Occurrence of invading bacteria in radicular dentin of periodontally diseased teeth: Microbiological findings
1997
Bacterial invasion in roots of periodontally diseased teeth, which has been recently documented using cultural and microscopic techniques, may be important in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the occurrence and the species of invading bacteria in radicular dentin of periodontally diseased teeth. Samples were taken from the middle layer of radicular dentin of 26 periodontally diseased teeth. 14 healthy teeth were used as controls. Dentin samples were cultured anaerobically. The chosen methodology allowed the determination of the numbers of bacteria present in both deeper and outer part of dentinal tubules, and the bacterial concentra…
Clinical efficacy of semiconductor laser application as an adjunct to conventional scaling and root planing.
2005
Background and Objectives: The aim of the in vitro study was to examine the clinical efficacy of semiconductor laser periodontal pocket irradiation as an adjunct to conventional scaling and root planing. Materials and Methods: Twenty-two healthy patients with a need of periodontal treatment (15 women, 7 men, mean age 45.0 10.8 years) with at least four teeth in all quadrants, were included. All of them underwent a conventional periodontal treatment including scaling and root planing. Using a split mouth design, two randomly chosen quadrants (one upper and the corresponding lower one) were subsequently treated with an 809 nm GaAlAs laser operated at a power output of 1.0 Watt using a 0.6 mm…
In vivo evaluation of periodontal microcirculatory changes associated with endodontic treatment.
2014
The purpose of this study was to investigate in vivo the gingival microcirculatory changes associated with endodontic treatment using the continuous wave of condensation technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty necrotic one canal roots of 20 cooperative patients of both sexes, aged between 20 and 43 years, were selected. All patients were examined by capillaroscopy before, immediately after endodontic treatment, and after 7 days. The last examination was carried out by the same operator, and repeated twice for each examined area: masticatory, buccal and labial mucosa corresponding to the endodontically treated root. All canals were prepared using a simultaneous technique with Ni-Ti files (M…
Inward currents in primary nociceptive neurons of the rat and pain sensations in humans elicited by infrared diode laser pulses
2002
Radiant heat is often used to study nociception in vivo. We now used infrared radiation generated by a diode laser stimulator (wavelength 980 nm) to investigate transduction mechanisms for noxious heat stimuli in acutely dissociated dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons of rats in vitro. The laser stimulator offered the unique opportunity to test whether the same stimuli also elicit pain sensations in humans. A specific heat-induced current (I(heat)) was elicited in six of 13 small DRG neurons (diameteror =30 microm) tested in the whole-cell configuration of the patch-clamp mode. Current responses in the seven heat-insensitive neurons were within the range explainable by the temperature depend…

Influence of gender and social factors on oral health, treatment degree and choice of dental restorative materials in patients from a dental school. Abstract: Objective: The attitude towards oral health is influenced by gender, the level of education and the social background of the patients The aim of the present study was to determine a possible relationship of gender, the educational level and the oral health as well as the choice of dental restorations. Methodology: A total of 2374 outpatients (age: 18–80 years) from a University dental school were assessed. …
Neomuscular fatigue to power loading using a weight-stack device fitted with or without additional rubber band resistance
2014
The addition of a rubber band (RB) to traditional weight-based resistance may be beneficial regarding the deceleration phase common during explosive power actions with light weights. This would lead to greater force and muscle activity during the latter part of the movement, but this may influence the distribution of neuromuscular fatigue. Fifteen men performed 2 knee extension power loadings (5 × 5 × 40% of 1 repetition maximum [1RM]) using a typical weight-stack device without (WS) and with the addition of a RB (WS + RB) in a crossover design. Concentric contractions were performed as fast as possible, and analyzed for torque, velocity, power, and vastus lateralis and medialis surface ele…
Effect of innervation zones in estimating biceps brachii force-EMG relationship during isometric contraction
2012
Measuring muscle forces in vivo is invasive and consequently indirect methods e.g., electromyography (EMG) are used in estimating muscular force production. The aim of the present paper was to examine what kind of effect the disruption of the physiological signal caused by the innervation zone has in predicting the force/torque output from surface EMG. Twelve men (age 26 (SD ±3)years; height 179 (±6)cm; body mass 73 (±6)kg) volunteered as subjects. They were asked to perform maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) in elbow flexion, and submaximal contractions at 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 75% of the recorded MVC. EMG was measured from biceps brachii muscle with an electrode grid of 5…
Transthoracic three-dimensional echocardiographic volumetry of distorted left ventricles using rotational scanning
1997
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relation of transthoracic three- and two-dimensional echocardiographic left ventricular volumetry to cineventriculographic volumetry. Twenty-five patients with distorted left ventricles were included in the study. To demonstrate the impact of acquiring data by rotational scanning, we performed three- and two-dimensional echocardiography in 36 latex ventricles with data acquisition in different areas of the ultrasound sectors. Interobserver and intraobserver variability were calculated to test for reproducibility. The three-dimensional imaging system consisted of a rotation motor device, a transthoracic 2.5 MHz transducer, a conventional ultrasou…
The evaluation of apicectomy without retrograde filling in terms of lesion size localization and approximation to the anatomic structures
2018
Background The purpose of this study was to evaluate of the patients who underwent apical resection. Besides assess the classification of resection side, localization, lesion size, approximation of anatomic structures and the purpose of the apical surgery retrospectively. Material and Methods In this stutdy 782 patients and 1191 apical resection applied tooth evaluated. 504 of the patients were famale and 278 were male. Patients age was between 13 and 76 years old and operated between January 2016 and January 2017. The study includes incisor, canine and premolar teeth which had the apical resection as the first time. Operation side evaluated from orthopantomograph and periapical radiographs…
Changes in anatomic position of root canal orifices in pluriradicular teeth following re-location during endodontic treatment
2017
Abstract Direct access to the root canals in posterior teeth for endodontic treatment is most frequently facilitated by the straightening of the coronal parts of the root canals, having as a consequence the relocation of the canal orifices on the map of the floor of the pulp chamber ( Christie and Thompson, 1994 ). This procedure intentionally moves the coronal aspect of a canal away from the center of the chamber, while simultaneously removing internal dentin from the pulp chamber walls. The aim of this study was to evaluate the displacement resulting from the relocation of root canal orifices during the initial phase of rotary root canal treatment in molars using the dental operating micr…
