Magnetic excitations of a doped two-dimensional antiferromagnet
1993
Magnetic excitations of the two-dimensional (2D) t-J model are considered in the presence of a small concentration of holes c. The spin-wave approximation used implies long-range antiferromagnetic ordering from the beginning. Migdal's theorem is shown to be valid for the model considered. The energy spectrum of the magnons is determined with the help of the one-pole approximation for the hole Green's function. If the concentration of mobile holes is larger than a critical value an additional branch of overdamped magnons arises near the \ensuremath{\Gamma} and M points of the Brillouin zone. This is connected with the generation of electron-hole pairs (the Stoner excitations) by magnons. The…
Theoretical modeling of antiferrodistortive phase transition forSrTiO3ultrathin films
2013
Combining group-theoretical analysis and first-principles density functional theory calculations, we confirm theoretically the antiferrodistortive phase transition in ultrathin SrTiO${}_{3}$ (001) TiO${}_{2}$-terminated films and compare it with a similar transition in the bulk. We demonstrate phonon softening at the $M$ point of the surface Brillouin zone and analyze the change in the calculated electronic and phonon properties upon phase transition.
Giant Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction and Room-Temperature Nanoscale Skyrmions in CoFeB/MgO Heterostructures
2021
Magnetic skyrmions in heavy metal (HM)/CoFeB/MgO structures are of particular interest for skyrmion-based magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) devices because of their reliable generation, stability and read-out through purely electrical methods. To optimize the properties, such as stability, a strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is required at room temperature. Here, using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that giant DMI can be obtained in Ir/CoFe structures with an Fe-terminated configuration. Moreover, Brillouin light scattering measurements show that indeed Ta/Ir/Co20Fe60B20/MgO thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy exhibit a large DMI value (1.13 mJ/m2), wh…

“Three-level shock” in ablation-refractory paroxysmal atrial fibrillation
1987
His-bundle ablation is a very effective method to control drug-refractory supraventricular arrhythmias. We present a 69-year-old woman with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, in whom several attempts of unipolar and bipolar His-bundle ablation were ineffective. Ultimately a stable 2/1 atrioventricular block was induced when three successive shocks of 400 W were applied. The first shock was given in that position with the largest His-potential deflection. The other two shocks were applied at catheter positions more distal and more proximal from the first one, respectively. We suppose that the initial lack of success was due to an atypical atrioventricular junction anatomy.

Origin of clay minerals in soils on pyroclastic deposits in the island of Lipari (Italy)
2005
The island of Lipari (Italy) is characterized by calc-alkaline to potassic volcanism and a Mediterranean-type climate. The mineralogical and chemical features of two different soil profiles with ages of 92,000 and 10,000–40,000 y, respectively, have been investigated. There were no Andisols, but Vitric and Vertic Cambisols have developed at both sites. Although the morphology of the soils was similar, remarkable differences in the clay mineralogy between the two sites were observed. The site with the Vitric Cambisol was associated with the weathering sequence: glass → halloysite → kaolinite or interstratified kaolinite-2:1 clay minerals. Both sites had smectite in the clay fraction and, to …
Managed ventricular pacing vs. conventional dual-chamber pacing for elective replacements: the PreFER MVP study: clinical background, rationale, and …
2008
Udgivelsesdato: 2008-Mar AIMS: Several clinical studies have shown that, in patients with intact atrioventricular (AV) conduction, unnecessary chronic right ventricular (RV) pacing can be detrimental. The managed ventricular pacing (MVP) algorithm is designed to give preference to spontaneous AV conduction, thus minimizing RV pacing. The clinical outcomes of MVP are being studied in several ongoing trials in patients undergoing a first device implantation, but it is unknown to what extent MVP is beneficial in patients with a history of ventricular pacing. The purpose of the Prefer for Elective Replacement MVP (PreFER MVP) study is to assess the superiority of the MVP algorithm to convention…
The Endocannabinoid System Promotes Astroglial Differentiation by Acting on Neural Progenitor Cells
2006
Endocannabinoids exert an important neuromodulatory role via presynaptic cannabinoid CB1receptors and may also participate in the control of neural cell death and survival. The function of the endocannabinoid system has been extensively studied in differentiated neurons, but its potential role in neural progenitor cells remains to be elucidated. Here we show that the CB1receptor and the endocannabinoid-inactivating enzyme fatty acid amide hydrolase are expressed, bothin vitroandin vivo, in postnatal radial glia (RC2+cells) and in adult nestin type I (nestin+GFAP+) neural progenitor cells. Cell culture experiments show that CB1receptor activation increases progenitor proliferation and differ…
