A high-precision Ferrite-induction beam-current monitoring system

1975

Abstract The construction and performance of a Ferrite-induction current monitoring system for charged-particle beams with pulse lengths less than 3 μs and pulse repetition rates up to 1 kHz is described. An absolute accuracy of better than 0.2% has been achieved for average currents between 0.01 and 30 μA and a pulse repetition rate of 100 Hz. Particular emphasis has been placed on a detailed analysis of the design parameters, which limit the ultimate accuracy of the current monitoring system.

A multicriterion design of steel frames with shakedown constraints

2006

The minimum volume design of elastic perfectly plastic steel frames subjected to fixed and cyclic loads is searched in such a way that the structure remains in elastic field in serviceability conditions, while it is subjected to alternating plasticity under very strong cyclic actions, incremental and instantaneous collapse being prevented. The problem is faced on the grounds of a statical and a kinematical approach. The Kuhn-Tucker conditions of the two problems prove that they are each one the dual of the other and provide useful pieces of information about the structural behaviour. Numerical applications confirm the theoretical expectations: optimal designs turn out to be quite light, wit…

Multiple-criteria cash-management policies with particular liquidity terms

2019

Abstract Eliciting policies for cash management systems with multiple assets is by no means straightforward. Both the particular relationship between alternative assets and time delays from control decisions to availability of cash introduce additional difficulties. Here we propose a cash management model to derive short-term finance policies when considering multiple assets with different expected returns and particular liquidity terms for each alternative asset. In order to deal with the inherent uncertainty about the near future introduced by cash flows, we use forecasts as a key input to the model. We express uncertainty as lack of predictive accuracy and we derive a deterministic equiv…

Does optimal partitioning of color space account for universal color categorization?

2017

A 2007 study by Regier, Kay, and Khetarpal purports to show that universal categories emerge as a result of optimal partitioning of color space. Regier, Kay, and Khetarpal only consider color categorizations of up to six categories. However, in most industrialized societies eleven color categories are observed. This paper shows that when applied to the case of eleven categories, Regier, Kay, and Khetarpal's optimality criterion yields unsatisfactory results. Applications of the criterion to the intermediate cases of seven, eight, nine, and ten color categories are also briefly considered and are shown to yield mixed results. We consider a number of possible explanations of the failure of th…

Multicriteria Decision Analysis for Choosing the Remediation Method for a Landfill Based on Mixed Ordinal and Cardinal Information

2009

We describe a real-life application of a multicriteria method in the context of remediating a landfill in Finland. The landfill was used for dumping industrial waste during the years 1950 to 1965. During that time many harmful chemicals were stored in landfills among other waste. Therefore, this—and possibly several other—landfills have to be remediated. In this application, seven different remediation options were evaluated based on 13 criteria. For some criteria, cardinal measures with associated uncertainties were obtained. For other criteria, only ordinal (ranking) information was available. The problem was analyzed using the Stochastic Multicriteria Acceptability Analysis with Ordinal …

Activation of a Sweet Taste Receptor by Oleanane-Type Glycosides from Wisteria sinensis

2022

The phytochemical study of Wisteria sinensis (Sims) DC. (Fabaceae), commonly known as the Chinese Wisteria, led to the isolation of seven oleanane-type glycosides from an aqueous-ethanolic extract of the roots. After successive purifications by various chromatographic methods, like solid/liquid chromatographic methods, vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC), medium pressure liquid chromatography (MPLC), on normal and reverse phase (RP-18 silica gel), and size exclusion chromatography on Sephadex L, their structures were elucidated by an extensive 600 MHz NMR analysis including 1D and 2D NMR experiments as well as ESI-MS. Among the seven isolated saponins, two have never been reported before : 3…

Identification of organic compounds in fictile unguentaria from two Sicilian necropolis of Greek age (5th century, b.c.) by GC-MS analysis.

2007

A study to obtain more knowledge on funeral set in Greek age, (5th Century, b.C.) was carried out on thirteen ancient unguentaria, small vessels used as containers of balms or ointments, founded in two different Sicilian necropolis: Adranon and Hymera. Every find was subjected to three extractions by increasing polarity solvents. All crude extracts, unsaponifiables and methyl esters of saponifiable fraction were analysed by GC-MS. Analysis showed difference between two groups of finds: the unguentaria from Adranon show abundant traces of lipids used in balm making, while those from Hymera resulted empty and buried for ritual purpose. Even if in the two towns, flourished in the same period, …

When is Green Really Green? A Latvian Case Study on Updating of Food Supply Green Public Procurement

2020

Abstract Green public procurement (GPP) is an important tool and is used to reduce adverse environmental impacts caused by food production. To have a more detailed look at the application of GPP in Latvia, the authors screened 97 public tenders for supply of food products, documenting the choice of the green criteria. Only 15 % of the screened tender documents corresponded to the national GPP requirements. Only 4 % of the tender documents gave higher priority exclusively for organic products compared to products within national quality schemes or integrated pest management agriculture. The authors compared these findings with the opinions of environmental experts, GPP guidelines by the Euro…

Gas chromatographic evaluation of pesticide residue contents in nectarines after non-toxic washing treatments

2004

Washing with aqueous solutions of citric acid, ethanol, glycerol, hydrogen peroxide, potassium permanganate, sodium metabisulfite, sodium laurylsulfate (SLS), sodium hypochlorite, and urea is evaluated for pesticide residue reduction in nectarines and compared with simple tap water washing. Residues of pesticides commonly utilized in nectarines (chlorpyrifos, fenarimol, iprodione, malathion, methidathion, myclobutanil, parathion and pirimicarb) are extracted with ethyl acetate and anhydrous sodium sulfate, extract is concentred and analyzed by GC with nitrogen-phosphorus detection. The formation of possible toxic by-products (chlorpyrifos oxon, malaoxon, methidaoxon and paraoxon methyl) is …

Influence of clinical and psychological variables upon the oral health-related quality of life in patients with temporomandibular disorders

2017

Background To analyze the association between the OHIP-14 and the different subtypes making up the clinical and psychological axis obtained using the RDC/TMD. Material and Methods 407 patients treated at the TMD unit of the Andalusian Healthcare Service were administered the Spanish version of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders questionnaire (RDC/TMD), together with the Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire (OHIP-14). The degree of association between the patients’ score in the OHIP-14 and the clinical and biopsychosocial variables was analyzed through bivariate and multivariate analyses, specifically through linear regression. Results 89.4% of the treated p…
