Amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H) depositions on polyoxymethylene: Substrate influence on the characteristics of the developing coatings

Abstract After oxygen plasma treatment polyoxymethylene (POM) material was exposed to acetylene plasma to progressively deposit two different types of amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H) films. Radio frequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF-PECVD) was used to generate both plasma processes. The surface morphology of the coated samples has been investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and their chemical composition by Diffusive Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform (DRIFT) and Raman spectroscopy. Activity monitoring of a gaseous tritium source by beta induced X-ray spectrometry

Abstract For monitoring and control of gaseous tritium sources in fuel circulation systems of fusion reactors beta induced X-ray spectrometry (BIXS) seems to be an applicable method. The characteristics of a BIXS monitoring setup built at TLK were examined. A low-noise silicon drift detector (SDD) was used together with two thin beryllium windows evaporated with gold films of 100 nm for efficient X-ray production. The measured X-ray intensity was proportional to the tritium partial pressure and the average detection efficiency was evaluated as 32.6 × 10−8 cps/Bq. A tritium memory effect was revealed. A Carleson type inequality for fully nonlinear elliptic equations with non-Lipschitz drift term

This paper concerns the boundary behavior of solutions of certain fully nonlinear equations with a general drift term. We elaborate on the non-homogeneous generalized Harnack inequality proved by the second author in (Julin, ARMA -15), to prove a generalized Carleson estimate. We also prove boundary H\"older continuity and a boundary Harnack type inequality.

Cerro del Hierro, Spain: the largest exposed early Cambrian palaeokarst

AbstractWe study the largest exposed example of an early Cambrian palaeokarst, associated with laterites and developed during rifting of the Ossa–Morena Zone. The lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, facies and the genesis reflect episodes of sea-level fall (Cerro del Hierro Regression) related to tectonic events and palaeoclimate. This palaeokarst can be primarily considered as the result of early Cambrian polyphase karstification in an extensional tectonic regime, later modified by Neogene–Quaternary geomorphological processes. Noble gas and CO2 isotopic signatures of the lithospheric mantle underneath Mexico and the Canary Islands: clues from mantle xenoliths and arc lavas

Studying the isotopic composition of fluids trapped in mantle xenoliths opens avenues to understand the origin and cycling of volatiles in the Earth’s upper mantle. Transmission bottlenecks and the evolution of fitness in rapidly evolving RNA viruses

We explored the evolutionary importance of two factors in the adaptation of RNA viruses to their cellular hosts, size of viral inoculum used to initiate a new infection, and mode of transmission (horizontal versus vertical). Transmission bottlenecks should occur in natural populations of viruses and their profound effects on viral adaptation have been previously documented. Ancient DNA Reveals Key Stages in the Formation of Central European Mitochondrial Genetic Diversity

The Origins of Europeans To investigate the genetic origins of modern Europeans, Brandt et al. (p. 257 ) examined ancient mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and were able to identify genetic differences in 364 Central Europeans spanning the early Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age. Observed changes in mitochondrial haplotypes corresponded with hypothesized human migration across Eurasia and revealed the complexity of the demographic changes and evidence of a Late Neolithic origin for the European mtDNA gene pool.
