Comparative analysis of numerical and experimental data of orthodontic mini-implants

2011

The purpose of this study was to compare numerical simulation data derived from finite element analysis (FEA) to experimental data on mini-implant loading. Nine finite element (FE) models of mini-implants and surrounding bone were derived from corresponding experimental specimens. The animal bone in the experiment consisted of bovine rib. The experimental groups were based on implant type, length, diameter, and angle of insertion. One experimental specimen was randomly selected from each group and was digitized in a microCT scanner. The FE models consisted of bone pieces containing Aarhus mini-implants with dimensions 1.5 × 7 mm and 1.5 × 9 mm or LOMAS mini-implants (dimensions 1.5 × 7 mm, …

Space-Time FPCA Clustering of Multidimensional Curves.

2018

In this paper we focus on finding clusters of multidimensional curves with spatio-temporal structure, applying a variant of a k-means algorithm based on the principal component rotation of data. The main advantage of this approach is to combine the clustering functional analysis of the multidimensional data, with smoothing methods based on generalized additive models, that cope with both the spatial and the temporal variability, and with functional principal components that takes into account the dependency between the curves.

Improved technique for quantitative EDXRF analysis of powdered plant samples

1998

An improved technique for energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence analysis of powdered plant samples is presented. It is based on the use of a special rotating and moveable sample holder (RMSH). This sample holder provides both controlled rotation and lateral transfer movements of the sample while a measurement is carried out, consequently simulating homogeneous excitation conditions over the sample. In this way it compensates for effects caused by the typical inhomogeneous distribution of intensity within the x-ray beam exciting the elements in the sample. The sample consists of powdered dry plant material deposited in an easy way on an adhesive tape, providing a stable layer of plant particl…

Noise-Assisted Crystallization of Opal Films

2012

International audience; An improvement of the crystal quality of opal fi lms self-assembled from polymer spheres in a moving meniscus using the agitation by white noise acoustic vibrations is demonstrated. A tenfold higher ordering of a hexagonal sphere packing in the (111) plane is achieved. This crystallization method, the mechanism of which is described in terms of the stochastic resonance, is a contrast to the widely used approach based on maintaining equilibrium conditions during the crystallization process. The precise quantifi cation of the incremental lattice order improvement as a function of acoustic noise intensity is achieved by calculating the probability of finding an opposite…

Using FOCUS to solve zeolite structures from three-dimensional electron diffraction data

2013

The programFOCUS[Grosse-Kunstleve, McCusker & Baerlocher (1997).J. Appl. Cryst.30, 985–995] was originally developed to solve zeolite structures from X-ray powder diffraction data. It uses zeolite-specific chemical information (three-dimensional 4-connected framework structure with known bond distances and angles) to supplement the diffraction data. In this way, it is possible to compensate, at least in part, for the ambiguity of the reflection intensities resulting from reflection overlap, and the program has proven to be quite successful. Recently, advances in electron microscopy have led to the development of automated diffraction tomography (ADT) and rotation electron diffraction (R…

Critical analysis of the spin-rotation constants of CF2 and CCl2: A theoretical investigation

2005

Quantum chemical ab initio calculations for the spin-rotation constants of difluorocarbene (CF2) and dichlorocarbene (CCl2) were carried out using coupled-cluster techniques with sequences of correlation-consistent basis sets. Theoretical best estimates were obtained using extrapolation to the complete basis-set limit and taking into account corrections for core correlation, additional diffuse functions and zero-point vibrational effects. It is demonstrated that such accurate theoretical estimates can be used either to support or to challenge the analysis of the experimental spectra and the reliability of the resulting data. 2005 Elsevier B.V. Optimisation of direct digital frequency synthesisers based on CORDIC

2001

Methods to simplify digital frequency synthesizers based on the co-ordinate rotation digital computer (CORDIC) algorithm are presented. Application of these methods leads to performance enhancement, compared with the topologies previously proposed in the literature. For a given output precision, hardware resources are reduced and spur-free dynamic range is increased.

Time-resolved fluorescence and fourier transform infrared spectroscopic investigations of lateral packing defects and superlattice domains in composi…

2003

Time-resolved fluorescence and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies were used to investigate the lateral organization of lipids in compositionally uniform and fully equilibrated 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-phosphatidylcholine/cholesterol (POPC/CHOL) liposomes prepared by a recently devised low-temperature trapping method. Independent fluorescence decay lifetime and rotational dynamics parameters of diphenylhexatriene (DPH) chain-labeled phosphatidylcholine (DPH-PC) in these liposomes were recovered from the time-resolved fluorescence measurements as a function of cholesterol molar fraction (X(CHOL)) at 23 degrees C. The results indicate significantly greater lifetime heterogeneity, shorter av…

Radial solutions of Dirichlet problems with concave-convex nonlinearities

2011

Abstract We prove the existence of a double infinite sequence of radial solutions for a Dirichlet concave–convex problem associated with an elliptic equation in a ball of R n . We are interested in relaxing the classical positivity condition on the weights, by allowing the weights to vanish. The idea is to develop a topological method and to use the concept of rotation number. The solutions are characterized by their nodal properties.

On the moving loads problem in discontinuous homogeneous beams and layered beams with interlayer slip

This manuscript contains the main part of my research performed in this last triennium at the Department of Civil, Environmental, Aerospace and Materials Engineering, University of Palermo, and at the Department of Basic Sciences in Engineering Sciences (Unit of Applied Mechanics), University of Innsbruck, Austria. The research adheres to a common procedure of solving a scientistic problem. That is, introduction to the problem, selection of the mathematical and physical tools to model the problem, proposed solution, and numerical validation. The thesis proposes a novel modal superposition approach to the moving loads problem on discontinuous homogeneous beam and layered beam with interlayer…
