Partial Discharge Measurements under DC Voltages Containing Harmonics Produced by Power Electronic Devices
2018
Partial Discharge (PD) monitoring is one of the main diagnostic instrument to evaluate the reliability of modern electrical transmission and distribution systems. The widespread use of High voltage dc (HVDC) connections increase the demand of voltage source converters (VSCs) which, as a consequence, has brought about new challenges in the field of partial discharge measurements. In fact, the output voltage waveforms generated by AC/DC modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are affected by a significant harmonic content which influences the Partial Discharges (PDs) activity. For this reason, previous research mainly investigated the PD phenomenon on the AC side of the converter. The aim of the…
Structure of lateral heterogeneities in a coarse-grained model for multicomponent membranes
2019
We study the lateral domain structure in a coarse-grained molecular model for multicomponent lipid bilayers by semi-grandcanonical Monte Carlo simulations. The membranes are filled with liquid ordered (lo) domains surrounded by a liquid disordered (ld) matrix. Depending on the membrane composition and temperature, we identify different morphological regimes: one regime (I) where the lo domains are small and relatively compact, and two regimes (II, II') where they are larger and often interconnected. In the latter two regimes, the ld matrix forms a network of disordered trenches separating the lo domains, with a relatively high content of interdigitated line defects. Since such defects are a…
Phase diagram of a mixed polymer brush
2001
We investigate the structure and phase behavior of a two-component (binary) polymer brush in a solvent within self-consistent field theory as a function of the chains' stretching, the composition, and the incompatibility. Grafting the chains irreversibly prevents macrophase separation and the chains assemble into three-dimensional structures with lateral periodicity. At small incompatibilities a "ripple" phase is formed where different species aggregate into an array of parallel cylinders. At larger incompatibilities or asymmetric composition two "dimple" phases become stable, where different species form clusters which arrange on a quadratic (checkerboard structure) or hexagonal lattice.
FLUCTUATIONS IN LIPID BILAYERS: ARE THEY UNDERSTOOD?
2013
We review recent computer simulation studies of undulating lipid bilayers. Theoretical interpretations of such fluctuating membranes are most commonly based on generalized Helfrich-type elastic models, with additional contributions of local "protrusions" and/or density fluctuations. Such models provide an excellent basis for describing the fluctuations of tensionless bilayers in the fluid phase at a quantitative level. However, this description is found to fail for membranes in the gel phase and for membranes subject to high tensions. The fluctuations of tilted gel membranes show a signature of the modulated ripple structure, which is a nearby phase observed in the pretransition regime betw…
Design of Zero-Ripple-Current Coupled Inductors With PWM Signals in Continuous Conduction Mode
2021
Coupled inductors are widely used in multiple outputs and interleaved dc–dc converters. Also filters often use coupled inductors as their inductive part. A generalized design procedure is proposed in this article focused on current ripple minimization and applicable to coupled inductors exposed to pulsewidth modulation signals and in continuous conduction mode. The design provides a very large inductance for all windings but one. Compared to other designs, it adapts to the existing magnetic properties of the magnetic device changing only the inductance ratio, simplifying the design and manufacturing process. It is based on the equivalent inductance value and its divergences. The only assump…
Gaussian pulse propagation in dispersion-managed systems using chirped fiber gratings with group delay ripples
2005
We study the propagation of Gaussian-shaped pulses in grating-compensated dispersion-managed systems with group delay ripples (GDR). We show that the intersymbol interference caused by the GDR in gratings can be substantially reduced by nonlinear optical loop mirrors and the 40-Gb/s system performance can achieve transoceanic transmission in the presence of amplifier noise and random variations in ripple period of the gratings along the transmission line.
An Influence of Permanent Magnet Shape on the Torque Ripple of Disc-Type Brushless DC Motors
2006
An analysis of the torque developed by two types of the disc-type permanent magnet (PM), brushless DC motors: slotted torus motor and motor with stator salient poles is presented. The calculations were performed using three-dimensional finite element method (FEM). Two shapes of PMs are analyzed: trapezoidal and rectangular. The results show that application of rectangular shaped PMs provides significant reduction of the torque ripple in both considered motors.
Vesiculated tuffs and associated features
1974
Vesiculated tuffs are tuffs that contain vesicles between the ash particles. Formation of the vesicles is the result of trapping of steam, the transporting agent of volcanic base surges, in wet, muddy or sticky ash deposited by the base surges. Vesiculated tuffs are described from various maars and tuff-rings in Europe (Iceland, France, Germany) and USA together with associated surface features such as: gravity flowage ripples, mud flow channels, current ripples, and current ridges. Other features described are: plastering of ash against obstacles and vesiculated accretionary lapilli, the latter containing vesicles in the outer layer. Vesiculated base surge deposits probably contained as mu…
Analysis of Stray Flux Spectral Components in Induction Machines under Rotor Bar Breakages at Various Locations
2018
Induction machines under rotor electrical faults have been subjected to intensive research over the years. It is not only the nature of the fault that makes it important to study, but also the differences observed regarding this fault's effect on the motor's conditions. One of these conditions is the rotor bar breakages at non adjacent positions, which has drawn the attention of researchers due to the false negative diagnostic alarms that may be caused. In this paper, a novel approach is presented aiming to reliably detect this type of fault condition. The proposed method is based on the analysis of specific subcomponents of the stray flux over time. The analysis is implemented on an indust…
The role of the effect of manufacturing tolerances on a tubular linear ferrite motor
2015
Electric machines are often designed without considering workmanship and materials tolerances. Their manufacturing process involves a series of steps, starting with raw materials and ending with the machine assembly. In each of these steps occur deviations due, for instance, to mistakes in positioning tools or to the tolerances in the electrical and magnetic characteristics of the materials. These deviations may cause unwanted parasitic effects such as torque ripple, losses or acoustic noise. Such effects have to be considered especially in machines used in industrial drives for high performance applications. Moreover the tolerances in the magnetic materials have a considerable effect on th…
