Size–Abundance Relationships of Freshwater Macroinvertebrates in Two Contrasting Floodplain Channels of Rhone River
2022
Body size is perhaps the most fundamental property of an organism and its relationship with abundance is one of the most studied relationships in ecology. Although numerous studies have examined these relationships in local communities, few have investigated how they vary at different temporal and spatial scales. We investigated the relationship between body size and abundance of local macroinvertebrate communities in two floodplain channels of the French upper Rhone River. The two channels differ in their vegetation coverage (high vs. low vegetation) and hydrological regimes. The shapes of the size–abundance relationship were similar between channels on a yearly basis but differed wh…

Landform classification: a high-performing mapping unit partitioning tool for landslide susceptibility assessment—a test in the Imera River basin (no…
2022
In landslide susceptibility studies, the type of mapping unit adopted affects the obtained models and maps in terms of accuracy, robustness, spatial resolution and geomorphological adequacy. To evaluate the optimal selection of these units, a test has been carried out in an important catchment of northern Sicily (the Imera River basin), where the spatial relationships between a set of predictors and an inventory of 1608 rotational/translational landslides were analysed using the multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) method. In particular, landslide susceptibility models were prepared and compared by adopting four different types of mapping units: the largely adopted grid cells (PX…

Indicators of rivers geomorphological functionality, application of the EU Water Framework Directive in Sicily (Italy)
2015
Many river systems in Europe suffer from human pressure. For this reason the European Water Framework Directive (WFD; 2000/60/EC) was created for river basin and floods management. In 2010 the Italian Environmental Minister issued the WFD and a protocol for the stream hydromorphological evaluation, analysis, and monitoring was established (IDRAIM). The Morphology Quality Index (MQI) is part of this procedure and defines the deviation of present geomorphic reach situation from reference conditions. It is composed by Indicators of Geomorphological Functionality (IGF), Indicators of Artificiality (IA) and Indicators of Channel Adjustments (ICA). The present work aims at illustrating the calcula…
Numerical experiments for defining criteria for the use of LS-PIV based techniques in river monitoring.
2019
The developing of new image-based techniques for environmental monitoring is opening new frontiers for remote streamflow measurements in natural environments, since they allow for non-intrusive measurements even in adverse circumstances, such as high flow conditions that often hinder the use of traditional approaches and instruments. Methods based on the acquisition, analysis and elaboration of images for streamflow observation, such as the large scale particle image velocimetry (LSPIV) and the particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) techniques, are rapidly evolving also in consideration of the growing availability of a new generation of optical sensors, digital cameras and methodologies. A num…
The Platani river. A possible eco-museum
2016
The territorial system of Platani has been studied, for the establishment of an eco-museum, in the undergraduate laboratory AmbienteNaturaArchitettura (Degree course in Building Engineering - Architecture, University of Palermo) producing about 20 thesis that led to as many projects, aimed at eco-sustainable valorization. The lab’s topics have resulted in conferences and good practices, including a journey (done on foot in four days by professors, experts and students), from the sources to the river mouth, which allowed us to catch continuously the landscape variations, to dwell in the emblematic points, to meet the community and administrators to engage and discuss with them about the valo…
Abitare l’inabitabile. Piccole architetture per il fiume Platani
2016
Starting from the experience of the degree thesis, the book recounts some project experiences in the places of the Platani river, revealing the complexity of the landsca…
Cities inside the City on River Amstel

Bipolar membrane reverse electrodialysis for the sustainable recovery of energy from pH gradients of industrial wastewater: Performance prediction by…
2021
Abstract The theoretical energy density extractable from acidic and alkaline solutions is higher than 20 kWh m−3 of single solution when mixing 1 M concentrated streams. Therefore, acidic and alkaline industrial wastewater have a huge potential for the recovery of energy. To this purpose, bipolar membrane reverse electrodialysis (BMRED) is an interesting, yet poorly studied technology for the conversion of the mixing entropy of solutions at different pH into electricity. Although it shows promising performance, only few works have been presented in the literature so far, and no comprehensive models have been developed yet. This work presents a mathematical multi-scale model based on a semi-…
