Time-Dependent Multiple Depot Vehicle Routing Problem on Megapolis Network under Wardrop's Traffic Flow Assignment

2018

In this work multiple depot vehicle routing problem is considered in case of variable travel times between nodes on a metropolis network. This variant of the classic multiple depot vehicle routing problem is motivated by the fact that in urban contexts variable traffic conditions play an essential role and can not be ignored in order to perform a realistic optimization. Time-travel matrices corresponding to each period of planning horizon were formed by solving the traffic assignment problem in conjunction with shortest path problem. Routing problem instances include from 20 to 100 customers randomly chosen from a road network of Saint-Petersburg. The results demonstrate that taking into ac…

Editorial: Calculation of Passenger Car Equivalents at Roundabouts

2021

Editorial on the Research Topic: Calculation of Passenger Car Equivalents at Roundabouts About this Research Topic: Calculation of Passenger Car Equivalents (PCEs) for heavy vehicles represents the starting point for the operational analysis of road facilities and other traffic management applications. PCEs are used to consider the presence of heavy vehicles in the traffic stream and are expressed as multiples of the effect of an average passenger car. Moreover, the highly curvilinear nature of the roundabout design, both in urban and rural environment, has significant effects on the paths that heavy vehicles would travel; as a consequence, the interaction between the physical and performan…

Osservazioni sulla viabilità antica nel comprensorio di Trapani

2020

This paper is aimed to analyze, in a preliminar way, the ancient road system in a selected area of the Northern Sicily, between Segesta and Trapani. The focus are the connections between main roads (the so-called via Valeria and the hypothetical pathways) and settlements, the morphological context and the most significant toponyms from the archaeological point of view. The research is carried out by the archaeological data, contemporary and historical cartography, and it is also focused on the secondary roads.

A Novel Technique for Monitoring the W-Beam Guardrails

2014

The paper addresses the problem of the measurement of guardrails’ deformations by means automatic analysis of optical images. The technique is founded on the analysis of high-resolution photos, obtained by means of 3D camera installed into a data vehicle. The novel methodology has been used to calculate the longitudinal safety barrier deformations for one W-beam guardrails installed along a rural road in Italy. The procedure has shown that digital image analysis can be used with the aim to monitoring guardrails and, therefore, for guarantee reasonable levels of protection against serious ran-off-road crashes.

Optimization of Data Harvesters Deployment in an Urban Areas for an Emergency Scenario

2013

International audience; Since its appearance in the VANETs research community, data collection where vehicles have to explore an area and collect various local data, brings various issues and challenges. Some architectures were proposed to meet data collection requirements. They can be classified into two categories: Decentralized and Centralized self-organizing where different components and techniques are used depending on the application type. In this paper, we treat time-constrained applications in the context of search and rescue missions. For this reason, we propose a centralized architecture where a central unit plans and manages a set of vehicles namely harvesters to get a clear ove…

Traffic-related pollutants in roadside soils of different countries in Europe and Asia

2015

We investigated the magnetic and chemical properties of the roadside soil samples collected from five European and Asian countries. Spots in which cars slowed down and/or accelerated due to the traffic organization (speed limits, junctions, and traffic lights) were selected for sampling. Apart from the Zabrze site (Poland), the magnetic susceptibility and heavy metal contents decreased with increasing distance from the road edge. The highest mass-specific magnetic susceptibility values (χ) were observed in the samples collected from Mumbai (India) and Zabrze (Poland). Moreover, the high contents of Fe, Ni, Mn, and Co were observed in Mumbai, whereas in Zabrze, all the examined elements demo…

Effect of deicing salts on urban soils and health status of roadside trees in the Opole region.

2004

This article reports on a study whose aim was to evaluate the impact of snow removal salts on urban soil properties and the health of roadside trees. The evaluation was done by chemical analyses of soil samples and plant matter combined with toxicity testing, performed with a Protoxkit F, a protozoan microbiotest. Samples were collected at 45 locations on three main roads in the town of Opole (Poland). The roads differed in the snow removal technology and amount of chemical substances (mostly NaCI) used on them during the winter. The study showed that when soil was exposed to a high level of NaCI, it tended to be more alkaline and also exhibited increased content of Na + and Cl - . The toxi…

Characteristics of current roadside pollution using test-monitoring plots

2014

Abstract The aim of the study was the qualitative recognition of the existing roadside pollutants deposited in topsoils located close to roads with high traffic volume. So far, the studies have helped to determine the content of pollutants that accumulated over a long period of time. Traditionally, it has been difficult to distinguish between roadside pollution and pollution from other industrial sources. In order to avoid such problems and to accurately recognize present threats originating from road traffic, test-monitoring plots were installed in Poland (Gliwice and Opole), Germany (Tubingen, Ulm and Boblingen), Finland (Helsinki), Tajikistan (Dushanbe) and China (Lanzhou). To install th…

A methodology to identify critical road sections by means of cyclist's fatigue

2020

This paper proposes a procedure for determining cyclists’ fatigue state along a specific road, as a function of some external variables related to the environmental context. When the physical fatigue reaches extreme levels, the cyclist’s ability to deal with an unexpected event or with an emergency condition is particularly limited; further, poor road pavement conditions may increase occurrence probability of critical events. In order to identify the potentially most dangerous road paths, the authors defined a methodology to build a model for cyclist’s fatigue evaluation in terms of Heart Rate class. The proposed procedure is based on the collection of simple data processed by means of Patt…
