The flood of the Turia River of 1731. An approximation to the literature of the catastrophe

2015

Efficient unsupervised clustering for spatial bird population analysis along the Loire river

2015

International audience; This paper focuses on application and comparison of Non Linear Dimensionality Reduction (NLDR) methods on natural high dimensional bird communities dataset along the Loire River (France). In this context, biologists usually use the well-known PCA in order to explain the upstream-downstream gradient.Unfortunately this method was unsuccessful on this kind of nonlinear dataset. The goal of this paper is to compare recent NLDR methods coupled with different data transformations in order to find out the best approach. Results show that Multiscale Jensen-Shannon Embedding (Ms JSE) outperform all over methods in this context.

Wolbachia prevalence and diversity in selected riverine predatory beetles (Bembidiini and Paederini)

2018

Despite the many studies on Wolbachia in Coleoptera, data about the prevalence of this bacterium among ground and rove beetles are missing. This study describes Wolbachia distribution and diversity in predatory beetles co-habiting the same environment - submontane river channels. Three species of Paederini (Staphylinidae) and four Bembidiini (Carabidae) were collected from six river catchments of the Carpathians. Wolbachia was absent in three species: Paederidus rubrothoracicus (Goeze), Bembidion decorum (Zenker in Panzer), Bembidion modestum (F.) - but detected in four others. Paederus limnophilus Erichson and Paederidus ruficollis F. were infected at only some sites by different strains o…

Analysis and Evaluation of Adaptive RSSI-based Ranging in Outdoor Wireless Sensor Networks

2019

Estimating inter-node distances based on received radio signal strength (RSSI) is the foundation of RSSI-based outdoor localization in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). However, the accuracy of RSSI-based ranging depends on environmental and weather conditions. Therefore, it is important that RSSI-based ranging adapts to prevailing conditions to improve its range and location accuracy. This paper analyzes and evaluates RSSI-based ranging and adaptive techniques in outdoor WSNs to improve the range quality. The findings highlight the effects of path loss exponent (PLE) estimation error and temperature change on RSSI-based ranging. Consequently, we analyze techniques for mitigating these detri…

An Embedded Real-Time Automatic Lane-Keeping System

2007

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are safety systems capable of identifying an unavoidable dangerous scenario and reacting coherently. An automatic lane-keeping system is designed to prevent dangerous events when the driver left inadvertently his/her own lane. In this paper a real-time automatic lane-keeping system is proposed. The main features of the system are the lane markers location process as well as the generation of the vehicle's steering angle. The system has been prototyped using the Celoxica RC203 board, equipped with a Xilinx Virtex II FPGA, for real-time processing of real motorway scenes coming from a CCD camera on a moving vehicle. The required processing time is 25,…

Managing sensor data streams in a smart home application

2020

A challenge in developing an ambient activity recognition system for use in elder care is finding a balance between the sophistication of the system and a cost structure that fits within the budgets of public and private sector healthcare organisations. Much activity recognition research in the context of elder care is based on dense networks of sensors and advanced methods, such as supervised machine learning algorithms. This paper presents the data processing aspects of an activity recognition system based on a simpler, knowledge-based unsupervised approach, designed for a sparse network of sensors. By structuring sensor data management as a streaming system, we provide a simple programmi…

Wild brown trout affected by historical mining in the Cévennes national park, France.

2011

8 pages; International audience; In the protected area of the Cévennes National Park (Southern France), 114 wild brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) were captured at six locations affected to different extents by historical mining and metallurgy dating from the Iron Age to Modern Times. Cadmium and lead in trout livers and muscles reflect high sediment contamination, although an age-related effect was also detected for hepatic metal concentrations. Lead isotope signatures confirm exposure to drainage from mining and metallurgical waste. Developmental instability, assessed by fluctuating asymmetry, is significantly correlated with cadmium and lead concentrations in trout tissues, suggesting th…

Effect of river restoration on life-history strategies in fish communities

2019

Assessments of river restoration outcomes are mostly based on taxonomic identities of species, which may not be optimal because a direct relationship to river functions remains obscure and results are hardly comparable across biogeographic borders. The use of ecological species trait information instead of taxonomic units may help to overcome these challenges. Abundance data for fish communities were gathered from 134 river restoration projects conducted in Switzerland, Germany and Finland, monitored for up to 15 years. These data were related to a dataset of 22 categories of ecological traits describing fish life-history strategies to assess the outcome of the restoration projects. Restora…

Constantine X Doukas (1059–1067) versus Uzes – about the Nomads on Boats on the Danube in 1064

2021

The reign of the Doukas dynasty in 1059–1078 was a time when new threats to the Byzantine Empire emerge in Europe and Asia. One of them was the increased activity of Turkmen who were penetrating the lands belonging to the Byzantines. A manifestation of these threats was visible during the rule of Constantine X Doukas (1059–1067) in 1064. We have there an invasion of the tribe of Uzes, who crossed the Danube. They ventured so far, as the vicinity of Thessalonica and the province of Hellas, plundering everything in their path. Their actions surprised the defense of the Byzantines. This attack on the empire was related to their crossing of the Danube, about which Michael Attaliates and Skylitz…

Structure and Sensory Analyses of Tainting Substances in Finnish Freshwater Environments

1988

GC/MS/SNIFF/TASTE methods have been used in Finland to identify the causes of three tainting problems in water and one in fish nets. Structure determination was often verified by comparison with authentic compounds. Algal growth was implicated to be the source of geosmin and MIB in river water in Northern Finland and was associated with the appearance of tainting problems in raw water and reservoir water in Åland county. Terpenoids (e.g. camphor), degradation products of natural lipids (e.g. aldehydes, ketones and unsaturated aliphatic compounds) and volatile organohalogen compounds were frequently found in contaminated water but showed minor tainting effects compared to geosmin and MIB. Di…
