A Study of Students' Reasoning About “There exists no ...”

International audience; In this paper, we report findings from two studies of students' engagement in metatheoretical tasks drawn from a model of the reasoning requirements of a proof by contradiction. The studies explored students' engagement in and success with the tasks, as well as the similarities and differences in students' and mathematicians' approaches. Findings indicate students tended towards syntactic, logical theory approaches while mathematicians gravitate towards semantic, mathematical theory approaches. Un projet immobilier de réhabilitation de l’îlot du prieuré Saint-Pierre (dépendance de l’abbaye Saint-Claude dans le Jura), accolé à l’église éponyme, au NO de la ville ancienne de Bar-sur-Aube, a entraîné la prescription d’un diagnostic archéologique sur les deux « cours » concernées par le projet et sur une analyse du potentiel archéologique conservé en élévation. Abstract Sutural patterns in the dermal skull roof were among others studied in Discosauriscus austriacus (Seymouriamorpha) and Onchiodon labyrinthicus (Temnospondyli). Main sutural structures are defined as lamellae; shelves; vertical walls; and grooves. These types have different functional manifestations. The basic pattern is described for Discosauriscus austriacus. Similarities of patterns in taxa not closely related are most likely a result of convergence. Intraspecific variability is generally low but can be observed during ontogeny. Nonlinear Feedback Control and Stability Analysis of a Proof-of-Work Blockchain

In this paper a novel feedback controller and stability analysis of a blockchain implementation is developed by using a control engineering perspective. The controller output equals the difficulty adjustment in the mining process while the feedback variable is the average block time over a certain time period. The computational power (hash rate) of the miners is considered a disturbance in the model. The developed controller is tested against a simulation model with constant disturbance, step and ramp responses as well as with a high-frequency sinusoidal disturbance. Scalable Electro-Optic Control of Localized Bistable Switching in Broad-Area VCSELs Using Reconfigurable Funnel Waveguides

We demonstrate a steplike optical modulation based on the activation and deactivation of a bistable localized structure using a photoinduced and reconfigurable miniaturized 30 × 30 μm electroactivated funnel waveguide. Control of a single 10-μm-diameter spot in a 200-μm-diameter vertical-cavity surfaceemitting laser at 980 nm is achieved modulating the phase of an exciting beam in the specific position of the spot in the cavity. This localized on-off response can be scaled into arrays and offer a possible route to fast integrated optical logical functions and memory at low intensities at near-infrared wavelengths.

Abstract This paper presents how the electric vehicle roof integrated photovoltaic (PV) powered ventilation can be used for controlling the climate of the car. In this work, a fully-functional Renault Zoe electric car has been used to conduct experiments for PV powered ventilation. These experiments have been part of a wider research project of testing electric vehicles of the Edinburgh Napier University’s Transport Research Institute. This paper analyses the kārbandi of the Hashti pavilion at Bagh-e-Dolat Abad in Yazd. Kārbandi is a spatial system obtained through the projection of a star-shaped drawing onto a curved surface. It is characterised by a complex use of geometry and repetitive symmetry. The analysis of its geometrical aspects contributes to an understanding of the traditional rules underlying the original design. The kārbandi of the octagonal vestibule of the Hashti pavilion consists of a complex roof system that completes the octagonal volume of the room below; its intrados presents a pattern of interlocking ribbed arches. Use of DIAGNOdent and VistaProof in diagnostic of Pre-Cavitated Caries Lesions—A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Objective: To analyse the published evidence of the validity of DIAGNDOdent and VistaProof in diagnosing carious depths in pre-cavitated lesions. Material and methods: A systematic review was carried out after identifying a total of 184 articles, including 27 concerning the qualitative review and a subsequent meta-analysis. The quality of the studies was evaluated by using the QUADAS-2 tool. Results: For DIAGNOdent, the sensitivity value was 0.77, the specificity value was 0.75 and AUC was 0.81 for the global meta-analyses.
