BIODEGRADAZIONE DEGLI IDROCARBURI: DALLE COMUNITÀ MICROBICHE MARINE AI SISTEMI READY TO USE PER IL BIORISANAMENTO
Crude oil is one of the major hazardous pollutants. A promising technology for the treatment of contaminated sites is based on biodegradation of oil pollutants by microbial populations. Several microorganisms are known to use hydrocarbons as carbon sources. In the marine environment, obligate hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria (BIC) have been defined as being ecologically important for the aerobic removal of hydrocarbons. Recent advances in microbial ecology make it possible to combine molecular and culture-dependent approaches to identify bacterial community at environmental sites. In this thesis a microbiological survey of the Priolo Bay (eastern coast of Sicily, Ionian Sea), a chronically poll…

X-Ray microcalorimeter detectors - Technology developments for high energy astrophysics space missions
2020
Improvements in the design, fabrication, and performance of astronomical detectors has ushered in the so-called era of multi messenger astrophysics, in which several different signals (electromagnetic waves, gravitational waves, neutrinos, cosmic rays) are processed to obtain detailed descriptions of their sources. Soft x-ray instrumentation has been developed in the last decades and used on board numerous space missions. This has allowed a deep understanding of several physical phenomena taking place in astrophysical sources of different scales from normal stars to galaxy clusters and huge black holes. On the other hand, imaging and spectral capabilities in the the hard x-rays are still la…
The effect of hydrocarbon on a pilot plant membrane bioreactor system
2015
The paper reports the main results from an experimental gathering campaign carried out on a bench scale plant for the evaluation of hydrocarbon effect on the system performance. In particular, a membrane bioreactor (MBR) under submerged configuration was analysed. The MBR plant was fed with synthetic wastewater containing hydrocarbons. Organic carbon, hydrocarbons and ammonium removal, kinetic constants, extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) production and membranes fouling rates have been assessed. The observed results highlighted good system performance in terms of both COD removal and nitrification, thus showing a sort of biomass adaptation to hydrocarbon. Such a result has been also…
OPTIMIZATION OF COGENERATION PLANT FOR APPLICATIONS IN FOOD INDUSTRY
2013
Cogeneration systems represent an effective solution for optimizing energy performance of users with contemporary thermal and electrical energy demand. An energy audit of an industrial pasta factory equipped with a cogeneration system natural gas fuelled has carried out along last two years. This CHP plant, with a 650 kWe capacity, currently covers a relevant fraction of the electric and high-temperature heat loads during peak hours, while it is switched off during off-peak hours because of the much lower electricity price. Heat content of flue gases is recovered by two cascaded gas-diathermic oil and diathermic oil- water heat exchangers; the superheated water obtained is then supplied to …
A CCHP system fed by low enthalpy sources in Mediterranean area
2018
Climate change and energy consumption increasingly call for a better use of energy sources. Renewable sources are still growing in the power production of many countries, so leading to the reduction of CO2 emissions. Further restrictions will be applied to the use of fossil fuels with a lot of consequences; for example, some German cities are all contemplating bans related to diesel pollution, and on the other hand some of the biggest car producers are planning to stop the diesel engines production in a few years. At the same time, some restrictions are applied also to many refrigerating fluids, in order of limiting the ODP and GWP values. This restriction leads to research new fluids and/o…
Boosting DMFC power output by adding sulfuric acid as a supporting electrolyte: Effect on cell performance equipped with platinum and platinum group …
2023
Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are promising electrochemical systems capable of producing electricity from the electrochemical oxidation of methanol and the reduction of oxygen. In this work, the effectiveness of the addition of sulfuric acid as a supporting electrolyte for methanol fuel composition was assessed. The results showed that the peak of power curve in DMFCs with Pt/C cathode electrocatalysts increased progressively from 70 mW cm−2 (0 mM of H2SO4) to 115 mW cm−2 with a concentration of 100 mM of H2SO4. These results underlined the positive effect of the addition of a supporting electrolyte in the methanol aqueous solution on the electrochemical output that was enhanced. Plati…
