Effects of nebivolol and atenolol on central aortic pressure in hypertensive patients: a multicenter, randomized, double-blind study.
2013
The main objective was to compare the mean change in augmentation index of hypertensive patients treated with nebivolol or atenolol.Multicenter, double-blind randomized study conducted in six Spanish centers. We enrolled outpatients between the ages of 40 and 65 years with mild or moderate essential hypertension (systolic blood pressure, SBP ≥ 140 mmHg to ≤ 179 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure, DBP ≥ 90 mmHg to ≤ 109 mmHg after a 2-week run-in placebo period). Patients received nebivolol 5 mg or atenolol 50 mg once daily. At week 3, atenolol could be titrated up to 100 mg qd for non-responders. Additionally, patients not achieving normal blood pressure after 6 weeks could be treated with 2…
Prevalence of complications after the oral rehabilitation with implant-supported hybrid prostheses
2010
Objectives: Assess the main problems referred by the patients and observed by the professionals after the bucodental rehabilitation with an implant-supported hybrid prothesis. Patient and Methods: A retrospective study was carried out in which there were 43 patients included who were visited in the Department of Oral Surgery and Orofacial Implantology of University of Barcelona Dental School for one year. An oral rehabilitation with an implant-supported hybrid prosthesis was made to those patients. The following variables were registered: age, gender, number of inserted implants, type of implant and principal problems produced by the hybrid prosthesis. Results: The rehabilitation with an im…
The effects of telmisartan alone or in combination with hydrochlorothiazide on morning home blood pressure control: The SURGE 2 practice-based study
2013
SURGE 2, a large-scale, practice-based study in 10 countries, evaluated the effects of telmisartan alone or with hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) on morning (06:00 – 11:59) home blood pressure (HBP) control. Hypertensive patients (clinic blood pressure [BP] 140/90 mmHg) received telmisartan 40 or 80 mg either alone or in combination with HCTZ 12.5 mg for 8 weeks. Treatment could be adjusted if clinic BP remained 140/90 mmHg. Clinic BP was measured in the morning prior to medication, and seated HBP monitoring was performed, three times per day, 2 days per week. A total of 25,882 patients were included (71% were previously using antihypertensives). There was a statistically signifi cant (all p 0.00…
Expression patterns and prognostic role of transketolase-like 1 in muscle-invasive bladder cancer
2015
PURPOSE: The pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) has been shown to play an important role in the metabolism of cancer cells. The transketolase-like 1 gene (TKTL1) encodes an enzyme representing an essential component of this pathway. Its expression has been demonstrated to correlate with stage and outcome in various tumors. The aim of the present study was to assess expression patterns and the prognostic role of TKTL1 in muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: The expression of TKTL1 was assessed in a tissue microarray consisting of histopathologically benign and malign tissue of 112 patients who underwent radical cystectomy due to MIBC. Cytoplasmatic and nuclear expression…
Effects of drug therapy on cardiac arrhythmias and ischemia in hypertensives with LVH.
2001
Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in hypertensive subjects is associated with an increased prevalence of ventricular arrhythmias. To evaluate the effect of antihypertensive treatment on cardiac arrhythmias (CA) and transient episodes of myocardial ischemia (TEMI), we studied 46 hypertensive patients with LVH, divided into four groups randomly treated with enalapril, hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), atenolol, or verapamil (SR-V) for 6 months. Office blood pressure and office heart rate values were recorded, in basal conditions, after 1 and 6 months of treatment, and all patients underwent echocardiography, electrocardiographic Holter monitoring, and stress testing. All drugs significantly lowere…
Electromyographic and kinematic analysis of therapeutic knee exercises under water.
2001
Abstract Objective. This study aimed to evaluate muscle function and kinematics during commonly used knee rehabilitation exercises performed in water. Design. Maximal effort single extension and flexion trials in still water and repeated extension–flexion trials in flowing water in barefoot condition were analysed from 18 healthy participants (8 men, 10 women). Background. Despite the fact that water exercises are widely used, there are only few studies involving biomechanical and hydrodynamical analysis of aquatic exercises in rehabilitation. Methods. Electromyography of the quadriceps (vastus medialis, vastus lateralis) and hamstring muscles (biceps femoris, semitendinosus) and angular ve…
Neuromuscular function during therapeutic knee exercise under water and on dry land
2001
Abstract Poyhonen T, Keskinen KL, Kyrolainen H, Hautala A, Savolainen J, Malkia E. Neuromuscular function during therapeutic knee exercise under water and on dry land. Arch Phys Med Rehabil 2001;82:1446-52. Objectives: To compare muscle activity and resistive drag force during knee extension-flexion exercises while barefoot and while wearing a Hydro Boot (increased frontal area) both under water and on dry land. Design: Participants performed the exercises while seated on an elevator chair under water. Setting: A hydrotherapy pool. Participants: Eighteen healthy persons (10 women, 8 men). Interventions: Not applicable. Main Outcome Measures: Isokinetic and isometric forces were measured wit…
Superficial thrombophlebitis in varicose vein disease: the particular role of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase.
2010
Background The purpose of this study was to compare the genetic background of superficial (SVT) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Methods Factor V (FV)-Leiden (G16891A)-, factor II(G20210A)-mutations, protein C- and S, as well as methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) polymorphisms at C677T and A1298C, and serum homocysteine levels (hcy) were determined in 29 patients with SVT and 26 with DVT. Findings FV- and –II-mutations were less frequent in patients with SVT (2/3) compared with DVT (9/5), respectively ( P < 0.002 in case of FV). However, the frequency of the MTHFR C677T polymorphism was significantly higher in patients with SVT compared with DVT (CT 12 versus 10, and TT 7 versus …
Prevention of haemophilic arthropathy during childhood. May common orthopaedic management be extrapolated from patients without inhibitors to patient…
2008
We recommend prophylaxis in haemophilic children with an inhibitor as a way of preventing the musculoskeletal impairment that is likely to affect them. This approach has been used for children without inhibitors with excellent results. If prophylaxis is not feasible, we suggest that intensive on-demand treatment should be given. Two agents, recombinant activated FVII (rFVIIa) and activated prothrombin complex concentrates (aPCC), are currently used to control haemostasis either for prophylaxis or intensive on-demand treatment. As it is recombinant, rFVIIa would seem more appropriate to be employed in children. aPCC could be used in adults, or in the event of an unsatisfactory response to rF…
