, we expected SPW-Rs to ta…
