Three-dimensional parametric modeling of bicuspid aortopathy and comparison with computational flow predictions

Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV)-associated ascending aneurysmal aortopathy (namely “bicuspid aortopathy”) is a heterogeneous disease making surgeon predictions particularly challenging. Computational flow analysis can be used to evaluate the BAV-related hemodynamic disturbances, which likely lead to aneurysm enlargement and progression. However, the anatomic reconstruction process is time consuming so that predicting hemodynamic and structural evolution by computational modeling is unfeasible in routine clinical practice. Objectives: Microcephaly is a congenital anomaly where the baby’s head is smaller than expected when compared with babies of the same sex, age and ethnicity. Many of these babies will have underdeveloped brains. Clinical Evaluation Versus Undetectable High-Sensitivity Troponin for Assessment of Patients With Acute Chest Pain.

Decision-making in acute chest pain remains challenging despite normal (below ninety-ninth percentile) high-sensitivity troponin (hs-cTn). Some studies suggest that undetectable hs-cTn, far below the ninety-ninth percentile, might rule out acute coronary syndrome. We investigated clinical data in comparison to undetectable hs-cTnT. The study comprised 682 patients (November 2010 to September 2011) presenting at the emergency department with chest pain and normal hs-cTnT (14 ng/l). Genetic control of pheromones in Drosophila simulans. II. kete, a locus on the X chromosome

0016-6731 (Print) Journal Article; The production of Drosophila cuticular hydrocarbons, including contact pheromones, is under polygenic control. To investigate X-linked loci, EMS mutations were induced in Drosophila simulans flies. A mutant strain was discovered which in both sexes show a reduction in the biosynthesis of both 7-tricosene (7-T) the species contact pheromone and all other linear hydrocarbons. The locus controlling this effect, kete, is recessive and was localized to I, 18.5. Unlike a previously identified gene on the second chromosome of this species, Ngbo, kete does not affect the ratio of 7-T:7-pentacosene (7-P). Toxicological Profile of Ultrapure 2,2´,3,4,4´,5,5´-Heptachlorbiphenyl (PCB 180) in Adult Rats

PCB 180 is a persistent non-dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyl (NDL-PCB) abundantly present in food and the environment. Risk characterization of NDL-PCBs is confounded by the presence of highly potent dioxin-like impurities. We used ultrapure PCB 180 to characterize its toxicity profile in a 28-day repeat dose toxicity study in young adult rats extended to cover endocrine and behavioral effects. Using a loading dose/maintenance dose regimen, groups of 5 males and 5 females were given total doses of 0, 3, 10, 30, 100, 300, 1000 or 1700 mg PCB 180/kg body weight by gavage. The effects of some anesthetics and detergents on the Fe2+/ascorbate-stimulated non-enzymatic lipid peroxidation potential and on the NADPH-dependent enzymatic lipid peroxidation capacity were characterized in mouse heart homogenates. 2. 2. Chlorpromazine turned out to be the most efficient inhibitor, causing a 50% inhibition at a concentration of 0.03 mM in the non-enzymatic assay, and at a concentration of 0.02 mM in the enzymatic assay. 3. 3. This study compared cardiovascular responses of CAD patients during graded upper-body dynamic and static exercise in cold and neutral environments. The hypothalamic supraoptic nucleus (SON) contains two major populations of magnocellular neurosecretory neurones, producing and secreting vasopressin and oxytocin, respectively (for review see Poulain & Wakerley 1982). Neurones of a subpopulation of supraoptic neurosecretory cells share the capability of generating phasic bursts of action potentials.
