Association between exposure to organochlorine compounds and maternal thyroid status: Role of the iodothyronine deiodinase 1 gene.
2017
Introduction: Exposure to organochlorine compounds (OCs) may interfere with thyroid hormone (TH) homeostasis. The disruption of the deiodinase (DIO) enzymes has been proposed as a mechanism of action. Aim: To evaluate the association between exposure to OCs and TH status in pregnant women, as well as to explore the role of genetic variations in the DIO1 and DIO2 genes. Methods: The study population (n = 1128) was composed of pregnant women who participated in the INMA Project (Spain, 2003–2006). Hexachlorobenzene (HCB), 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethylene (4,4´-DDE), b-hexachlorocyclohexane (b-HCH), polychlorobiphenyl (PCB) congeners 138, 153 and 180, thyroid stimulating hormone (T…

Enzyme replacement therapy in heterozygous females with Fabry disease: results of a phase IIIB study.
2003
Summary: Fabry disease is an X-linked glycosphingolipid storage disorder caused by a deficiency of α-galactosidase A. Affected patients experience debilitating neuropathic pain and have premature mortality due to renal failure, cardiovascular disease or cerebrovascular complications. The disease may be X-linked dominant, since most females heterozygous for Fabry disease are affected clinically. We evaluated the safety, efficacy and pharmacokinetics of agalsidase alfa (Replagal) administered intravenously to female patients with Fabry disease in an open-label, single-centre study. Fifteen severely affected patients received agalsidase alfa at 0.2 mg/kg every other week for up to 55 weeks. Ag…
Beclomethasone dipropionate hydrofluoroalkane for the treatment of allergic rhinitis
2016
Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common respiratory disease, and its prevalence is increasing all over the world, both in adults and in children. Patients experience symptoms that may negatively impact on physical, social and psychological well-being. Hence, if left untreated, allergic rhinitis may significantly affect quality of life. Under current guidelines, intranasal corticosteroids are considered the most effective drugs and they are recommended as first-line therapy. Among the several corticosteroid intranasal sprays available, beclomethasone dipropionate is one of the most prescribed. Recently, new intranasal hydrofluoroalkane-propelled formulations with little or no impact on the ozone …

Cortical stimulation and reflex excitability of spinal cord neurones in man.
1995
The H reflex technique was used to evaluate the influence exerted by cortical conditioning on the excitability of the alpha-motoneurone pool and on IA interneuronal activity (reciprocal inhibition). In ten subjects at absolute rest electrical and magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex was transcranially applied during flexor carpi radialis H reflex eliciting and in conditions of reciprocal inhibition induced by radial nerve stimulation. The time courses showed that at intensities below motor threshold, electrical brain conditioning induced an increase in the amplitude of the test reflex when the cortical shock was given 4 ms after the test H reflex. On the contrary, reciprocal inhibition …
Abstract WP201: Stroke Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Detected by 72 hour- versus Prolonged ECG-monitoring
2018
Background: Detecting concealed paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (pAF) is a major focus in the workup of ischemic-stroke-patients. The minimal ECG-monitoring for stroke patients was recently expanded from 24 to 72 hours. However, it has been shown that even more prolonged monitoring reveals further pAF-cases. Our aim was to determine, whether known predictors for underlying pAF differ between stroke patients with AF that occurs on shorter (72h) or more prolonged ECG-monitoring (>72h). Methods: The Find-AF RANDOMISED -trial (NCT01855035) evaluated 3x10-day Holter-ECG vs. standard-care in patients > 60 years with acute ischemic strokes with the primary endpoint of novel pAF after 6 month…
Abstract 124: How to Preselect Stroke Patients for Enhanced ECG-Monitoring - Evaluation of Predictors of Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation in "Find-AFra…
2019
Background: Detecting concealed paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (pAF) is a major focus of the workup of ischemic-stroke-patients, but requires elaborate ECG-monitoring. We aimed to evaluate pre-specified predictors to determine stroke patients with an increased probability of underlying pAF. We applied cut-off-levels recently suggested by the German Stroke Society 1 . Methods: The Find-AF RANDOMISED -trial (NCT01855035) evaluated 3x10-day Holter-ECG vs. standard-care in 398 patients > 60 years with acute ischemic strokes. The primary endpoint was novel pAF after 6 months. 27 patients in the intervention arm (13.5 %) and 9 patients in the control arm (9.0 %) met the primary endpoint (p=0.…
Abstract WP200: Development and Validation of a Score to Detect Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation During Long-term Holter-monitoring After Acute Ischemi…
2018
Introduction: Atrial fibrillation remains one of the most common causes of ischemic stroke. The diagnosis of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (pAF) frequently escapes routine diagnostic due to its intermittent and asymptomatic occurrence. Currently prolonged monitoring times (72h) are recommended, but did not find their way into everyday practice. Therefore an individual patient selection for prolonged ECG-monitoring might increase the diagnostic yield of pAF in a resource-saving and cost-effective manner. Methods: We used individual patient data from three prospective studies (n total =1556) which performed a prolonged Holter ECG-monitoring (at least 72 h) and centralized data evaluation af…
Reactivation of aerobic granular sludge for the treatment of industrial shipboard slop wastewater: Effects of long-term storage on granules structure…
2021
Abstract This work reports on reactivation of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) for the treatment of industrial recalcitrant wastewater (slop wastewater) characterized by high salinity and hydrocarbons. AGS were reactivated in two reactors, R1 and R2, to treat industrial slop wastewater after a long-term storage for 12-months at 4 °C. In R1, salt-adapted mature aerobic granules were previously subjected to a step-wise increase of hydrocarbons, whereas in R2 aerobic granules were previously cultivated in presence of salinity and hydrocarbons. After a short-term reactivation period, the slop dosage caused a simultaneous decrease of granules dimensions and proteins/polysaccharides (PN/PS) ratio do…
