Tutkielman aiheena on rakkaus ja pelko ranskalaisessa 1800-luvun romanttisen aikakauden teatteriteok-sessa On ne badine pas avec l’amour (1834), jonka on kirjoittanut kirjailija-runoilija Alfred de Musset. Musset on palkittu (l’Academie Française, 1852) ranskalainen teatterikirjailija, jonka suhde tunnettuun kirjailijattareen George Sandiin on vaikuttanut hänen tuotantoonsa. This article is about the artist John Piper's participation in one of the programmes for the preservation of national heritage that were organised during the Second World War. It focuses on Piper's paintings and texts – notably the articles that he contributed to the Architectural Review – in order to illustrate the aesthetic controversy between modernism and tradition, abstraction and naturalism, which underpins the ambivalence of reconstruction.
