Identity and War in Michael Ondaatje’s
2012
Abstract This paper addresses the issue of identity in relation to war through a close reading of Michael Ondaatje’s The English Patient. It investigates the connections between war and the construction of identity, focusing on aspects such as violence and death. In his novel Ondaatje uncovers private histories alongside the framing events of World War Two. Kip’s perception of war and his way of living through it suggest that the engagement on the world’s battlefield is riddled with inner conflicts separating people or bringing them together. In The English Patient what is at issue is the quest for a redefinition of the self: Hanna, Kirpal Singh and Almásy attempt to liberate the self throu…
Sull'orientamento escatologico della filosofia
2018
The theme of eschatology is presented as a central question for philosophy in the light of the hermeneutic articulation, proposed by Ricoeur, between archeology, teleology and eschatology. At the same time, while Ricoeur keeps the eschaton separate from any possibility of full understanding, the essay tries to see eschatology in the light of the full entrance of "salvation" into the dimension of finitude and history, and therefore in its character of adequate fulfillment of understanding
La "Hermenéutica del sí" de Paul Ricoeur. Entre Descartes y Nietzsche
2006
This paper analyses P. Ricoeur's proposal about personal identity, entitled hermeneutics of the self, which aims to fill a halfway philosophical place between Descartes and Nietzsche. The author of Soimême comme un autre offers a narrative solution that will be critically considered according to the relation that the hermeneutics of the self establishes between philosophy and literature.

Tra metaforizzazione e simbolizzazione: la metafora come dispositivo linguistico di visualizzazione?
2023
In this paper we will consider metaphor as a phenomenon that lies at the interface between language and imagination. By focusing on how this phenomenon works, we will attempt to shed light on how symbols work. After analyzing the relationship between metaphor and sym bol to highlight the main similarities and differences, we will examine the functions of metaphor with particular reference to the thought of Paul Ricœur. In particular, we will highlight the role that the French thinker attributes to the imagination in constructing the meaning of a metaphor. Finally, after highlighting the relationship between images and words, between the linguistic dimension and the dimension of aisthesis in…
Speaking from above and below -The Gospel of John as metaphorical and narrative reference to a distant reality
2018
The one who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks from the earth (Jn 3:31). How can one speak from the earth and at the same time about heavenly things? The Fourth Gospel (FG) creates a tension between these two realms of perception and cognition. To reach beyond or above the earth we have to transcend time and space, our individual context and limited visual horizon. To overcome the obstacle of confined space we can rely on metaphors since their key faculty is to transport (μετα-φέρω). To transcend the limitations of time we can recruit the genre of narration. These two modes of references to a reality that is located and dated beyond our realms are at work in the FG. With Rico…
Identità narrativa e dono teleologico in Paul Ricoeur
2015
This essay examines the Ricoeurian idea of narrative identity, focusing on the ethical tension which characterizes this concept and which seems to reveal a teleological dynamism intimately marking the adventure of subjectivity. The implications of such telos – which is both a gift and a task – progressively emerge through the chapters of Ricoeur’s book Oneself as Another highlighting a selfhood capable of attestation facing the manifold dialectical game with otherness. With regard to the original sense of this challenging existential narrative, Ricouer – as this article points out – manifests an agnostic philosophical reserve, the meaning of which deserves special attention.
