Rigidity of quasisymmetric mappings on self-affine carpets

We show that the class of quasisymmetric maps between horizontal self-affine carpets is rigid. Such maps can only exist when the dimensions of the carpets coincide, and in this case, the quasisymmetric maps are quasi-Lipschitz. We also show that horizontal self-affine carpets are minimal for the conformal Assouad dimension.

Evolution Characteristics of Delamination Damage in CFRP Composites Under Transverse Loading

The initiation and subsequent progression of delamination in CFRP composite laminates is examined using finite element method. A 12-ply CFRP composite, with a total thickness of 2.4 mm and anti-symmetric ply sequence is simulated under three-point bend test setup. Each unidirectional composite lamina is treated as an equivalent elastic and orthotropic panel. Interface behavior is defined using cohesive damage model. Complementary three-point bend test on the specimen is performed at crosshead speed of 2 mm/min. The measured load–deflection response at mid-span location compares well with predicted values. Rigidity transition in two-dimensional random fiber networks

Rigidity percolation is analyzed in two-dimensional random fibrous networks. The model consists of central forces between the adjacent crossing points of the fibers. Two strategies are used to incorporate rigidity: adding extra constraints between second-nearest crossing points with a probability p(sn), and "welding" individual crossing points by adding there four additional constraints with a probability p(weld), and thus fixing the angles between the fibers. Rigidity of random networks of stiff fibers in the low-density limit.

Rigidity percolation is analyzed in two-dimensional random networks of stiff fibers. As fibers are randomly added to the system there exists a density threshold ${q=q}_{\mathrm{min}}$ above which a rigid stress-bearing percolation cluster appears. This threshold is found to be above the connectivity percolation threshold ${q=q}_{c}$ such that ${q}_{\mathrm{min}}=(1.1698\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.0004)q}_{c}.$ The transition is found to be continuous, and in the universality class of the two-dimensional central-force rigidity percolation on lattices. Dynamic analysis for axially moving viscoelastic panels

In this study, stability and dynamic behaviour of axially moving viscoelastic panels are investigated with the help of the classical modal analysis. We use the flat panel theory combined with the Kelvin–Voigt viscoelastic constitutive model, and we include the material derivative in the viscoelastic relations. Complex eigenvalues for the moving viscoelastic panel are studied with respect to the panel velocity, and the corresponding eigenfunctions are found using central finite differences. Mechanical and thermal behaviour of networks with “flexible” and “rigid” chains

“Rigid-rod” telechelics were synthesized via repetitive Diels-Alder reaction of biscyclohexadienes and bis(1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-diones). The bistriazolinediones were used in slight excess. The rigidity of the building blocks and the molecular weight were varied. Various amounts of these reactive telechelics are used to crosslink cis-1,4-polybutadiene. The mechanical and the thermal properties of these two-component networks were investigated by stress-strain, differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic-mechanical measurements. The occurrence of microphase separation between the “rigid” and the “flexible” components is discussed to explain the properties of these materials.

Targeted steel frames by means of innovative moment resisting connections

Abstract The present paper proposes the use of stepped cross section devices on steel frames aiming at reproducing a pre-established target push-over curve. To this aim a Limited Resistance Plastic Device (LRPD) to be inserted along selected structural members is proposed. Fairness Considerations in Labor Union Wage Setting : A Theoretical Analysis

We consider a theoretical model in which unions not only take the outside option into account, but also base their wage-setting decisions on an internal reference, called the fairness reference. Wage and employment outcomes and the shape of the aggregate wage-setting curve depend on the weight and the size of the fairness reference relative to the outside option. If the fairness reference is relatively high compared to the outside option, higher wages and lower employment than in the standard model will prevail. Vibrations of a continuous web on elastic supports

We consider an infinite, homogenous linearly elastic beam resting on a system of linearly elastic supports, as an idealized model for a paper web in the middle of a cylinder-based dryer section. We obtain closed-form analytical expressions for the eigenfrequencies and the eigenmodes. The frequencies increase as the support rigidity is increased. Each frequency is bounded from above by the solution with absolutely rigid supports, and from below by the solution in the limit of vanishing support rigidity. Thus in a real system, the natural frequencies will be lower than predicted by commonly used models with rigid supports. peerReviewed
