Occurrence of two rare species from order Lampriformes: Crestfish Lophotus lacepede (Giorna, 1809) and scalloped ribbonfish Zu cristatus(Bonelli, 181…
2017
The bony fish Lophotus lacepede (Giorna, 1809) and Zu cristatus (Bonelli, 1819) are the two species rarely recorded within the Mediterranean basin, usually reported as accidentally captured in depth (mesopelagic) fishing operations. In the current work, we present the first record of L. lacepede and Z. cristatus in fishing catches from southwestern Tyrrhenian Sea. Moreover, in order to improve existent biological/ ecological knowledge, some bio-related aspects such as feeding aspect, sexual maturity and age estimate have been discussed.
Orientational dynamics of fluctuating dipolar particles assembled in a mesoscopic colloidal ribbon
2017
We combine experiments and theory to investigate the dynamics and orientational fluctuations of ferromagnetic microellipsoids that form a ribbonlike structure due to attractive dipolar forces. When assembled in the ribbon, the ellipsoids display orientational thermal fluctuations with an amplitude that can be controlled via application of an in-plane magnetic field. We use video microscopy to investigate the orientational dynamics in real time and space. Theoretical arguments are used to derive an analytical expression that describes how the distribution of the different angular configurations depends on the strength of the applied field. The experimental data are in good agreement with the…
Electroburning of few-layer graphene flakes, epitaxial graphene, and turbostratic graphene discs in air and under vacuum
2015
Graphene-based electrodes are very promising for molecular electronics and spintronics. Here we report a systematic characterization of the electroburning (EB) process, leading to the formation of nanometer-spaced gaps, on different types of few-layer graphene (namely mechanically exfoliated graphene on SiO2, graphene epitaxially grown on the C-face of SiC and turbostratic graphene discs deposited on SiO2) under air and vacuum conditions. The EB process is found to depend on both the graphene type and on the ambient conditions. For the mechanically exfoliated graphene, performing EB under vacuum leads to a higher yield of nanometer-gap formation than working in air. Conversely, for graphene…
Welfare State Development, Individual Deprivations and Income Inequality: A cross-country analysis in Latin America and the Caribbean
2019
Several scholars have confirmed the role that the welfare state (WS) plays in reducing poverty, promoting equality and ensuring the common wellbeing. One of the limitations of the scholarship has been the conceptualization and operationalization of the WS and poverty as one-dimensional variables. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between welfare state development –as a one-dimensional and multidimensional variable-, single-dimensions deprivations and income inequality in Latin America and the Caribbean, before and after controlling for demographic and cyclical factors. The WS is operationalized taking into account its multidimensional nature. Three individual deprivat…
New nanobiohybrid engineering composed of titanate nanoribbons for regenerative medicine
2012
This research work is devoted to new nanohybrid engineering composed of titanate nanoribbons for regenerative medicine. Over a first phase, nanoribbons were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment and their morphological, structural and chemical features were defined. A fine characterization by means of different techniques of transmission electron microscopy mainly enabled to determine their thickness; dimension which had never been measured so far. Subsequently, titanate nanoribbons were functionalized by different home-made heterobifunctional PEG. Those polymers present at one of their extremities specific functional groups being able to couple with numerous biological molecules. Some coll…

Preparation of Graphene Nanoribbons (GNRs) as an Electronic Component with the Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs)
2015
Abstract Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have a well-defined nanostructure to exhibit high electrical conductivity and chemical stability, and have been used as an advanced material to make electrodes of super-capacitor. Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), as manufactured by unzipping the CNTs, have more flexible adjustable electrical properties than CNTs, and are regarded an even more promising material for super-capacitor electrodes. This paper presented a series of attempts to prepare GNRs by chemically treating multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs); this is, an Oxidation-Reduction method was tried to make GNRs by unzipping MWCNTs longitudinally. Efforts were made in various trials to find conditions …
Curvature in graphene nanoribbons generates temporally and spatially focused electric currents
2015
Today graphene nanoribbons and other graphene-based nanostructures can be synthesized with atomic precision. But while investigations have concentrated on straight graphene ribbons of fixed crystal orientation, ribbons with intrinsic curvature have remained mainly unexplored. Here, we investigate electronic transport in intrinsically curved graphene nanoribbons coupled to straight leads using two computational approaches. Stationary approach shows how transport gaps are affected both by the straight leads and by the degree of edge asymmetry in the curved ribbons. An advanced time-dependent approach shows that behind the façade of calm stationary transport the currents run violently: curvatu…
General Approach to the Description of Fundamental Properties of Disordered Nanosized Media
2017
Physics of non-regular nanosystems is a branch of physics dealing with nanoagents – nanoparticles when non-regular nanosized morphological characteristics predetermine the nature and essence of physical phenomenon (nanophenomenon). In particular, multiple technological interfaces of nanoparticles with morphologically regular systems imply a creation of micro- or mesostructures with essential nanodimensional effects (e.g. in various schemes of functionalization of nanocarbon systems, viz. carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), graphene nanoflakes (GNFs), carbon-based nanoaerogels and nanofoams, etc.). However, classes of nanomaterials, in addition to nanocarbon systems, can be…
Numerical Modelling for Assessing the Structural Efficiency of CAM® Reinforcement System for Masonry Walls
2022
A large portion of the Italian building heritage is made of masonry construc-tions, which were erected in the first decades of the last century and were conceived to support gravitational loads only. Many research activities have been carried out in order to propose retrofitting techniques aimed at improving seismic behaviour of existing ma-sonry buildings. The present paper focuses on the CAM® reinforcing system. Such a retrofitting technique, which is widely used in Italy, consists in the application of pre-tensioned stainless steel ribbons on existing masonry walls, conferring to them addi-tional strength, ductility and beneficial confinement effects. The preliminary outcomes of a common…
