Applications of xylochemistry from laboratory to industrial scale

2020

Xylochemicals and their utilisation in total synthesis and industrial applications are highlighted in this review. This class of chemicals consists of bio-based molecules or building blocks derived from renewable feedstocks like plant-biomass, lignocellulose as well as waste-streams. The advantages over petroleum-based chemicals are presented with the aid of specific examples ranging from the total synthesis of natural products, relevant industrial applications to the exploitation of CO2 as a C1 feedstock. This review contributes to the trend of a “greener” and a more sustainable chemistry.

Live Action Role Play and the Development of Teacher Competences: Evaluation of “Everyday Life in the Classroom”

2016

Building on Dörner’s (1996) theory of complex problem-solving, a learning scenario for teacher students was created and tested. Classroom management is interpreted as a complex problem, which requires the integration of competing interests and tackling multiple, simultaneous tasks under time pressure and with limited information. In addition, rising emotions are likely to impede thinking and the quality of decision-making. To prepare student teachers to understand and reflect the complex problem-solving challenges inherent in classroom management, we developed the live action role play “Everyday Life in the Classroom” which was embedded in a seminar structure to guide the development of ana…

Automatic Operation and Control of a Novel Coalescing Centrifugal Pump for Improved Oil/Water Separation

2019

Summary In this paper we present the development and implementation of automatic operation and control for a pump/hydrocyclone produced-water-treatment system to maximize oil/water-separation efficiency. A so-called perturb-and-observe (P&O) algorithm is adapted for a novel centrifugal pump to continuously optimize the point of operation. The novel pump coalesces and increases the size of oil droplets in the produced water, resulting in a unique relationship between the coalescing effect and the point of operation, and allowing for the successful implementation of the P&O algorithm. The algorithm was implemented in two different setups, one measuring the droplet-size distribution be…

Diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolemia in a large cohort of Italian genotyped hypercholesterolemic patients

2022

Background and aims: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is the most relevant genetic cause of early cardiovascular disease (CVD). FH is suspected when low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels exceed the 95th percentile of the population distribution. Different diagnostic scoring systems have been developed, as the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network (DLCN) score, used worldwide. The aim of the study is to describe the characteristics of FH patients of a large cohort of more than eight hundred genotyped subjects enrolled in an Italian Lipid Clinic, and evaluate the DLCN score performance applied retrospectively to the case study. Methods: 836 hypercholesterolemic patients with LDL-C > 4.…

Balance Properties and Distribution of Squares in Circular Words

2008

We study balance properties of circular words over alphabets of size greater than two. We give some new characterizations of balanced words connected to the Kawasaki-Ising model and to the notion of derivative of a word. Moreover we consider two different generalizations of the notion of balance, and we find some relations between them. Some of our results can be generalised to non periodic infinite words as well.

4-(3-Hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-3-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)-2,5-dihydro-1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione

2005

The title compound, C20H19NO7, crystallizes in the space group Pna21. X-ray analysis shows the compound has the desired 3′-hydroxy and 4′-methoxy substitution pattern, as in the natural template combretastatin A-4.

Spin doctoring in British and German election campaigns: How the press is being confronted with a new quality of political PR

2000

The 1997 British and 1998 German general elections showed striking parallels and distinctive differences in the way Blair and Schroeder delivered their campaigns and defeated long-sitting conservative governments. Of vital importance was a new quality of political public relations called `spin doctoring'. In this, the British Labour Party served as a kind of role model for the German Social Democratic Party. This article traces the origins and different meanings of `spin doctoring' in both countries, distinguishes between media-related and non-media-related spin activities and analyses it against the background of the specific national contexts. The aims and methods of political spin doctor…

Downstream Intra-organizational Product Market Competition Between Employees: A Theoretical Approach

2020

To investigate the downstream internal competition and its effect on firm’s performance comprehensive literature review has been conducted. The concentration is on recognized social dimensions, similar focus is on communications, interactions and interrelationship between departments and business units. The Integration of intra-organizational competition and internal social comparison balances the literature review. Although it is quite controversial to practice and encourage internal competition having it’s sustained effect on behavioral of employees. The basis of literature review relies on human tendency to compare and coordinate work activities inside firm’s boundaries. The literature e…

Why do Norwegian nurses leave the public health service to practice CAM?

2009

Accepted version of an article published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice, 15 (2009), 147-151 This paper explores a number of issues associated with the recent increase in nurses choosing to leave the Norwegian health care system in order to become independent practitioners of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). The paper suggests that in Norway, nurses perceive medical hegemony continues to persist. Nurses perceive restrictions in their ability to develop their professional roles and status. CAM would appear to offer many nurses, the opportunity to develop their clinical skills in an autonomous, egalitarian and more holistic environment.
