Ginger and Turmeric Essential Oils for Weed Control and Food Crop Protection

Ginger and turmeric are two food ingredients that are in high demand due to their flavor and positive effects on health. The biological properties of these spices are closely related to the aromatic compounds they contain. The chemical compositions of their essential oils and their in vitro phytotoxic activity against weeds (Portulaca oleracea, Lolium multiflorum, Echinochloa crus-galli, Cortaderia selloana, and Nicotiana glauca) and food crops (tomato, cucumber, and rice) were studied. This article explores the development of the theme of the Life-giving Spring in Byzantine iconography. The path towards its establishment was initiated at the moment when a representation rule, an original convention was set. Oggetto del contributo sono l'Immacolata Concezione e il San Michele Arcangelo custoditi rispettivamente nella Cattedrale di Piazza Armerina e nella Chiesa Madre di Cerami, centri dell'entroterra siciliano. Il volume esamina, per la prima volta, i simulacri lignei del Settecento custoditi nelle chiese, nei Musei Diocesani e nelle collezioni private dell’Isola. Dopo una premessa sui committenti, si indagano i più rappresentativi simulacri lignei del XVIII secolo della Sicilia occidentale. Le statue sono state eseguite, secondo la pertinente temperie culturale, da scultori locali, talvolta ignari dei tratti innovativi del tempo, che hanno reiterato stilemi dei secoli precedenti. Tra gli artisti con bottega a Palermo, aggiornati alle più moderne istanze, si annoverano Barcellona, Quattrocchi e Valenza. In order to control fungal colonization and the related deterioration process of cultural objects, several chemical compounds are actually utilised. These products generally are toxic, not biodegradable and persisting for long time in the environment, also acting on not-targeted biological systems. Emergence and Disappearance of an Immune Molecule, an Antimicrobial Lectin, in Basal Metazoa

Sponges (phylum Porifera) represent the evolutionarily oldest metazoans that comprise already a complex immune system and are related to the crown taxa of the protostomians and the deuterostomians. Here, we demonstrate the existence of a tachylectin-related protein in the demosponge Suberites domuncula, termed Suberites lectin. The MAPK pathway was activated in response to lipopolysaccharide treatment of the three-dimensional cell aggregates, the primmorphs; this process was abolished by the monosaccharide D-GlcNAc.
