Comparative analysis and antimicrobial action of some essential oils from plants
2021
In this research, essential oils (EOs) were extracted through steaming from aerial parts of three plants: basil (Ocinum basilicum L.), peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) and oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) form Sibiu County, Romania. The GC-MS analysis indicated that eugenol and apiol were the major compounds in the basil EO. Timol, ɣ-terpinene, and p-cymene were the major compounds in the volatile oil extracted from oregano and menthol and methone the main components in the peppermint EO. In the first 48 h of analysis, basil EO inhibition action was the highest against Salmonella anatum (48%), followed by Aspergillus niger (26%), Bacillus cereus (21%) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (15%); this ac…
CommercialOriganum compactumBenth. andCinnamomum zeylanicumBlume essential oils against natural mycoflora in Valencia rice
2015
Chemical composition of commercial Origanum compactum and Cinnamomum zeylanicum essential oils and the antifungal activity against pathogenic fungi isolated from Mediterranean rice grains have been investigated. Sixty-one compounds accounting for more than 99.5% of the total essential oil were identified by using gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Carvacrol (43.26%), thymol (21.64%) and their biogenetic precursors p-cymene (13.95%) and γ-terpinene (11.28%) were the main compounds in oregano essential oil, while the phenylpropanoids, eugenol (62.75%), eugenol acetate (16.36%) and (E)-cinnamyl acetate (6.65%) were found in cinnamon essential oil. Both es…
Some data on the taxonomic circumscription of S. incana and S. tragoriganum are reported. Regarding their hybrids, the new nothotaxon S. × murcica nothosubsp. mediovalentina M.B. Crespo & E. Laguna is described, and the new combinatio…
Essential oil characteristics of wild Sicilian oregano populations in relation to environmental conditions
2014
A study was carried out on the essential oil of Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum (Link) Ietswaart taken from thirteen wild populations found in different parts of Sicily, Italy. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship that exists between essentials oil extracted from Sicilian wild populations of O. vulgare ssp. hirtum (Link) Ietswaart and various weather/climate and topographic factors in order to provide more information on aspects that influence the production potential of this species. The essential oils from the samples were extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed by a combination of gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and GC-mass spectrometry (GC-MS); se…
Campioni…
Chemical composition of essential oils from Pantelleria Island autochthonous and naturalized spices and evaluation of their individual and combined a…
2019
In this study, the antimicrobial activity of the essential oils (EOs) from Origanum majorana L. and Rosmarinus officinalis L. growing in Pantelleria (Sicily, Italy) were tested alone and in combination against some prokaryotic and eukaryotic food-borne pathogens. The chemical composition of the EOs as well as the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) against the most sensitive strains were also determined. Both EOs showed interesting antimicrobial effects against all bacteria and yeasts tested. MIC was in the range 1.25–2.50 µl/ml. Interestingly, O. majorana was particularly rich in thymol acetate, while carvacrol was present at very low percentages. Also R. officinalis EOs composition wa…
Response of Origanum vulgare L. to different plant densities and first results of mechanical harvest
2003
Tests for evaluating the agronomical response of Origanum to four plant densities were carried out from 1998 to 2001, on a local biotype of Origanum collected at Monreale (Palermo), in an area having the typical soil and climatic conditions of the Sicilian environment. Data about plant biometric characteristics (height at different growth phases, number of branches per plant, fresh weight yield) and the proportions among inflorescences, leaves and stems were monitored. Moreover, essential oil analyses were carried out for each plant density. The results showed that the plant density influenced the yield but not the plant height. The best results were obtained in the second year, when the hi…
Inhibitory effects of the main compounds of oregano essential oil against some pathogenic fungi
2008
The in vitro activity of essential oil compounds of Origanum heracleoticum L. was tested against Verticillium dahliae, Fusarium oxysporum, Phoma tracheiphila, Phytophthora cactorum and Botrytis cinerea by the well diffusion method using four different concentrations (from 1 x 104 to 1 x 10-2 μg·ml-1). Analyses by GC-ITMS of the oil extracted by steam distillation from dried inflorescences made it possible to identify 19 main compounds. The major compounds were thymol (39.10 %) followed by γ-terpinene (21.26 %) and ρ-cymene (11.23 %). Carvacrol and the plain essential oil at their higher concentrations showed an inhibitory effect against all pathogens tested. However, the percentage of inhib…
