Retinal vascular occlusion and deficiencies in the protein C pathway.

1999

Abstract PURPOSE: To report abnormalities in the protein C pathway and other vascular occlusion risk factors in patients with retinal vascular occlusion. METHODS: In a study, we investigated 76 consecutive patients who had in-patient evaluation of venous or arterial retinal vascular occlusion. All patients underwent comprehensive tests for coagulation disorders including determinations of protein C, protein S, lupus anticoagulants, and resistance to activated protein C and were screened for vascular disease risk factors. Resistance to activated protein C was confirmed by a polymerase chain reaction method to detect the specific factor V R506Q mutation. For comparative purposes, we also scre…

Risk factors related to oral candidiasis in patients with primary Sjögren’s syndrome

2020

Background Candidiasis is the most frequent mycotic infection of the oral cavity. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of clinical oral candidiasis and Candida albicans yeast in a population diagnosed of primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS) and to study the possible factors associated with this infection. Material and Methods An observational cross-sectional study was conducted in 61 pSS patients (60 women, 1 man, mean age 57.64±13.52) where patient based information (demographic and medical, tobacco and alcohol consumption history), intraoral parameters (presence of dentures, clinical signs of candidiasis), salivary analytical information (number of Candida albicans as colony-…

Molecular detection of Helicobacter pylori in oral samples from patients suffering digestive pathologies

2010

Objective: to determine the simultaneous presence of H. pylori in both the oral cavity and gastric mucosal in patients suffering digestive pathologies and to establish the possible association between the presence of H. pylori in the oral cavity and the gingivoperiodontal pathology. Study design: Patients with gastric symptoms (case group) and asymptomatic patients (control group) seen at the Gastroenterology Department of Dr. Julio C. Perrando Hospital (Resistencia, Argentina) were selected. Dental plaque and saliva samples from both groups were obtained. In the case group, gastric biopsy samples were also taken. H. pylori was detected in gastric biopsies by histological stains, and Polyme…

Retrospective analysis of management of ingested foreign bodies and food impactions in emergency endoscopic setting in adults.

2016

Background: Ingestion of foreign bodies and food impaction represent the second most common endoscopic emergency after bleeding. The aim of this paper is to report the management and the outcomes in 67 patients admitted for suspected ingestion of foreign body between December 2012 and December 2014. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at Palermo University Hospitals, Italy, over a 2-year period. We reviewed patients’ database (age, sex, type of foreign body and its anatomical location, treatments, and outcomes as complications, success rates, and mortalities). Results: Foreign bodies were found in all of our 67 patients. Almost all were found in the stomach and lower esophagus (…

Pretherapeutic MRI for decision-making regarding selective neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy for rectal carcinoma: interim analysis of a multicentric pro…

2012

Purpose: To study the accuracy of different cutoffs for an involved circumferential resection margin (CRM) compared with T and N categories measured by MRI as basis for selective application of neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy (nRCT) in rectal carcinoma. Materials and Methods: In a prospective multicenter observational study involving 153 primarily operated patients, the preoperative results of MRI with pathohistological findings of resected specimens were compared. Results: For a cutoff of ≤1 mm for involvement of the CRM, the accuracy of preoperative MRI was 90.9% (139/153). The negative predictive value was 98.5% (134/136). The four participating departments did not differ significantly. Fo…

High Proportions of People With Nonceliac Wheat Sensitivity Have Autoimmune Disease or Antinuclear Antibodies.

2015

BACKGROUND & AIMS: There is much interest in wheat sensitivity among people without celiac disease (CD), but little is known about any risks associated with the condition. We evaluated the prevalence of autoimmune diseases (ADs) among patients with nonceliac wheat sensitivity (NCWS), and investigated whether they carry antinuclear antibodies (ANA). METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of 131 patients diagnosed with NCWS (121 female; mean age, 29.1 years) at 2 hospitals in Italy from January 2001 through June 2011. Data were also collected from 151 patients with CD or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) (controls). Patient medical records were reviewed to identify those with ADs. We al…

Impact of lifestyle on metabolic syndrome in apparently healthy people.

2014

Parallel to the increase in obesity, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) is continually increasing, with increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular atherosclerosis diseases. Despite the importance of this public health problem, the relative impact of diet and physical activity on MetS prevalence has yet to be established. We investigated the association between lifestyle, in terms of both habitual dietary pattern and physical activity, and MetS in a cohort of adults without known diabetes and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Four hundred seventy-seven randomly selected adult participants were cross-sectionally investigated. Each participant answered a food frequency questi…
