Importancia de la dislipidemia en la enfermedad cardiovascular: un punto de vista

2015

The authors present their view on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, accepting the European ESC/EAS guidelines. They consider that the aim of the lipid control, based on LDL-C goals, is essential for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. In subjects with metabolic syndrome (mainly, abdominal obesity, pre-diabetes and diabetes), the primary objective should be apoB or Non-HDL-C, which are better associated with cardiovascular risk. The treatment must be lifestyle changes and control of other risk factors. After calculating cardiovascular risk, statins are the first therapeutic step, with the strength and dose needed to achieve LDL-C goals. If targets are not achiev…

Glycaemic variability using continuous glucose monitoring and endothelial function in the metabolic syndrome and in Type 2 diabetes

2010

Diabet. Med. 27, 872–878 (2010) Abstract Aims  Subjects who are at increased risk of developing diabetes may have increased glycaemic variability associated with endothelial dysfunction and possibly subclinical atherosclerosis, which may lead to increased cardiovascular risk observed at the time of diabetes diagnosis. To investigate this hypothesis, we measured endothelial function, carotid intima-media thickness and glycaemic variability using 48-h continuous subcutaneous glucose monitoring in 3 groups of overweight or obese subjects – those without the metabolic syndrome, and those with the metabolic syndrome with or without newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes. Methods  Consecutive subjects, …

Time and frequency domain analysis of long-term heart rate variability in an experimental model of diet-induced metabolic syndrome

2021

Abstract Background Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is defined as the set of at least three of the following conditions: central obesity, elevation of triglycerides, decreased in high-density lipoproteins, systemic hypertension and glucose intolerance. MetS is linked with a high prevalence of cardiovascular disease, including sudden cardiac death and atrial arrhythmias, which may be a consequence of changes related to the structure, function and autonomic control of the heart. One of the underlying mechanisms responsible could be the alteration of sinus node automaticity. Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis is a useful non-invasive tool for evaluating alterations in neural control of cardiac au…

Violence and Abuse: Battered Child

2019

Battered child is a crucial social and medical issue, which represents a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children. The ‘child abuse syndrome’ is a clinical condition in young children who have received serious physical abuse, and should be considered in any child exhibiting evidence of fracture of any bone, subdural haematoma, failure to thrive, soft tissue swellings or skin bruising, in any child who dies suddenly, or where the degree and type of injury is at variance with the history given regarding the occurrence of the trauma. A clinical-radiological-forensic collaboration is crucial for its identification.

Energy spectral density as valid parameter to compare postural control between subjects with nonspecific chronic low back pain vs healthy subjects : …

2021

Abstract Background Nonspecific chronic low back pain (NSCLBP) is one of the most common and frequent health problems. Objetive to compare postural control (i.e. center of pressure (CoP) displacement and energy spectral density (ESD)) using technological devices (accelerometers and pressure platform) between subjects with NSCLBP and healthy subjects. Methods A cross-sectional case-control study was conducted. Observational study (STROBE). The final sample consisted of 60 subjects (30 NSCLBP subjects and 30 healthy subjects). Triaxial accelerometer and pressure platform were used in order to obtain ESD and CoP displacement measurements during four balance tasks (i.e. with and without vision …

THU0366 SYSTEMATIC CORONARY RISK EVALUATION (SCORE) MISCLASSIFIES CARDIOVASCULAR RISK IN ANTISYNTHETASE SYNDROME: RESULTS OF THE PILOT MULTICENTRIC S…

2020

Background:Antisynthetase Syndrom (ASyS) is an autoimmune overlap disease characterized by antiaminoacyl-tRNA-synthetase (anti-ARS) antibodies and the classic triad of arthritis, myositis and interstitial lung disease (ILD) (1). Markers of cardiovascular (CV) or cerebrovascular (CVB) risk have never been examined in ASyS.Objectives:Aim of this study (RIsk of CARdiovascular Disease in ASyS: RI.CAR.D.A.) was to test the ability of an established traditional CV risk prediction score (Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation-SCORE) and its EULAR modified version (mSCORE) to identify ASyS patients at high CV risk. Moreover, we sought to examine for the first time associations of CV surrogate markers …

Dental considerations for the patient with diabetes

2011

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most frequent pathologies that dentists encounter, due to its high prevalence worldwide. It is diagnosed by the repeated obtaining of fasting plasma glucose levels of 126 mg/ dl or higher, or glycosylated hemoglobin of 6’5% or higher. Diabetes (especially if it is not well controlled) brings with it a greater risk of periodontal disease, which is the most frequent complication. On the other hand, the possible influence of periodontal disease on glycemic control is still not well established. Other reported manifestations are xerostomia, sialadenosis and burning mouth syndrome. With regard to dental caries, oral lichen planus and candidosis, recent studie…

P1605Increased irregularity and spectral complexity of the intrinsic pacemaker beat-to-beat variability correlates with increased metabolic syndrome …

2019

Abstract Background Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is becoming one of the future potential leading risk factors for heart and cardiovascular disease. MetS relates to a condition associated with at least three metabolic risk factors raising risk for health diseases concomitantly such as diabetes, stroke, hypertension, obesity and dyslipidemia. This can lead to chest pain, heart attack, heart damage and overall higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease, atrial fibrillation and sudden cardiac death. One of the underlying mechanisms of the progressive remodeling in presence of MetS components could be altered automaticity, which would reflect modifications of sinus node activity. These phenomena c…
