In most patients, chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection persists despite antiviral treatment with interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) and ribavirin. The aim of the study was to determine whether HCV could evade cellular immune responses through mutations within T cell epitopes. Viral sequences flanking four major CTL epitopes within the HCV core and envelope regions were analyzed by PCR amplification, cloning and sequencing in seven HLA-A2 positive HCV patients before, during and after antiviral therapy. Additions to the Indian oribatid mite fauna, with description of a new species of the genus <em>Niphocepheus</em> (Acari, Oribatida)

An annotated checklist of oribatid mite taxa from three sites of India is presented. It includes 71 species/ subspecies, 55 genera and 35 families. Twenty nine species/subspecies are recorded for the first time in India; five species/subspecies—Trhypochthonius tectorum stercus, Hermanniella aliverdievae, Sphodrocepheus tridactylus, Caenosamerus spatiosus, Dolicheremaeu distinctus—are recorded for the first time in the Oriental region. Niphocepheus neotrichus sp. nov. (Niphocepheidae) is described; it differs from other known species of Niphocepheus by the presence of epimeral neotrichy and three pairs of anal setae.

Oribatid mites (Acari: Oribatida) in boreal forest floor and decaying wood

Summary We studied the oribatid mite communities in forest floor and in decaying wood in pine (Pinus sylvestris), spruce (Picea abies) and deciduous (mainly Betula pendula and B. pubescens) forests at different latitudes in Finland. The study sites were either in mature managed forests or in old-growth forests in nature reserves. Altogether 78 sites were sampled in 2004 and 2005, yielding a total of 38,145 oribatid mites belonging to 133 species, of which four were new to Finland. Oribatid mite communities differed in terms of total number and community structure between forest types and latitudes within the boreal forest zone. Little is known about the potential effects of insertions and deletions (indels) on the evolutionary dynamics of hepatitis C virus (HCV). In fact, the consequences of indels on antiviral treatment response are a field of investigation completely unexplored.
