The effect of long-chain bases on polysialic acid-mediated membrane interactions

2011

AbstractNegatively-charged polysialic acid (polySia) chains are usually membrane-bound and are often expressed on the surface of neuroinvasive bacterial cells, neural cells, and tumor cells. PolySia can mediate both repulsive and attractive cis interactions between membrane components, and trans interactions between membranes. Positively-charged long-chain bases are widely present in cells, are often localized in membranes and can function as bioactive lipids. Here we use Langmuir monolayer technique, fluorescence spectroscopy and electron microscopy of lipid vesicles to study the role of a simple long-chain base, octadecylamine (ODA), in both cis and trans interactions mediated by polySia …

Titania Photocatalysts for Selective Oxidations in Water

2011

Heterogeneous photocatalysis by polycrystalline semiconductor oxides is an unconventional technology that has been mainly applied for the degradation of organic and inorganic pollutants in both the vapor and liquid phase. The application of photocatalysis in synthetic routes has also been researched in recent years, demonstrating its viability as an alternative route in organic chemistry. This work illustrates the main findings in the application of heterogeneous photocatalysis to the oxidation of organic compounds dissolved in water, free of any organic co-solvent. Two main aspects of the oxidative process have been studied: the first one is the partial oxidation of various mono-substitute…

Infant exposure of perfluorinated compounds: Levels in breast milk and commercial baby food

2010

In this study, an analytical method to determine six previous termperfluorinatednext term compounds (PFCs) based on alkaline digestion and solid phase extraction (SPE) followed by liquid chromatography-quadrupole-linear ion trap mass spectrometry (LC-QqLIT-MS) was validated for the analysis of human breast milk, milk previous terminfantnext term formulas and cereals baby food. The average recoveries of the different matrices were in general higher than 70% with a relative standard deviation (RSD) lower than 21% and method limits of detection (MLOD) ranging from 1.2 to 362 ng/L for the different compounds and matrices. The method was applied to investigate the occurrence of PFCs in 20 sample…

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their oxygen-containing derivatives (OPAHs) in soils from the Angren industrial area, Uzbekistan.

2009

We measured the concentrations and depth distribution (0-10, 10-20 cm) of 31 PAHs and 12 OPAHs in soils at eleven equidistant sampling points along a 20-km transect in the Angren industrial region (coal mine, power plant, rubber factory, gold mine), Uzbekistan to gain an insight into their concentrations, sources, and fate. Concentrations of all compounds were mostly much higher in the 0-10 cm than in the 10-20 cm layer except in disturbed soil close to the coal mine. Proximity to one of the industrial emitters was the main determinant of PAH and OPAH concentrations. The Sigma31PAHs concentrations correlated positively with the Sigma7 carbonyl-OPAH (r=0.98, p<0.01), Sigma5 hydroxyl-OPAH (r=…

Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) determination in surfactant stabilized marine water emulsions

2022

Bilge waters are wastewaters produced on boats during navigation and usually contain hydrocarbons and oils. They cannot be released into the sea if not below certain hydrocarbon concentration limits set by current legislation. Surfactants are often used to improve the solubility of petroleum hydrocarbons in water and in this work, the analytical approach proposed is suitable to determine accurately the concentration of hydrocarbons in surfactant-rich waters, as found in bilge water or similar wastewater. The method relies on the surfactant precipitation by addition of potassium and calcium salts, which also promote TPH extraction through a “salting out” effect. This allows for an accurate d…

Elucidating the aryl hydrocarbon receptor antagonism from a chemical-structural perspective.

2020

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) plays an important role in several biological processes such as reproduction, immunity and homoeostasis. However, little is known on the chemical-structural and physicochemical features that influence the activity of AhR antagonistic modulators. In the present report, in vitro AhR antagonistic activity evaluations, based on a chemical-activated luciferase gene expression (AhR-CALUX) bioassay, and an extensive literature review were performed with the aim of constructing a structurally diverse database of contaminants and potentially toxic chemicals. Subsequently, QSAR models based on Linear Discriminant Analysis and Logistic Regression, as well as two tox…

Edificios de viajeros del Trenet 1920. De Francisco Mora a Calatrava

2003

Targeting the aryl hydrocarbon receptor with a novel set of triarylmethanes

2020

International audience; The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a chemical sensor upregulating the transcription of responsive genes associated with endocrine homeostasis, oxidative balance and diverse metabolic, immunological and inflammatory processes, which have raised the pharmacological interest on its modulation. Herein, a novel set of 32 unsymmetrical triarylmethane (TAM) class of structures has been synthesized, characterized and their AhR transcriptional activity evaluated using a cell-based assay. Eight of the assayed TAM compounds (14, 15, 18, 19, 21, 22, 25, 28) exhibited AhR agonism but none of them showed antagonist effects. TAMs bearing benzotrifluoride, naphthol or heteroarom…
