Geochemistry, zircon U–Pb ages and Lu–Hf isotopes of early Paleozoic plutons in the northwestern Chinese Tianshan: Petrogenesis and geological implic…

2013

Abstract The northwestern Chinese Tianshan is a key part of the southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Voluminous arc-related igneous rocks in this region have recorded the opening and closure of several oceanic basins that may represent southern branches of the Paleo-Asian Ocean. We have conducted geochemical, geochronological and Hf-in-zircon isotopic studies on mafic and felsic intrusive rocks in the northwestern Chinese Tianshan to provide important clues for the evolution of the Junggar Ocean and to understand the early Paleozoic crustal growth in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. The mafic plutons are composed of metagabbro (453.8 ± 2.0 Ma) and fine-grained diorite (461.1 ± 2.0 Ma). The…

Geochemistry and P–T–t evolution of the Abu-Barqa Metamorphic Suite, SW Jordan, and implications for the tectonics of the northern Arabian–Nubian Shi…

2013

Abstract The Abu Barqa Metamorphic Suite (ABMS) represents the oldest part of the Arabian–Nubian Shield in southern Jordan. It comprises tonalitic gneiss, metasediments including schist and paragneiss, and granitic gneiss, intruded by later granitic bodies. Geochemically, the majority of the schist samples have shale and Fe-shale protoliths, while the paragneisses represent metagreywacke. Tectonic discrimination diagrams indicate that the protolith of the ABMS was deposited at an active continental margin/island arc setting. U–Pb zircon (SIMS) ages from metamorphic and igneous rocks of the ABMS indicate that it evolved between ∼800 and ∼610 Ma. A tonalitic gneiss has a crystallization age o…

Intraflagellar transport molecules in ciliary and nonciliary cells of the retina.

2010

IFT proteins are differentially localized in photoreceptor cilia, including within the inner segment, and some are shown to function in trafficking in nonciliated retinal neurons.

Raman spectroscopy of synthetic, geological and biological vaterite: a Raman spectroscopic study

2009

Raman spectroscopy was used to study vaterite samples of biological, geological and synthetic origin. The Raman band positions and the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the lattice modes and the internal modes of the carbonate ion of all specimens show no significant differences between vaterites of different origin. With increasing Mg concentrations, synthetic vaterite samples show increasing FWHM in the region of the lattice modes and the three ν1 bands, whereas no change in luminescence was detected. In contrast, in situ measurements of vaterite areas in freshwater cultured pearls (FWCPs) by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) together with the Rama…

In-situ high-pressure x-ray diffraction study of zinc ferrite nanoparticles

2016

We have studied the high-pressure structural behavior of zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) nanoparticles by powder X-ray diffraction measurements up to 47 GPa. We found that the cubic spinel structure of ZnFe2O4 remains up to 33 GPa and a phase transition is induced beyond this pressure. The high-pressure phase is indexed to an orthorhombic CaMn2O4-type structure. Upon decompression the low- and high-pressure phases coexist. The compressibility of both structures was also investigated. We have observed that the lattice parameters of the high-pressure phase behave anisotropically upon compression. Further, we predict possible phase transition around 55 GPa. For comparison, we also studied the compressi…

‘In situ’ preparation of nitrous acid solutions by photoreduction in a flow assembly for analysis of pharmaceuticals

2003

The solutions of nitrite ion, or nitrous acid, are frequently used as reagent in different analytical procedures and in pharmaceutical analysis. The low stability of the aqueous solutions of this reagent implies the tedious work of freshly prepared solutions every day and being kept in the refrigerator. In this paper, a photoreactor formed by a low pressure mercury lamp and nesting in a continuous-flow manifold is studied, tested, and proposed for the in situ reduction of nitrate solution into nitrite. The conversion into nitrite is reproducible and it has been successfully applied to determination of different drugs, mostly from the sulphonamide family, in an FIA assembly.

Brancati su Pirandello e il pirandellismo

2019

In the short novel "Sogno di un valzer" published on "Quadrivio" from 5 June to 14 August 1938 Vitaliano Brancati enacts between observation of places and survey of customs a world beyond measure constantly hovering between reality and dream. In Caltanissetta (Nissa) the city in which the writer is the magistral institute turned his back on fascist Rome he came to teach unobtrusive insignificant characters who nevertheless covet desires racking their brains in metaphysical questions. Thus the leitmotiv of the critics of pirandellism takes shape which often with subtle irony emerges in the Brancatian writings. The essay shows how it intertwines with the sulphurous comedy of the writer of Don Giovanni in Sicilia who tracing a particular topography of the island supported by inner relief leads his analysis of eccentric behaviors and of the aberrations of the mind in which the trivialized Pirandellian thought ends to become an explosive element.

Under the umbrella

2017

The inclusion of Internet Gaming Disorder as a preliminary diagnosis subsumed in Section III of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) has provoked mixed reactions. On the one hand, it has been appreciated as an important sign stressing the negative health-related impact of that disorder. Likewise, the definition of diagnostic criteria helps scientists and clinicians to refer to mandatory indicators associated with a health problem. On the other hand, it has been objected that this new diagnosis bears the danger of pathologizing normal behaviors that are a feature of healthy recreational activity for many people. However, the existence of diag…

Mafic alkaline metasomatism in the lithosphere underneath East Serbia: evidence from the study of xenoliths and the host alkali basalts

2010

Effects of mafic alkaline metasomatism have been investigated by a combined study of the East Serbian mantle xenoliths and their host alkaline rocks. Fertile xenoliths and tiny mineral assemblages found in depleted xenoliths have been investigated. Fertile lithologies are represented by clinopyroxene (cpx)-rich lherzolite and spinel (sp)-rich olivine websterite containing Ti-Alrich Cr-augite, Fe-rich olivine, Fe-Al-rich orthopyroxene and Al-rich spinel. Depleted xenoliths, which are the predominant lithology in the suite of East Serbian xenoliths, are harzburgite, cpxpoor lherzolite and rare Mg-rich dunite. They contain small-scale assemblages occurring as pocket-like, symplectitic or irreg…
