Clinical significance of macrophage colony stimulating factor levels in acute coronary syndrome.

2009

Aim. The aim of this paper was to ascertain whether macrophage colony stimulating factor (MCSF) serum levels, measured during the acute phase of coronary syndromes (ACS), are useful to predict short term outcomes. Methods. Seventy-four consecutive patients (mean age: 66±12), admitted to the Intensive Coronary Care Unit of Palermo University Hospital (Italy) affected by ACS were observed; 39 patients showed a non ST elevation (NSTEMI) and 35 showed a ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). During the hospital stay, all patients underwent echocardiography and 84% of patients received coronary angiography. Peripheral venous blood samples were collected for the determination of serum levels…

Electrocardiographic Diagnosis of Atrial Tachycardia: Classification, P-Wave Morphology, and Differential Diagnosis with Other Supraventricular Tachy…

2015

Atrial tachycardia is defined as a regular atrial activation from atrial areas with centrifugal spread, caused by enhanced automaticity, triggered activity or microreentry. New ECG classification differentiates between focal and macroreentrant atrial tachycardia. Macroreentrant atrial tachycardias include typical atrial flutter and other well characterized macroreentrant circuits in right and left atrium. Typical atrial flutter has been described as counterclockwise reentry within right atrial and it presents a characteristic ECG “sawtooth” pattern on the inferior leads. The foci responsible for focal atrial tachycardia do not occur randomly throughout the atria but tend to cluster at chara…

Atrial Fibrillation Is Associated with a Marker of Endothelial Function and Oxidative Stress in Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction

2015

International audience; Background Atrial fibrillation (AF), whether silent or symptomatic, is a frequent and severe complication of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous eNOS inhibitor, is a risk factor for endothelial dysfunction. We addressed the relationship between ADMA plasma levels and AF occurrence in AMI.Methods 273 patients hospitalized for AMI were included. Continuous electrocardiographic monitoring (CEM) !48 hours was recorded and ADMA was measured by High Performance Liquid Chromatography on admission blood sample. Results The incidence of silent and symptomatic AF was 39(14%) and 29 (11%), respectively. AF patients were markedly o…

Electrocardiographic and other clinical correlates of walking ability in older women

2009

Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine how resting electrocardiographic (ECG) and other clinical variables, which can be included in a routine clinical examination, predict walking ability in older women. Three hundred and twenty women (63–75 years) without overt cardiac diseases and apparent mobility limitations were studied. Measurements performed were clinical examination (standard 12-lead resting ECG, assessment of physical activity level, presence of chronic diseases, use of beta-blockers, body mass index (BMI), ability to squat, resting blood pressure) and six-minute walking test. Participants walked 533 ± 75 m in the six-minute walking test. The best electrocardiographic p…

Effects of amsacrine (m-AMSA), a new aminoacridine antitumor drug, on the rabbit heart.

1983

There is emerging clinical evidence that amsacrine (m-AMSA) administration may be associated with cardiotoxic effects such as severe, even fatal, ventricular arrhythmias and impairment of the inotropic performance of the heart. Information on the cardiac effects of m-AMSA in animals is scanty. Studies on mice, dogs, and monkeys have not evidenced the cardiotoxicity of the compound. The data presented in this paper show that m-AMSA causes acute ECG alterations in normal rabbits and a dose-related negative inotropic effect on the isolated rabbit heart, suggesting that this species may be a useful model for the study of the cardiac actions of this antiblastic.

Assessment of Thoracic Aortic Dimensions in an Experimental Setting: Comparison of Different Unenhanced Magnetic Resonance Angiography Techniques Wit…

2008

PURPOSE To compare different unenhanced magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) techniques for quantitative evaluation of vessel lumen in an experimental setting in young pigs whose dimensions allow for a comparison with a pediatric population. MATERIAL AND METHODS Magnetic resonance imaging was performed in 5 healthy ventilated pigs at 1.5 T. Three different electrocardiogram (ECG)-triggered sequences were applied for MRA: [TSE-Db] T2-weighted dark-blood TurboSpinEcho (2.0 x 1.1 x 4 mm3); [trueFISP] 2D-steady-state-free-precession (2.2 x 1.8 x 2 mm3); [NAV] respiratory-gated, T2-prepared 3D-trueFISP (1.3 x 1.3 x 1.3 mm3). ECG-gated-CT angiography (CTA) (16-row CT, 1 mm collimation) served as …

Incidence, Predictive Factors, and Prognostic Impact of Silent Atrial Fibrillation After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation.

2018

New onset atrial fibrillation post-transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is common and is associated with adverse outcomes. However, silent atrial fibrillation (AF) is poorly documented in the context. This study sought to evaluate the incidence, predictive factors, and prognostic value of Silent AF post-TAVI. All the consecutive patients with TAVI were prospectively analyzed by continuous electrocardiogram monitoring≥48 hours after implantation. Silent AF was defined as asymptomatic episodes lasting at least 30 seconds. The population was divided into 3 groups: history of AF, no-AF, and silent AF. Among the 206 patients implanted with TAVI, 19 (16.1%) developed silent AF. Compared…

Morphology-based measurement of activation time in human atrial fibrillation

2003

The measurement of the activation time is crucial to allow the correct automatic analysis and classification of intracardiac electrograms recorded in the human atria during atrial fibrillation (AF). This study proposes a method which accounts for the morphology of bipolar signals. After ventricular artifact removal and activation wave recognition, the fiducial point of the activation wave was set at its local barycentre (LB). The method was tested on a set of 30 AF bipolar recordings of increasing complexity class; its performance was compared with that of the traditional methods of maximum peak (MP) or maximum slope (MS) estimation, taking the manual measurements performed by an expert car…

Ventricular fibrillation detection from ECG surface electrodes using different filtering techniques, window length and artificial neural networks

2017

Medical personnel face many difficulties when diagnosing ventricular fibrillation (VF). Its correct diagnosis allows to decide the right medical treatment and, therefore, it is essential to tell it apart adequately from ventricular tachycardia (VT) and other arrhythmias. If the required therapy is not appropriate, the personnel could cause serious injuries or even induce VF. In this work, a diagnosis automatic system for the detection of VF through feature extraction was developed. To verify the validity of this method, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) classifier was used. The ECG signals used were obtained from the MIT-BIH Malignant Ventricular Arrhythmia Database and AHA (2000 series) d…
