Market Risk Disclosure in Banks’ Balance Sheet and Pillar 3 Report: the Case of Italian Banks

2018

The aim of this chapter is to investigate market risk disclosure in banking. The author employs content analysis to conduct an empirical study on a sample of the ten largest Italian banks. The study provides evidence that banks differ in their market risk reporting, even though they are subject to similar regulatory requirements and accounting standards. It also shows that there is room to improve various aspects of risk disclosure, and provides some useful insights for further research. The structure of this chapter is as follows. Section 1 introduces market risk disclosure in banking. Section 2 provides the theoretical foundations of risk disclosure. Section 3 analyses the specific nature…

I processi di standardizzazione della funzione creditizia degli intermediari bancari: aspetti istituzionali, organizzativi e finanziari

2012

This paper aims to point out how standardization and financial innovation are putting under pressure the traditional economics of banking. It is argued that the progressive standardization and information technology innovation, with special reference to internal rating systems, risk management techniques, and regulatory constraints, have been leading bank lending toward new business models. The increasing role of internal ratings, credit scorings, and hard information in the banking intermediation process have enlarged the organizational and strategic differences between transaction-based banking and relationship-based banking. The structure of this paper is as follows. Section 1 outlines t…

The Uncertain Role of Banks’ Corporate Governance in Systemic Risk Regulation

2011

This paper examines how corporate governance reform of banks relates to systemic risk. Although there has been substantial emphasis on the importance of corporate governance of banks, it is not entirely clear how this enterprise relates to the goal of financial stability. The first part of the paper differentiates between kinds of risk that arise from the structure of the firm, such as shareholder ownership, limited liability and the separation between control and ownership, and kinds of risk that arise from interactions at the systemic level. It highlights why the risk-taking of banks presents, in many respects, a special case not only because of the structure of their business but also becau…

Phylogenetic analysis in the clinical risk management of an outbreak of hepatitis C virus infection among transfused thalassaemia patients in Italy

2021

Background: Occurrence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is reduced by effective risk management procedures, but patient-to-patient transmission continues to be reported in healthcare settings. Aim: To report the use of phylogenetic analysis in the clinical risk management of an HCV outbreak among 128 thalassaemia outpatients followed at a thalassaemia centre of an Italian hospital. Methods: Epidemiological investigation and root-cause analysis were performed. All patients with acute hepatitis and known chronic infection were tested for HCV RNA, HCV genotyping, and NS3, NS5A, and NS5B HCV genomic region sequencing. To identify transmission clusters, phylogenetic trees were built for each…
