Nerve Growth Factor (NGF)-induced neuronal differentiation requires the activation of members of the Rho family of small GTPases. However, the molecular mechanisms through which NGF regulates cytoskeletal changes and neurite outgrowth are not totally understood. In this work, we identify the Rac1-specific guanine exchange factor (GEF) Tiam1 as a novel mediator of NGF/TrkA-dependent neurite elongation. In particular, we report that knockdown of Tiam1 causes a significant reduction in Rac1 activity and neurite outgrowth induced by NGF. Nitrate is a natural constituent of the human diet and an approved food additive. It can be partially converted to nitrogen monoxide, which induces vasodilation and thereby decreases blood pressure. This effect is associated with a reduced risk regarding cardiovascular disease, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Moreover, dietary nitrate has been associated with beneficial effects in patients with gastric ulcer, renal failure, or metabolic syndrome. First Evidence of Contourite Drifts in the North-Western Sicilian Active Continental Margin (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea)

We present the results of an integrated geomorphological and seismo-stratigraphic study based on high resolution marine data acquired in the north-western Sicilian continental margin. We document for the first time five contourite drifts (marked as EM1a, EM2b, EM2, EM3a, and EM3b), located in the continental slope at depths between ca. 400 and 1500 m. EM1a,b have been interpreted as elongated mounded drifts. EM1a,b are ca. 3 km long, 1.3 km wide, and have a maximum thickness of 36 m in their center that thins northwards, while EM1b is smaller with a thickness up to 24 m. Tutkimus käsittelee yhteisöstä erottamisen ja siihen takaisinliittymisen mahdollisuuksia rikostaustaisten naisten elämässä. Tutkimuksen kohteena ovat rikostaustaisten naisten kertomukset elämänkulustaan. Tutkimuksessa analysoidaan naisten kertomuksia siirtymäriittiteorian eli yhteisöstä erottamisen, liminaalin ja takaisinliittämisen näkökulmasta. Aineisto on kerätty haastattelemalla 18 naista, jotka haastatteluhetkellä olivat joko suorittamassa vankeusrangaistustaan, ehdonalaisen vapauden valvonnassa tai rangaistuksensa suorittaneet. Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan suistamolaiselta itkijältä Matjoi Plattoselta vuosina 1908−1920 tallennettuja kuolinrituaalien kuvauksia ja niihin liittyviä itkuvirsiä siirtymäriittiteorian avulla. Tutkimuksen aineiston Plattosen kanssa ovat tuottaneet Matti Kaisla, U. T. Sirelius ja A. O. Väisänen. Tutkimuksessa kiinnitetään huomiota erityisesti rituaalisen itkemisen merkitykseen kuolinrituaalien osana.
