PMT: New analytical framework for automated evaluation of geo-environmental modelling approaches

2019

Geospatial computation, data transformation to a relevant statistical software, and step-wise quantitative performance assessment can be cumbersome, especially when considering that the entire modelling procedure is repeatedly interrupted by several input/output steps, and the self-consistency and self-adaptive response to the modelled data and the features therein are lost while handling the data from different kinds of working environments. To date, an automated and a comprehensive validation system, which includes both the cutoff-dependent and –independent evaluation criteria for spatial modelling approaches, has not yet been developed for GIS based methodologies. This study, for the fir…

DOES ENVIRONMENTAL ROBUSTNESS PLAY A ROLE IN FLUCTUATING ENVIRONMENTS?

2013

Fluctuating environments are expected to select for individuals that have highest geometric fitness over the experienced environments. This leads to the prediction that genetically determined environmental robustness in fitness, and average fitness across environments should be positively genetically correlated to fitness in fluctuating environments. Because quantitative genetic experiments resolving these predictions are missing, we used a full-sib, half-sib breeding design to estimate genetic variance for egg-to-adult viability in Drosophila melanogaster exposed to two constant or fluctuating temperatures that were above the species' optimum temperature, during development. Viability in t…

Scalable and effective multi-level entangled photon states: a promising tool to boost quantum technologies

2021

Abstract Multi-level (qudit) entangled photon states are a key resource for both fundamental physics and advanced applied science, as they can significantly boost the capabilities of novel technologies such as quantum communications, cryptography, sensing, metrology, and computing. The benefits of using photons for advanced applications draw on their unique properties: photons can propagate over long distances while preserving state coherence, and they possess multiple degrees of freedom (such as time and frequency) that allow scalable access to higher dimensional state encoding, all while maintaining low platform footprint and complexity. In the context of out-of-lab use, photon generation…

An iterative method in a probabilistic approach to the spectral inverse problem - Differential emission measure from line spectra and broadband data

2010

Inverse problems are of great importance in astrophysics for deriving information about the physical characteristics of hot optically thin plasma sources from their EUV and X-ray spectra. We describe and test an iterative method developed within the framework of a probabilistic approach to the spectral inverse problem for determining the thermal structures of the emitting plasma. We also demonstrate applications of this method to both high resolution line spectra and broadband imaging data. Our so-called Bayesian iterative method (BIM) is an iterative procedure based on Bayes' theorem and is used to reconstruct differential emission measure (DEM) distributions. To demonstrate the abilities …

Robust optimal control of two-level quantum systems

2017

We investigate the time and the energy minimum optimal solutions for the robust control of two-level quantum systems against offset or control field uncertainties. Using the Pontryagin Maximum Principle, we derive the global optimal pulses for the first robustness orders. We show that the dimension of the control landscape is lower or equal to 2N for a field robust to the N th order, which leads to an estimate of its complexity.

Towards the time-optimal control of dissipative spin-1/2 particles in nuclear magnetic resonance

2011

International audience; We consider the time-optimal control of a spin 1/2 particle whose dynamics is governed by the Bloch equations with both longitudinal and transverse relaxation terms. We solve this control problem by using geometric optimal control techniques. We show the crucial role of singular extremals in the time-optimal synthesis. This role can mainly be attributed to the presence of dissipation. We also analyze the robustness of the optimal control sequence when both the maximum amplitude of the control field and the dissipative parameters are varied. Finally, we present an experimental implementation of the different solutions using techniques of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance.

Optimal adiabatic passage by shaped pulses: Efficiency and robustness

2011

We explore the efficiency and robustness of population transfer in two-state systems by adiabatic passage (i) when the driving pulse is optimally designed in order to lead to parallel adiabatic passage or (ii) with a linear chirping. We show how one could practically implement the corresponding designs of the pulses in the spectral domain. We analyze the robustness of the two shapings taking into account fluctuations of the phase, amplitude, and the area of the pulse. We show the overall superiority of the parallel adiabatic passage especially when one faces the issue of a pulse area that is not well known. We show that the robustness of parallel adiabatic passage is not improved when it is…

Deep learning for core-collapse supernova detection

2021

The detection of gravitational waves from core-collapse supernova (CCSN) explosions is a challenging task, yet to be achieved, in which it is key the connection between multiple messengers, including neutrinos and electromagnetic signals. In this work, we present a method for detecting these kind of signals based on machine learning techniques. We tested its robustness by injecting signals in the real noise data taken by the Advanced LIGO-Virgo network during the second observing run, O2. We trained a newly developed Mini-Inception Resnet neural network using time-frequency images corresponding to injections of simulated phenomenological signals, which mimic the waveforms obtained in 3D num…

Resilience of singlet-state extraction against non-optimal resonance conditions

2008

We have recently presented a protocol for extracting the singlet state of two non-interacting high-dimensional spins through post-selection of the internal state of interaction mediators sent in succession [F. Ciccarello et al., arXiv:0710.3855v1]. The scheme requires each mediator's wavevector to obey appropriate resonance conditions. Here we show the robustness of the scheme in the realistic case where such conditions are not sharply fulfilled.

Dispersion-managed electrical transmission lines

2009

International audience; We examine the ability of electrical pulses to execute a highly stable propagation in a special electrical network made of concatenated pieces of discrete electrical lines with alternately positive and negative signs of the second-order dispersion. We show that such networks, called dispersion-managed electrical lines, induce a pulse breathing phenomenon, that is a dynamical behaviour with alternate regimes of pulse broadening and compression. This breathing phenomenon, which prevents the pulse from broadening without bounds during propagation in the network is the most appealing feature of the technique of dispersion management developed in the last decade in the ar…
